The Sierra Leone Police Authority has arrested a Nigerian national, Patrick Nonso, at the Freetown International Airport after he was allegedly found in possession of 46 wraps of a white substance suspected to be cocaine.

PUNCH Metro gathered from a Sierra Leonean news platform, Sierraloaded, on Tuesday that the suspect was apprehended on Sunday during routine airport screening.

According to the report, “The suspect, identified as Patrick Nonso, was detained on Sunday, February 22, 2026, after authorities discovered 46 wraps of a white substance suspected to be cocaine during routine checks at the Freetown International Airport.”

The publication further disclosed that Nonso was travelling with an Italian passport at the time of his arrest and was immediately taken into custody by officers of the Sierra Leone Police.

Providing an update on the development, police authorities were quoted as saying, “The suspect is currently in police custody and is cooperating fully with investigators.”

The report added that an investigation had been launched to determine the origin of the suspected narcotics and to establish whether other individuals were involved.

“Authorities have opened an inquiry to trace the source of the suspected narcotics and to ascertain if there are accomplices,” the report stated.

It noted that no formal charges had yet been announced, as forensic analysis was ongoing to confirm the exact composition and weight of the seized substance.

Investigators are also said to be reviewing the suspect’s travel and immigration records as part of the probe.

According to the publication, airport security officials cooperated fully with law enforcement in line with established protocols for handling suspected controlled substances.

Police authorities assured that further updates would be provided as the investigations progress.

Just yesterday, a report on the weak global standing of the Nigerian passport took centre stage here. And, surprise, surprise the very crowd whose collective habits don’t exactly help our international reputation were busy blaming it on President Tinubu.

When someone politely asked them to explain the connection, they didn’t bother with logic, they simply unleashed insults reaching all the way back to the poor fellow’s great-grandparents.

Now, if shady illicit powder deals like this don’t contribute significantly to a passport’s lack of prestige, then what exactly does?

I'm tired of this headlines....Stop generalising and name the specific people and region engaging in this narcotic trade.

God willing the disruption in their Mexico supply chain will give us some respite from their unending shamelessness.

At some point, we may need to begin to declare sub-nationalities of people who deliberately export their greed and crime to damage Nigeria's fragile reputation.

I am tired of being assumed to be a criminal just because I carry a green passport.

Can you or Tinubu kindly explain the source of his wealth?
Or can you forfeit thousands of pounds for the sake of it if it is your hard sweat?

Moomoo, you can't just walk freely from a drug crime with just forfiture.
If that's the case, many people in prison for drug crimes will be walking freely.
People are doing 10, 20, 30 years even life in prison in the US for drugs crimes. You think they will not be glad to do forfiture and walk free?
Most of you just read trash online and believe it

Sigh…..

Situation is really getting out of hands. Can imagine what it feels like traveling or transiting with a Nigerian passport to a African country now. The profiling will be out of this world.

My brothers have casted everywhere!
