RE: PROTEST BY KOROPE DRIVERS ON LEKKI–EPE EXPRESSWAY
The attention of the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation has been drawn to reports of a protest by operators of Korope minibuses which temporarily obstructed movement along the Lekki–Epe Expressway, particularly around the Ajah axis.

For the avoidance of doubt, the Lekki–Epe corridor has formally transitioned into a Mass Transit and Regulated Transport Corridor under the Bus Reform Initiative (BRI) framework of the Lagos State Government. This transition is deliberate, data-driven, and in alignment with the State’s long-term vision for a safer, more efficient, and economically viable transport ecosystem.

The restriction of unregulated Korope operations on that expressway is not sudden, arbitrary, or targeted. Stakeholder engagement preceded enforcement. Multiple consultations were held with transport unions, corridor operators, and relevant associations. Sensitisation exercises, public advisories, and structured notifications were issued well ahead of enforcement to ensure clarity and compliance.

It is therefore unfortunate that despite being fully aware of the policy direction and the regulatory position of government, certain operators chose to disrupt public order by blocking a critical expressway that serves thousands of commuters daily. Such actions undermine public safety, economic productivity, and the collective progress of the corridor.

The Lekki–Epe Expressway is a strategic economic artery linking residential, commercial, industrial, and maritime assets including the Free Trade Zone. Allowing unregulated operations that compromise traffic flow, safety standards, and structured mass transit reforms would reverse the gains already recorded on the corridor.

We commend the Nigeria Police Force, particularly the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, for their swift intervention in restoring normalcy. Through the CP, I engaged directly with the Area Commanders covering the Lekki–Epe corridor, and assurances have been given regarding heightened enforcement, proactive patrol, and sustained vigilance to prevent any further breakdown of law and order.

The Lagos State Government remains committed to:
•Structured mass transit operations
•Orderly and regulated transport systems
•Protection of lives and property
•Zero tolerance for actions capable of disrupting public peace

Reforms under the Bus Reform Initiative are designed to improve safety, predictability, and dignity within the transport ecosystem. Lawful engagement remains welcome. However, disruption of public infrastructure will not be tolerated.

We urge all operators to align with the regulatory framework guiding the corridor and embrace structured participation within the formal transport system.

Signed
Sola Giwa
Special Adviser on Transportation to the Governor of Lagos

unionism is birthed by such discrimination. It is much later they start exploiting their one voice and togetherness for profits.

How much are they charging for the registration? Is korope bus a long term goal of Lagos Island? How can a poor conversion of a right hand drive be the long term goal of the government. It is a shame

How are they a nuisance? Do you know the level of hardship people will go through if they are banned?

Before banning korope buses on the island, they should ban yellow buses on the mainland - those ones are a major threat to life.

You would just open your mouth and type nonsense from your brain. Most likely you have not been to lagos or on lekki epe express way before, but for mumurity you must comment out of hate for Tinubu. Otherwise you should know that it is not only apc people that ply that route( common sense) then the menace of korope on that stretch is out of this world even for Nigerian standards. Presently work is being done on that corridor to accommodate the brt routes. I pass there everyday to and fro my office to my home, terrible experience with koropes daily. Banning of koropes on lekki epe expressway is welcome by commuter, transporters and residents on and of this axis outside them being a traffic nuisance, they are also security risks as koropes have been used to rob, operate and escape scenrs of robbery and murder in this axis the mass transit scheme is highly welcome.

So ruminate on matters you engage in before making a mumu of yourself.

Up lagos.

Banning korope is a good step in the right direction, they should extend it too for danfo and those white Volkswagen t4 buses too.
Report of various crimes being done in those buses like stealing of phone and properties by gangs of one chance operators.
Re: Official Rejoinder Re: Protest By Korope Drivers On Lekki–Epe Expressway by dederocs(m): 8:16am On Feb 18
Tactical squads should be sent and remove those korope from the roads, they should be arrested for public disturbance, hindrance to motorists, causing chaos and panic to citizens. Lagos State government must clear that Lekki Ajah expressway, a bunch of nuisance can not disturb us.

There are a million and one job and business to engage in. Korope always tumble, because they have no weight, and they overspeed. It's not safe for the load it carries and the speed, the drivers use one way, most korope are used for one chance.

We will not and can not, because of a few people, not go ahead with the Lagos State transportation master plan of safe, quality transportation for millions of lagosians.

This is good for a mega city, good for urbanisation, good for tourism and good for security...you know how many people have been victims of one chance in Lagos and some killed?

They can take the korope to their villages and work there.

Think before speaking.

Stop writing a useless epistle. Give those jobs you want to give to korope drivers to those owoda thugs all over that corridor constituting nuisance. They are even a bigger threat to society.

Who do you engage

Most time you engage people to look for the drivers but they bring some tout to represent the driver who Inturn only server there own interest
Give them money they share among them self without getting to the drivers
