What qualifies as consensus is strictly defined by law under the 2026 electoral act. For a candidate to emerge by consensus, it means either he is the only candidate or other candidates must sign a letter withdrawing and endorsing the consensus candidate.

Once 1 candidate refuses to withdraw, you cannot have a consensus candidate and it automatically goes to direct primaries.

BTW this also whittles down the power of governors in determining who becomes senator etc. if you are truly popular amongst the party faithful in your district, no governor can stop you getting the ticket. I think this is progress. I know a governor in the SW who likely won’t be going to the senate.
Wow. I bet the governors will do everything in their power to pressure the NASS, or lobby Tinubu to send an amendment bill to NASS for them to add an indirect primary provision in the Act.

I really don’t see how the governors would fold their arms and watch one of their most powerful leverages be taken away just like that.

Not going to happen.

The era of governors going to senate to retire and continuous turnover of new faces particularly in the senate is over. The senate in particular is supposed to be a place of experienced, learned and wise people with institutional memory not a continuous conveyor belt of new faces.

As they say, if e reach your turn as a senator or rep and you get the chance to pass a law that removes the stranglehold of governors over you and a president that will sign the law, if you like don’t pass the law.

Hopefully this paves the way for better quality of individuals in the senate and house because they no longer need to rely on endorsement and hand picking by governors. If your people like you, you will win the ticket. If you do well, you will if someone more popular than you emerges, he will win. So it puts pressure on you to perform.

It is a simple statistics bro. even a neophyte political analyst with know that the coming of duo of Atiku would have seen them win the APC then. That's why immediately Obi left, Tinubu so confident that he believes they are already won.

Yes, the dynamic had greatly changed now and I don't see even their chance of win with there combo as bright like 2023, but definitely both will give APC run for their money.
Simple statistics indeed. So people will rig for Atiku in the SE the way they rigged for Obi because Atiku is their father? Igbos will kill two Yoruba in Lagos to make Atiku win? Yoruba Christians will campaign for Atiku? Keep deceiving yourself!

Politics is the more you look, the less you see.

They may not want to show their hand too soon....because others will have enough time to react and sabotage
