The suit, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/345/2026 and filed before the Federal High Court in Abuja, seeks to nullify a search warrant issued by a magistrate court in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on February 4.

Why is the ICPC still keeping Elrufai without charge for so long now? We thought they had all their facts? Do you investigate before detention or you simply arrest then begin to investigate. Both the EFCC and the ICPC have failed to pin anything against him. The guy is squeaky clean. We hope Tinubu can say the same because this will definitely go around.

The Federal High Court, Abuja, has awarded a N1 million fine against the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission for the unlawful detention of former Registrar, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, Dibu Ojerinde.

In the ruling, Justice Obiora Egwuatu also awarded the sum of N200,000 as a fine against the ICPC as Ojerinde’s cost of instituting the suit.

Justice Egwuatu held that it was undisputed that there was a pending charge against the ex-JAMB boss bordering on conspiracy to sell, sale of forfeited property, and multiple identity cards with different names against Ojerinde.

He, however, held that Ojerinde is presumed innocent until he has been proven guilty.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has withdrawn the alleged money laundering suit it filed at the Federal High Court against Lagos Speaker Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa.

Naija News understands that the anti-graft did not give any particular reason for its application for withdrawal.

Following the application to withdraw, Justice Nicholas Oweibo discharged the ‘lien/Post No Debit’ placed on Obasa’s three accounts in Standard Chartered Bank.

The accounts are (US Dollars) 0001852063; (Current) 0001852056 and (Saving) 5002309624.

The judge also set aside the ex-parte orders he made on September 15, 2020, which led to the freezing of the accounts.

Recall that the court on September 15, 2020, granted an interim order freezing Obasa’s accounts following the EFCC’s application in a suit marked FHC/LCS/1064/2020.

The agency had said it was investigating the Speaker for the alleged offences of conspiracy, diversion of funds, abuse of office and money laundering.

But Justice Oweibo, on August 16, 2023, heard the application to unfreeze the accounts in his chamber.

During the hearing, the EFCC was represented by Mr. Sulaiman I. Sulaiman, while Obasa was represented by Mr. Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika (SAN).

The EFCC lawyer told the court that the application to unfreeze the accounts was pursuant to Section 44(2)(K) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and Sections 26, 29 and 34 (1) of the EFCC (Establishment) Act, 2004, and under the court’s inherent jurisdiction.

Section 44 of the Constitution concerns constitutional rights to property.

Justice Oweibo held: “It is hereby ordered that an order is hereby granted to the respondent/applicant setting aside the ex-parte orders of this court made on the 15th day of September 2020 upon the ex-parte motion of the Applicant/ Respondent in relation the funds of the Respondent/Applicant domiciled in the accounts stated in the following schedule:

“ACCOUNT NAME, FINANCIAL ACCOUNT INSTITUTIONS, TYPE OF ACCOUNT, 1. Mudasiru Ajayi Obasa, Standard Chartered, (US Dollars) 0001852063 2. Mudasiru Ajayi Obasa, Standard Chartered (Current) 0001852056 3. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, Standard Chartered (Saving) 5002309624.

“Issued at Lagos, under the seal of this Honourable Court and by the hands of the Presiding Judge this 16th day of August 2023.”

Since the Nigerian government confirmed that the abducted 38 worshippers in Kwara State and the 24 Kebbi schoolgirls had been freed, many Nigerians have been awaiting updates about the arrest or killing of their abductors.

The silence of the federal and state governments on consequences for the perpetrators has led many to believe that the government likely negotiated with the terrorists and paid ransom to have the abductees released.

FIJ called the spokespersons of the Nigerian Army (NA) and the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) on Wednesday morning, but neither provided answers to questions about the abductors.

Shortly after Kebbi Governor Nasir Idris and Bello Matawalle, Minister of Defence, announced on Tuesday that the 24 students had been freed, the terrorists who abducted the girls released a video, saying the government negotiated with them for the girls’ release.

A national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Lagos State Governor, Senator Bola Tinubu has renewed his verbal attacks at President Goodluck Jonathan, describing his administration as a failure.

According to the APC chieftain, the President’s incessant excuses to Nigerians is testament to his inability to continue to preside over the affairs of the nation and urged him to resign.

Tinubu made the remarks on Friday, in Benin City, while commissioning the new six lane New Lagos Road and the Ewohimi Hospital in Esan South East of Edo State.

He said: “A nation fails because of the leadership failures, if there is a good leader at the top, a nation will not fail. Because the fish start getting rotten from the head. The poverty, insecurity, unemployment which we are witnessing today in this country is because the head has failed.

“Let them stop giving us excuses that Boko Haram is in my government, fish them out. That we have saboteurs in the military, you are admitting failure. No excuse of failure, Mr President we chose you to lead this country, resign if you cannot enough of the excuses”.

Tinubu, who described Governor Adams Oshiomhole as a man of honour and one capable of leading Nigeria, pointed out that the governor’s developmental strides in Edo state is an indication that the APC has a reservoir of credible people capable of becoming president.

“Many people like you would have fell into the temptation of naira and kobo. But you stood for the progress of Edo state. We share in common the determination to make progress, you had the opportunity to be in labour party, you had that option clearly, but you chose to be with the progressives that you know”, Tinubu added.
