Federalofficia:We keep telling people that the value of a currency to the dollar doesn't determine the performance of the economy. There are fundamental things to consider. When you want to discourage imports it will pay you to have low value to the dollar so that imports will be expensive. An export oriented country will benefit more if their currency is low in value. Most Asian currencies have low value to the dollar. The Nigerian situation is because the only major export which is crude oil is priced in dollar and the price is determined internationally. In the days of so much petrodollar the government arbitrarily fixed the value high. This encouraged all manner of imports. Industries died because it was cheaper to import finished goods than to produce locally. As the petrodollar started reducing we couldn't defend the high rate. First we started borrowing to defend it. Secondly we started selling upfront to defend it. Funds that should be used for provision of infrastructure were used to defend the naira. We got to a dead end so we have to reverse the old order. Of course it will affect everything in the economy. We are going back to the Asian model. Devalue, make imports more expensive to discourage imports and encourage local production. Exporters will earn more. In time past I personally use foreign suits, shirts, perfume etc. They are too expensive now so I use locally produced ones. My shoes are still foreign but I manage them carefully because they are not cheap to buy. |

tunjijones:The answer is simple, and you have answered that already. Things go expensive cos we feel the shock significantly, simply because we are not self sufficient and we are largely a consuming nation rather than a manufacturing nation. |
