Sacking them is not enough. They should be prosecuted and jailed.
Exactly. But as most of your responders have shown, Nigerians seem to think that it is okay to excuse thievery.

When it is small thieves, Nigerians look at it from the marxian angle of suffering proletariat vs bourgeouis element. And they side with the protelariat. Therefore stealing is 'allowed' .They will even excuse it on the fact that 'they are poor and suffering'

When it is the big politican...lol. Nigerians have a new defence. Na our tribesman, why are you attacking our tribe or religion? Are they the only persons?

Whoever is stealing, Nigerians have a ready excuse for that person.

Including you, then. The only debate is which of the three categories you fit in.
SmartPolician:
I've classified 99% of Nigerians into three categories - hypocritical, criminal or opportunistic.

Even those who you think haven't stolen before seem so because they haven't been tested yet!

You'd be jailed and more if you steal a dollar in the US. This mentality is non-existent in a society where rule of law is established.

This is an integrity issue! This implies that if an opportunity however to rob the bank presents itself, they will steal all your money there without thinking twice !! Dingbats !!! ..🤔

Though no justification and reasons should warrant such bad character and personality but sanity and humanity are taken over by hunger in the Nigerian kind of situation

In law there is a maxim that the punishment should fit the crime.

You can't just throw people in prison over petty financial malfeasance

That's why you should contact your senator to pass the appropriate laws about that ...eg community service for petty theft.

I'm not the one who should contact the senator to pass a new law on this matter, you are the one who needs to do it because you're the one who still thinks they need an additional punishment after getting the sack for stealing 20K.

A thief is a thief! The punishment is okay to avoid such more.

Exclusively, there is need for agitation for meaningful payment and strengthening of the economy. No matter what one earns, if the govt overlooks the centredness of the price market in the hand of the business men, no amount received can be appreciated in this country.

Unfortunately, they get their share from the agencies involved in price and standard and keep us at risk

I'm satisfied with the laws as is. It's just that those who should enforce them don't

Two security personnel attached to a commercial bank have reportedly been dismissed after allegedly sharing ₦20,000 that was mistakenly dispensed by an Automated Teller Machine (ATM).

The incident, which gained attention on X (formerly Twitter), has triggered widespread reactions online, with many Nigerians debating workplace integrity, accountability, and the consequences of poor judgment. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

According to details shared by a user on the social media platform, a bank customer had visited the ATM gallery during the weekend to withdraw cash.

After initiating a transaction, the machine reportedly delayed releasing the money. Assuming the withdrawal had failed, the customer removed his debit card and left the premises.

However, shortly after the customer departed, the ATM dispensed the requested ₦20,000.

It was alleged that two security guards on duty at the location noticed the unattended cash, took possession of it, and later shared the money between themselves instead of reporting the incident to bank officials.

Sources claimed that the issue came to light after the affected customer later discovered that his bank account had been debited despite not receiving the cash.

Following a review of the ATM footage, the guards were reportedly identified and subsequently relieved of their duties by the bank management.

While the bank involved has not officially commented on the development, the story has continued to generate mixed reactions, with some Nigerians condemning the guards’ actions while others questioned whether dismissal was too severe considering the amount involved.

The development has sparked conversations about ethics in the workplace, particularly for employees in sensitive positions that require a high level of trust.

Some commentators argued that honesty should not be determined by the amount involved, while others expressed sympathy, citing economic hardship and low wages often associated with private security jobs.

First and major blames go to the bank for installing faulty cash machine which takes extra time to dispense money.

don't mind him, it's an irony that in Nigeria, the masses hate themselves with perfect hatred, while the same masses love, adore and worship their looting political elites as demi-gods.
though what the security men did was totally wrong, because it's a betrayal of trust, therefore sacking them is enough punishment that will teach them some lesson.

Berankis:
Is it security guards alone? All their executives and bosses are also thieves. My GTbank account is still in negative of close to 300k today because GTbank was debiting my account even while money wasn't there and they were just waiting for the right time. After I paid in a 100k, it was taken and I logged in to see -296k still pending.
I called their customer care, they gave silly excuses of transactions I never initiated, no records of it in the transaction history, no email notification, no SMS notifications, no PIN request or any notice and these multiple transactions 3-4 went on without my knowledge. I went to the branch close to my house up to 5times without clear explanation, I escalated it verbally to the senior staff behind cashier but surprisingly he refused to check my account for clarifications! They all knew what was going on and they did this to many of their customers. The lady customer care from head office stopped picking my calls.
I wish GTbank luck going forward and I forgo my 100k they stole but the -296k will be there forever! I have never borrowed money from them in my life.
I escalated it to CBN via complaint email but still no resolution. I got tired and left it. This was my first GTbank and Bank Account opened around 2002/2003 in my undergraduate days and dey made me to forgo that account just like that...
The aspect of you leaving your money is distasteful o
