Dear @airsaylongcome,
Thank you for all you do here. I was going through the 2013 thread and I couldn't help but notice this comment you made after your AC then. Is there any chance you still have the stuff that was emailed to you? Would really appreciate your kind response.

I was told that during the last assessment center, candidates were given a puzzle to solve… Map of Africa puzzle to be precise. Please who can confirm the truthfulness of this?

You always mentioned how you flopped your presentation et al. Please if you don’t mind can you give us a brief story of that session? Like how many questions were u able to answer . And what do you think might have made you stand out to the extent you were selected. And how did u feel after getting the email?🤣💔

And can you advice on what strategic question(s) one can ask during the fact finding exercise?

It’s been a few years now. So I may not remember things in detail. But I think I’ve talked about it before.

So we were taken into a room, handed the brief and told we had I think 40 minutes to prepare. I looked around and saw just paper, paper everywhere. No computer. And I had never done a presentation without PowerPoint. My brain must have shutdown I think because for 20 maybe 30 mins I was just reading the case study and e no dey enter. The guy in the same room (brilliant guy) was just writing and flipping to new pages on his flipchart and me I’ve not even picked pen. I was like naaaaah, no need na. If this guy has been reading and “answer sheet” don full like this and he’s not done, that means no hope for me. But I said to myself, if I’m going to fail, I cannot fail with a blank answer sheet. I rather write nonsense instead. I open the first page of the flip chat and divided it in two: top-half and bottom-half. It’s not like I hadn’t read the brief, I just didn’t know exactly what to do. Anyway sha I started writing: top half I put four bullet points down as identified problems. Bottom half 4 maybe 5 proposed solutions.

Time up and we went in to the examiners. Two men in my instance. One of them was northern and as he welcomed me I knew I was in trouble. I was struggling with his accent. Not like he had a bad accent but just some words and how he pronounced them and I just said in my mind “today na today”. They asked me to present and I presented o. Talked through the problem and my proposed solution. I’ve been in some senior management meetings prior to that (with my boss at the time), and I had learned the art of talking without saying anything. So I was literally trying to wing that one. Like ai went out on a wing (a broken wing) and a prayer. That’s how the northern guy poked a hole in one of my solutions and traced it back to an error in the problem I identified (data error really, I had mentioned numbers that referenced something else in the brief). He drilled down a bit and between struggling to hear him and realising that “na fail I dey fail laidis so o”, I still compose myself and was taking their questions on. But I was broken. Like mentally, I was finished. I think it was the task before lunch. That was probably the most tasteless lunch I had eaten. I forced myself to get over it during the lunch break. I remember looking into other candidates eyes and they were pensive at best, stressed most often. I’m sure those that looked in mine would have seen the same. Meanwhile all the NLNG staff will be talking soft during lunch saying it’s not really a do or die something.

Getting the success mail? Naaaah that’s indelible. I was driving my jalopy when the mail dropped. I jejely match brake “cut hand” go corner. My hands and legs were shaking cos I had seen the notification that it was from “Bonny”. The eruption of joy cannot be described.

PS: I don’t know if I can properly advise on what to ask for that fact finding. For me, I had decided I was going to go with the choice that keeps me within time and budget for the project.

@airsay. Thanks a lotttttt!!!! This really meant a lot and trust me when I say your story is always inspiring. Well the wait has begun for us… really hoping for the best ngl cos tbh I really can’t access my performance after that test( well I barely have any proper rating for myself after exams even during school days but I know my God doesn’t fail me when He’s about to make sth extra-ordinary happen in my life).

I hope that ur guy that was in the presentation room with you resumed with you at Bonny?🤣💔

Assessment Center Case Studies

Assessment Center Case Studies are popular tools used in assessment centres for evaluating and assessing applicants by presenting applicants with complex and past unknown scenarios. After analyzing the information and identifying the most relevant parts, applicants answer questions that offer the employer with insights regarding important aspects of the knowledge, cognitive abilities, and personal attributes of the applicant.

