I've Been Having Insomnia For Over A Year by Babysho(op): 6:26pm On Feb 22
I've been having sleepless nights for over a year now. Back and forth with doctors and sleeping meds.

I'd sleep around 10 or 11pm and be up 2am or 3am, wide awake like I wasn't just sleeping, unable to sleep back. I noticed recently that my heart rate would be high when I wake.

I'm this close to quitting my job because of insomia.

I've tried hundreds of remedies, chamomile tea, all sorts of sleep inducing fruits, sleeping medications, yoga, warm bath, nothing works.

Help.

Hi sho.

I can relate with your issue cos i had it too some years back.

What exactly caused or started it?

Though there are some remedies u can try like this chinese tea i bought some months ago or u can buy horlicks tea; prepare warm with small milk and take around 8pm ... drink enough water; ease yourself and hit the bed ... I can guarantee u, you'll sleep for over 6 hours and wake up feeling relaxed.

So, if u wish to, u can discuss how it started ... Awaiting your response

Babysho, the elevated heart rate when you wake at 2-3am is worth paying attention to. That timing is significant — cortisol (your body's stress hormone) naturally peaks around 3-4am, and if your stress levels are already high, it can cause premature waking and make it impossible to go back to sleep.

A few things that may actually help that you might not have tried yet:

1. Magnesium glycinate — not regular magnesium oxide, specifically the glycinate form. 300mg about an hour before bed. It's one of the most underrated sleep supplements and is very safe. Many people notice a difference within a week.

2. Fixed wake time — no exceptions — Pick a time (say 6am) and wake at that exact time every day, even weekends, even if you slept badly. This is the most powerful thing you can do to reset your circadian rhythm. It builds sleep pressure that forces your brain to sleep properly.

3. Check your caffeine timing — Caffeine has a 6-hour half-life. A coffee or malt at 2pm still has about 50% of its caffeine in your system at 8pm. Even if you don't feel wired, it disrupts deep sleep stages.

4. Stop eating 3 hours before bed — Late meals spike insulin and keep your body in an active metabolic state when it should be winding down.

5. Get tested for sleep apnea — Waking suddenly with high heart rate at 2-3am and being unable to return to sleep is a classic presentation of sleep apnea or upper airway resistance syndrome. Has a doctor specifically suggested a sleep study? If not, push for one.

The sleep medications alone won't fix it if the root cause is cortisol dysregulation, nutrient deficiency, or a breathing issue during sleep. Hope you find relief soon.

I also have the same problem and currently I'm starting to hear insistant ringing in my ear I think it might be an early warning sign for HBP, it also does help that any time I wake up my heart rate spikes like I just concluded a marathon. Please doctors in the platform help!!!

Sorry for the late response, really tied up with work and fatigue. Thank you for your response.

I can’t remember exactly what started it but most of my early 20s was battling ulcer and anxiety disorders. Now that I can say I’ve finally beat the ulcer and most of the anxiety, sleeping disorder comes in.

Is the tea better than chamomile tea cause I’m already taking that and it doesn’t work.

Are you advising stand alone drinking water before bed or it has to be with the tea?

Thank you so much. I have heard about magnesium glycinate recently but I was skeptical because it’s pricey and I have been buying and buying all sorts of things that don’t work. I could also see cortisol dysregulation being at play because I get stressed very quickly.

I think I have the rest in check.

I’m right there with you. 👋👋 I thought it was just because I do less work in the day, now I barely sleep at night and usually find myself wide awake by 3:00 AM. The crazy part is I’m still active all day long. I'd really love to figure out what the solution is.

Get a partner so you guys feed off each other's energy. And listen to a lot of acoustic guitar songs.

While working or relaxing, I have acoustic guitar songs playing.

Also, if you must use social media before sleeping, avoid skits. YouTube documentaries are calming and give you a lot of material to sleep through.

Causes
From my understanding Insomnia is caused by Anxiety or Hyper-Brain activities. Your brain can't relax, which you need to learn how to relax your hyperactivness.
Recommended Remedy
1. Stop all the drugs/Solutions you are using because they will stop working after sometimes
2. Pay attention to the cause of the hyperactiveness
3. Then...

Let me tell you the truth, no amount of drugs or treatment can solve this matter. It is only God that can solve it. This is a spiritual matter.

Surrender your life to God. Tell him to take over this matter. Be prayerful because only prayer can resolve this issue.

When you do it. In no time, your sleep will come back to normal and you will sleep until you are tired of sleeping.

I am talking out of experience

Re: I've Been Having Insomnia For Over A Year by epainos:
Insomnia isn't good. Any who had had it or who is presently passing through it can relate to this. It is not OK at all.

Just don't pick up sleeping pills if you don't want to damage yourself. The mistake many people make is using sleeping pills. Don't ever do it cos if you are addicted to it, that is wahala.

Insomnia aways points to something else. That thing is what you need to fix. There are so many issues that can cause it. Digestive issue (IBS, IBD,, SIBO, SIFO, etc), heart issues, hormonal imbalances, etc. Many things can cause. The specialist doctor that will eventually help you may be a cardiologist, gastroenterologist, endocrinologist. gynecologist for females, etc.

If I were you, my next action is to ask the doctors treating me to refer to a teaching hospital. That is if the doctors you are seeing now are just physicians. Get a reference for a detailed check up in a teaching hospital so you can know exactly what is wrong. They know what to do when you get there, but, the only issue is that they aren't that fast. They can frustrate you. So, if your doctor is very close to you, he may find an expert you can consult privately so you don't waste your time there if you have the cash.

So, find a very good primary care physician who can help you by treating you (if not severe), or refer you to the right person above.

You may need to spend money on tests. Na there wahala dey for many. Dem no go wan spend. And they come on Nairaland for remote treatment from nob doctors.

My brother, you are not alone. Mine used to be that chronic. But to the glory of God, I have been able to overcome that.

Forget about tea, medicine, drugs and the likes. Relax your mind and forget the challenges of this passing world. If you are a catholic, when it is bed time, get your rosary and recite, without having a particular decade on your mind. Just continue until sleep takes over.

If you are not a catholic, you can use ejaculatory prayers every night. Something like;
'Jesus I Love',
'Jesus I trust in you',
'thank you Jesus', '
have mercy on me, O Lord'
Recite any of the above or something similar for an indefinite times, until sleep takes over.

If you are a Muslim, use any short dua as ejaculation or recite your rosary continuously until sleep takes over.

Also deep meditation can help. What you need is to get rid of all the thoughts that are affecting you and keep you restless.

God did it for me, He will do it for you. Amen

Rewire your system by yourself. Stop drinking anything.

Take 2 days off from work. Require your body to only sleep at night. You’ll have a reset.

Sometimes we spend all our time and health on work and use all that money to treat ourselves when we get sick at a later time or older age.
