Sangoamadioha1:Ah, I wish you were right...but the problem is, it isn't. Assuming oil prices stay at 80 dollars per barrel...that's 55 billion dollars yearly revenue from 1.9 million barrels.. That is 243 dollars for every nigerian. Scanty. If the subsidy program is corruption free, I believe the government will be capable of running the program.Even if we remove corruption (which is kind of impossible, otherwise many nations with subsidy would have told us how they did it)...the palaver is, we would still face the problems of production cost, expansion costs and upgrade costs...both of which would rise without any regard for our revenue, and at a pace beyond which government can keep up with And I forgot gas costs...gas prices rise as well too. (Add the fact that most gas suppliers in nigeria don't take Naira in payment...they want dollars. Yes, even NGC, which is a subsidiary of NNPC. Government can't force them to change their mind at all.). (That's why businesses take loans for say upgrades...it is because costs can rise beyond what is expected). But since government is paying subsidy, that means subsidy costs will rise with the rise in production, expansion and upgrade costs. That means a large hole in the budget...caused by taking money from other sectors like health, educaiton etc...to pay for subsides. And the hole would be filled by...more borrowing. Extreme amounts of borrowing. Same issue for power and for petrol. That's why removing subsides...or restricting subsides to very very poor people ..or paying for subsides like they do in genramy and denmark at very high tax rates...which go up with your income...ends up being the way. Nigerians do not want to pay high taxes ....(tax uptake as at 2024 to state and goverments came from 44% of the populaition, and the rate was below 24%)...so subsidy removal, or more debt resulteth |

nairalanda1:you only knows about textbooks economy. Reality is different and only people with experience can understand how reality works |
| Re: Declining Electricity Output Caused By Lack Of Gas And Generation Shortfalls by nairalanda1(m): 3:28pm On Feb 27 |
fineboynl:Well, it isn't textbook economy. We have been doing subsidised electricity since at least 1978...and since then things have gotten worse. Ivory coast was doing subsidised electricity until 1993. Back then they had peace, but they also had power cuts, and system collapses (the last major one was in 1984.). Then in 1993, they removed subsides, and privatised power from top to bottom....and the result was 24 hour power supply, despite having a civil war and several severe crisis. And it is not that Ivory coast is free of corruption (the guy who privatised power was a corrupt bigot)...but since it got profitable, the sector has had money to improve things. Hell, the WOrld Bank invested money in the thing, among other investors. Now that's practical economics. NO investor would invest in any sector that has subsidy. That is why subsidy on fuel went when dangote was ready to open his refinery. |

nairalanda1:Ok, in a nutshell, you believe government should not subsidize anything. Everything should be left to the citizens to pay. Although you make a strong case but I believe the masses need subsidy taking into consideration our wage level in this country. Without government subsidy basic things we need to survive will be out of reach for the average Nigerian. That is my own opinion anyway. |

nairalanda1:this is a simple logic. The band A as a test run program failed. It failed and further increament will fall as well. The band A increased cuase serious issue to the economy. Hotels increased their service. Restaurant and bar increased their service. Frozen food increase their service. Poorer people reduced their electricity consumption. I no longer putting on my air conditioner except for extreme conditions. All of which didn’t even brought value to the increase. So its failed F9. And out more people in suffering |
| Re: Declining Electricity Output Caused By Lack Of Gas And Generation Shortfalls by nairalanda1(m): 3:45pm On Feb 27*. Modified: 7:43am On Feb 28 |
fineboynl:Band A failed because at the end, any revenue generated from band A was less than the losses from the other bands Here are the band costs Band A (Min. 20 hrs): ~₦209.50/kWh.Only band A pays the cost reflective tarrifs...the rest do not. That means out of every 5 consumers, DISCOS make profit from one and lose between 141-178 naira PER kwh sold for the others. Add the fact that subsidy costs, even when fully paid, don't cover losses totally, and subsidy costs have been problematic because last year, oil prices stayed below the budget benchmark, making it difficult to fund the normal budget talkless of subsidy....and you see why the band A is not working so to speak Plus the losses even affect the ability of the power sector to keep on supplying band A with 24/7 power...I mean when subsidy is causing chronic losses moneywise. See the issue. Poorer people reduced their electricity consumption. I no longer putting on my air conditioner except for extreme conditions.SO, let's do what Ivory coast and Ghana does, and remove subsides, so that we can attract sane investors who would pour in money, leading to improvement (Ivory coast and ghana have corruption issues too). |

nairalanda1:You are always everywhere on nairaland defending governments incompetence. |
| Re: Declining Electricity Output Caused By Lack Of Gas And Generation Shortfalls by nairalanda1(m): 3:49pm On Feb 27 |
Sangoamadioha1:Well, what I believe in is productive subsides...where government pays subsides to the producers, not consumption subsides, which is what we have been doing Also, subsides are bad for the workers in the sector....because it means that the sector cannot earn enough money to generate jobs and retain workers. (Recently KADUNA disco sacked over 200 workers...because lack of funds due to lack of cost reflective tarrifs means they can';t keep them on the payroll...and then they also had issues paying pension contributions and so forth). The only way we can afford decent consumption subsides is by high tax rates for all..and I mean all...or taking on more and more debt... |
| Re: Declining Electricity Output Caused By Lack Of Gas And Generation Shortfalls by nairalanda1(m): 3:51pm On Feb 27 |
sirblend:Well, if I was to defend government incompetence,....I would be defending subsides on power, not adovcating for their removal. Plus, if we wanted a subsidy that would pay for costs, AND pay for expansion and improvement...that would mean that government would have to drop at least 20 trillion naira annually. Ya budget is not up to 60 trillion naira at the moment. |

See Dem justifying a price hike in the electricity price like the novice that they are, they think paying 50000 for one kilowatt will automatically make the electricity available. |

Went to IKEDC office today and there was no light, how would they take your not having light issues seriously... didn't have light throughout January yet I received bill for light... went to ask for prepaid meter .. it wasn't available cos it's by connection.. proceed to pay for my for the unseen, unused energy ... guess what someone shortchanged me.. I paid 8k.. the online bill said I paid 7k... fraud.. corruption these are the reasons why people think the Grass must be greener on the other side .. pay huge unreasonable amount to run away.. hope caused by incompetence and corruption. A degree used to be synonymous with integrity...not being moved by material things but intellectual drive to do the right things... until the kleptocrats made their way in... and now it's plunder as much as u can.... okay... my rant is over |

sirblend:Which unfortunately is very very true. Over 68 per cent of electricity consumers in Nigeria are illegally bypassing their prepaid meters and consuming power without payment, the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has revealed.SAUCE |

Blazebond:On the other hand , if you were a breadseller who sold bread at N20 per loaf to help the poor, or sold cars at N10000 per car to ensure the poor all had cars, or sold exercise books at N1 so that the kids of the poor would be able to go to school, or you owned a school that charged fees of N5 per pupil so that the poor could get education, and the government gave you no money to cover your losses....., you would go out of buisness in short order. |

nairalanda1:Some of us are on Band A, duh? |
| Re: Declining Electricity Output Caused By Lack Of Gas And Generation Shortfalls by nairalanda1(m): 3:45pm On Mar 01 |
Abee79:Well, band A people are 20% of the consumer base, the rest pay prices that aren't cost reflective. Add difficulties in paying subsides due largely to low oil prices, as well as power theft from about 40% of consumers...and that means the losses dwarf the profits from band A Thus improvements can't be made for everyone. |