Like other assessment tests, preparing for the Assessment Center Case Studies can make a big difference to an applicant's score. This write up will review useful information that can help an applicant arrive at his or her Assessment Center Case Studies better prepared and increase his or her chances of success in an assessment center.

What is Assessment Center Case Studies

Assessment Center Case Studies are tests in which applicants are presented with a scenario related to the position, role, or the wider operations of the company, followed by various questions that are designed to evaluate, assess or measure specific abilities. Through the applicant's answers, employers gain insight into their ability to handle tasks similar to those they might be responsible for in the future, thus indicating their problem solving abilities, eligibility, suitability and compatibility with the job description.

Assessment Center Case Studies usually introduces a series of documents such as reports and data from recent market research, which may relate to hypothetical or real-life scenarios. Applicants are asked to analyze the case at hand, make business decisions, and give a brief verbal or written report of their recommendations. Applicants may be asked to complete the case study as an individual exercise or as part of a group, which allows assessors to evaluate or assess the teamwork of the applicant.

Two Types of Assessment Center Case Studies

The following are two main types of Assessment Center Case Studies:

1. Subject-related Assessment Center Case Studies:

In Subject-related Assessment Center Case Studies the specific and professional knowledge of the subject is required. In cases of applicants applying for a position or role in which industry knowledge is important, the content of the case study will be directly relevant to that position or role. In these cases, applicants are required to use their existing knowledge and experience to identify vital information from the brief.

For example, project managers may be asked to plan for the launch of a new product, which incorporates scheduling, budgeting and resourcing.

2. General Case Assessment Center Case Studies:

General Case Assessment Center Case Studies are designed for a broad audience of applicants who are tested for several roles or positions. Answering the case study questions does not need any specific past knowledge, and most questions can be answered with common sense. Any information that is needed for answering the case study questions is provided by the assessor, whether verbally or through additional documentation.
General Case Assessment Center Case Studies are much more popular as they can be completed by a large volume of applicants applying for a wide range of positions or roles.

What the Assessment Center Case Studies Measures

The merit of Assessment Center Case Studies is that it evaluates, assesses or measures a number of elements at the same time, giving the employer a clear view which combines soft skills with cognitive abilities and even personality skills. Through candidates' answers, the employer can learn about the applicant's:

1. Judgement and understanding of the situation at hand

2. Thoroughness of analysis

3. Logical presentation of ideas

4. Practicality of the proposed solutions

5. Creativity and innovation in solving problems

6. Presentation abilities and communication skills

7. Ability to answer off the cuff comments

8. Commercial awareness

9. Organizational skills

10. Decisiveness

Companies That Use Assessment Centre Case Studies

The first type of assessment centre case studies are those for multiple positions in finance, banking, audit, marketing, Information Technology, and others. These Assessment Centre Case Studies are based on a huge file of documents such as company reports candidates must quickly go through and analyze. They may be completed as part of an assessment day or given at the office of the employer as part of the interview.
Another type of Assessment Centre Case Studies candidates can find in assessment centres is for consultancy and business management organizations. The scenario is usually described by the interviewer or is limited to a few pages. The task typically revolves around mathematical problems, estimation questions and strategic thinking. The applicant is expected to ask the assessor for more information in order to understand the problems at hand.

Top Companies/Organizations That Use Assessment Centre Case Studies

The following are leading companies that use Assessment Centre Case Studies:

1. Unilever

2. Amazon

3. Tesco

4. HSBC

5. Oando

6. NLNG

7. TotalEnergies

8. ExxonMobil

9. Deloitte

10. EY (Ernst And Young)

Assessment Center Case Study Examples

Assessment Center Case studies can be about virtually anything, although there are some topics that appear more frequently than others.
The following are Assessment Center Case Study examples an applicant may face in an Assessment Center:

1. Strategic decisions in international or local business contexts.

2. Expansion of departments, acquisition of new companies or products.

3. Entrance into new fields of development and product lines.

4. Exploring new markets.

5. Reconstructing organizational trees.

3. What are the approximate annual developmental costs of company B?

Tips for Increasing Your Chances of Success In Assessment Center Case Studies
The following are tips for approaching your Assessment Center Case Studies:

1. Practice your presentation skills with friends or family to reduce the pressure at the actual assessment centre. Candidates can practice using assessment center book at https://selar.com/nlngassessmentcenter this assessment center book contains practice questions and answers for Assessment Center Case Studies.

