President Bola Tinubu has dismissed allegations that he is behind defections from opposition parties to the ruling All Progressives Congress, insisting he neither coerced nor pressured anyone to abandon their political platforms.

The President made the remarks on Wednesday during an interfaith Iftar with senators at the Presidential Villa, where he addressed claims that his administration is working to weaken opposition parties.

Responding to critics, Tinubu said they were entitled to their opinions but rejected accusations of wrongdoing.

He added that he could not fault politicians who chose to defect, likening their decisions to leaving a “sinking ship,” while pointing to terrorism and banditry as major national challenges contributing to political tensions.

“Critics must talk. When they accused me of killing the opposition, but I didn’t have a gun. I could have given myself a licence when I have the authority.

“But I can’t blame anybody for jumping out of a sinking ship if they did. What we have faced in the challenging period of this country, the terrorism and banditry, is causing us havoc.

The President urged political leaders to prioritise unity in line with the vision of Nigeria’s founding fathers, stressing that constitutional democracy is meant to foster cooperation rather than conflict.

“And we should pull together, unite in a way that our forefathers contemplated to bring about a constitutional democracy and pull us together. They didn’t say we should fight. It’s a good thing that we are working in harmony.”

I didn't have a gun.... sounds like something a manipulator would say to prove their innocence. No one ever said you had a gun.

I wonder why people say Tinubu kill opposition, some even say he pays so and so billions for each governor to cross to the ruling party. There's no politician like Tinubu and Wike in the country. He's winning 2027 election without a tangible opposition. I know some obedientss will still believe Tinubu has to rig before winning next election. Anyway, new Nigeria is POsible shocked

Atiku who kept jumping from PDP to APC to PDP and will go to back to Dubai after every loss of election till another election time.

The journey to Nigeria’s presidential seat is not a tea party, it’s a contest of strength, and naturally, the strongest contender takes the crown.

So all these dramatic tales about Tinubu “decimating the opposition” are, frankly, a pile of rubbish. What exactly was he expected to do, breastfeed the opposition?

In boxing, hitting below the belt is a foul. In kickboxing, however, almost everywhere is fair game. Nigerian politics is not a polite boxing match; it’s full-contact kickboxing. Therefore, all these sinking politicians wailing from the sidelines might consider less complaining and more training.

As far as the rulebook goes, Tinubu appears to be playing within the electoral framework. If anyone disagrees, the floor is open, kindly present the evidence, not the emotions.

Even the electoral bill Tinubu signed into law is a clear attempt to tell the opposition when his law makers removed indirect primaries from the electoral act.
