The Africa Cup of Nations schedule is a major reason why Manchester United did not try to sign Victor Osimhen, according to the club’s former first-team coach Benni McCarthy.

Nigeria striker Osimhen attracted attention from Europe’s elite sides after scoring 26 league goals in 2022-23 to help fire Napoli to a first Italian title in 33 years.

“If you spend £100m on a player, you don’t want to lose him for Afcon,” McCarthy, South Africa legend, told Newsday on the BBC World Service.

“I think he would have been very successful there. But it [Afcon] was a big stumbling block.

“Losing him for so many important matches, the team suffers not having the main striker there.

“So the decision was made. Literally [a] big part was because of the Afcon and Victor Osimhen’s name got scratched off – not a player of interest because of that.”

Truly they need to reorganize this AFCON thing, I think playing it every year now is bad already, it will keep losing relevance.

The problem is the rainy season. Setting AFCON around June-August, when most subsaharn african countries would be seeing rain falling...is not conducive for the game here.

Even when Equatorial Guinea hosted the AFCON, then rain issue was a big problem despite the tournament holding in January self.

Mbeumo had ready - made replacements in the squad in mason mount or zirkzee. Man utd don't have many options upfront especially because they knew signing a new striker would mean releasing Rasmus.

Seriously? This is why Africa is not taking seriously. Change your name for us to recognise you as a human being and many Africans like yourself think that is the gold standard.

Other Manu players can play in AFCON but Victor cannot. When all Africans should speak with sense we have some you saying yes Africa must change to accommodate some racist views from Manu

Nwankwo Kanu played for Arsenal and played AFCON

Samuel Etoo playerd for Barcelona and played AFCON

El Hadji Diouf played for Liverpool and played AFCON

What are we even doing with a 2 year tournament? AFCON is too frequent . 4 years and during the season break is much better. They are constantly playing even on World Cup years and underperform at the World Cup. The World Cup is played when most world leagues are on break . Same with the European cup. AFCON is played mid season every two years . Take your time to organize a world class tournament , not one where the refs are useless and host nations are stealing towels up and down .

So African players should abandon the biggest tournament in Africa because of a foreign club? Naah, it's just an excuse.

Eto'o was signed to Barcelona, it didn't stop him from participating in the AFCON. The likes of Kanu, Okocha, also played for top clubs, Hakimi is in PSG, no excuses, they weren't prevented from representing their their fatherland.

Enough with the excuses. Man U isn't a serious club.

Manchester United didn't sign Victor Osimhen because of his wage demand and not any AFCON.

Had the wage issue settled, United could have gotten him for around £70m-£75m.

Same with Chelsea.

Victor Osimhen was asking for £400k Weekly.
