More than 7,000 languages are spoken around the world today and at least 3,000 of them, or 40 percent, are endangered.

English is the most widely spoken language, with approximately 1.5 billion speakers in 186 countries. Two out of every 10 English speakers are native, while the remaining 80 percent speak English as their second, third or higher language, according to Ethnologue, a database which catalogues the world’s languages.

Mandarin Chinese is the second most spoken language with almost 1.2 billion speakers. However, when accounting for native speakers, it is the largest language in the world, owing to China’s large population.

Hindi comes in third at 609 million speakers, followed by Spanish (559 million), and Standard Arabic (335 million).

The data split Chinese into factions, but left English as a single language. Can a typical Nigerian/African that speaks English converse with a British, American, or Australian?

Try watching some British films and let's see if you won't seek the subtitle.

Very soon Yoruba language will not be on the list because it is already an endanger language in Yoruba land. Many Yoruba homes don't longer speak Yoruba again. Every Yoruba child between 1-10 years old can't even speak common Yoruba language. You see their parent speaking English language to them.

Many Christians banned Yoruba language, and recently many Muslim home too, Arabic is their official language at home too.

Yoruba is in competition with no one. We don't cry marginalization when things don't go our way.

To us, we go to the root of problems and conduct an holistic approach to bettering it not laying accusing fingers.

Everything is not war.

Some people will still look for a way to say this census is rigged to muscle them out.

Trash. Which church banned Yoruba language? Which Yoruba family speak Arabic? Trash . I have never seen any Muslim using Arabic to communicate in his or her home. Arabic is used only in religious affairs not a medium of communication.

The answer to the emboldened is YES. The problems we often have are their accent and speed. We don't speak as fast as they do because we depend on the rate at which we speak our local languages to speak English. But can we converse with them? Yes, we can.

When I listen to some white men speak so fast, I know they know nothing about communication. You can never see people who understand communication, especially world leaders, rush words because the slower you speak, the better you pass your message.

Muslims dont speak Arabic at home. how many Yoruba muslims understand Arabic? Both christians and muslims particularly the elite speak english at home, Yoruba language is left for kids of the poor and mostly uneducated or not well educated.

Igbos don't like speaking their language to themselves at all. They'll rather hide and speak it.

I was at the market months ago and the seller spoke Igbo to the young girl purchasing an item. The girl immediately started forming posh and asked the seller to speak in good English instead. Lol. Ujunwa feeling funky

This is not true. If there's only one tribe that likes to identify with their language and culture in Nigeria, It is the Yoruba.

Yorubas like to bear their native names more than any other tribe in Nigeria.