2. Applicants should Immerse themselves in the Assessment Center case studies, that is they should try to imagine themselves in the scenario, and put themselves in the position of the decision maker.

3. Time management: Candidates will have a lot of data and documents to make sense of within a short timeframe, an applicant's time management skills are being put to the test. The key to success is learning how to identify relevant points and prioritize relevant information while ignoring the irrelevant, giving an applicant the ability to work effectively and efficiently on the actual assessment day.

4. There is more than one ‘right’ answer - assessment center case studies normally have more than one correct answer, and as long as an applicant can logically justify his or her recommendations and the applicant stands up to questioning by the assessor, the applicant's analysis can be regarded positively.

5. Applicants should focus on clients because all companies want their clients to be happy. If there is a client in the Assessment Center case studies, the applicant should emphasize more on the client and their needs.

6. Applicants should be confident when presenting, and not arrogant, candidates should command authority, without appearing overconfident or arrogant.

Bonny and PH. If oil dey your head Abuja (very slim). NLNG left Lagos long ago and the Abuja operations is for very specific staff. Can’t remember the criteria for that. But honestly, delete Abuja from your mind.

All GTs resume in Bonny for training though. Carry blanket or learn to turn the AC off

Any Idea when we'll get the next email?
From past NLNG recruitment cycles:
Two to six weeks is the common timeframe.
In some situations, it may take up to eight weeks depending on:
1. Number of applicants
2. Position applied for
3. Internal review process
4. Batch scheduling of assessment centers

Since you are actively preparing for assessments, this waiting period is the best time to:

1. Practice group exercise simulations

2. Prepare for case study analysis

3. Review behavioral and competency-based interview questions

4. Refresh technical knowledge relevant to your position

I admire the optimism of those already preparing for the assessment centre and wish you all great success.

I have been engulfed in work these past few days and can say that I feel better and have mostly moved on.

NLNG offers a stable life, an escape from prevalent African poverty at a young age, and an easy path to a comfortable future. I wish I had adopted a better strategy going into the exams, but time does not go backwards.

I wish the NLNG path were viable for me, but since I do not see myself making it to the next stage, I encourage others not to become depressed when the results and success emails are sent.

There is no single path to a good life. Airsaylongcome is the perfect mentor for this entire process because, with him, you understand the perks and enormous benefits of passing through the rigours of recruitment and finally becoming a member of staff at NLNG, but you also understand that one can still build a great career elsewhere, and life does not end with an oil and gas job.

While we wait for the next stage, BRACE FOR IMPACT.

Mix bag. The engineering grads got sent to the UK for engineering training pretty early. We (business GTs) didn’t meet them in Bonny when we resumed a few weeks after they had resumed and “jakpa’d”.

Also the 2017 GTs were a bit older than your average GTs as the process had taken 4 years when we resumed. So most had gotten married by the time they resumed. But yeah for a young lady, NLNG money can be very long that your average young guy no go get liver to toast. Plus the general culture in NLNG can make you come across as proud. I’m not saying NLNG folks are proud, but being an NLNGer means you start thinking and acting differently (more circumspect and safety conscious) and many people may see it as proud. Safety mindset is very very high there so basic safety things you start doing can put off some people. I remember always disconnecting phone charger from the wall whenever it wasn’t charging a phone and I got told “Which kain forming you dey form?”

Overall though, any fresh GT should have a financial plan laid out from day 1. Don’t let higher pay lead to higher expenses. And YES, you work hard. Very hard
