Forgive Tinubu - For He Knows What He Is Doing by kayjordan(op): 3:09pm On Feb 19
[10 Minutes read]-

President Tinubu once said - "If I don't improve Electricity, don't vote for me".

The word of President Tinubu are positive but when marked by existing corruption, bad political structure and an existing survival culture - the leader who means well will turn out to be a liar.

Insecurity, poor electricity, Inflation and the wobbling economy are the problems President Tinubu is currently addressing - but the lightening-speed the citizens expect is the main issue.

Regardless of what people think of President Tinubu, the President is fixing the current problems:

*INFLATION: The President has implemented policies through the Central Bank of Nigeria to reduce prices of goods and services and has regulated the Naira and Dollar.

*REVENUE GENERATION: The President has implemented a policy that will increase revenue generation through taxes for development. He's also inviting foreign investors to grow the economy.

*PETROL SUBSIDY: The President implemented the removal of subsidy to reduce debt and has also regulated the petrol price to a reasonable extent.

The above achievements of President Tinubu may look theoretical than realistic because citizens quantify achievements:

To understand the logic of governance - I would illustrate it with a Sky-Scraper construction:

1. You need a plan.

2. You need a team of engineers.

3. You need a 5-10 year timeline.

4. You need adequate funding.

If a Sky Scraper project is possible for completion in a year, then a President can also fix Nigeria's problems in one year - but that's not feasible - Nigeria is a gigantic engine yet to be completed.

President Tinubu overseas more than 10 Ministries and Departments with millions of civil servants working in them like Engineers just to grind and make Nigeria's engine work.

The completion of the Nigerian engine is approximately a 100-year project which require a chain of progressive leadership over that period.

America was not built by a single American President but by the efforts of many Presidents overtime. The same applies to Nigeria - Babangida built, Abacha built, Obasanjo built, Jonathan built, Buhari built and Tinubu is continuing to build.

We must appreciate the mutiple and complex engine parts and wires that make up the gigantic engine called Nigeria.

Each engine piece is finely assembled by a team of engineers (civil servants) and supervised by Supervisors (ministers) to ensure a smooth construction of the engine.

This is the complex engine, President Tinubu is building by ruling over:

* 36 states.
*200million people.
*800,000 LGAs nationwide.

The gigantic engine construction doesn't go without difficulties such as:

*Poor revenue generation.
*Corrupt civil service.

These factors contribute to the duration of the Nigerian engine's construction  - one Leader nor one administration can do this alone.

If the owners of the project (Nigerian citizens) don't fund the project adequately through taxes, the project will be stalled. If the engineers building the Nigerian engine (civil servants) sabotage the Nigerian engine, the project will be stalled as well.

Given the current structure of the government, the President is only working with taxes from less than 30% of the population (Approx.) - so the govenment creates multiple taxes through different mediums to capture those who don't pay taxes. If taxes remain insufficient for development (construction), the govenment have no choice than to solicit World bank/IMF loans to fill the gap.

When the government tries to fill the 70% tax gap by enforcing tax payments, defaulting citizens and the corrupt civil service disrupt the recovery of these taxes. That is why President Tinubu initiated a tax reform that will be harmonious and quite efficient.

These are the big issues President Tinubu deals with in his administration - even if you recommend prosecution of offenders to the President, it's still the offenders (civil service) that will let the offenders (Citizens) get away. After 4 years, there's no guarantee that this gigantic engine will be completed and it would have to be passed onto the next administration.

Nigeria is not necessarily a Tinubu project - but rather an existing Nigerian project that requires long-term construction. So if Tinubu doesn't solve Nigeria's problem in 8-years, he's not mandated to - rather he's meant to be part of the legacy group of Leaders that built the country over many years.

Tinubu in the reign, continues to build the Nigerian engine with new and existing policies amidst wide-spread corruption, current political structure and an "incomplete project status" Nigeria currently bears.

A former minister once said  - "Nigerians don't appreciate their Leaders until they leave office".

So forgive Tinubu if he made you an absolute promise. What he truly means for Nigeria is - "slow and steady growth".

"Just like a plant that grows from a seedling to a big plant without you ever knowing - no matter how long you stay there watching it - you can never see it grow unless you leave it for a month and come back to see how big it has become."

While he needs not sign everything. There's just to much to sign and peruse.

That's the trick always used to get him to sign when a singular document is put intentionally on top of a pile for him to sign.
