“When You Come To My Media Chat, Prepare Very Well” — Otti Tells Journalist by Metrix147(op): 9:49am On Feb 28

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has strongly defended the impact of his administration’s reforms, insisting that the results of governance in the state are visible and can be felt by residents in their daily lives.

The exchange occurred during the February edition of “Governor Alex Otti Speaks to Abians”, when a journalist, Chika Nwabueze of Don Media Group, asked the governor to provide measurable and transparent data showing how his policies have improved the economic and living conditions of ordinary Abians beyond infrastructure projects.

The journalist noted that while the administration had received praise for visible road construction and reforms, critics believe more verifiable evidence is needed to demonstrate inclusive governance and measurable economic impact.

Responding, Governor Otti questioned the foundation of the inquiry and challenged the journalist directly.

“You have not said anything. Do you live in Abia?” the governor asked.

He went further to cite practical examples of changes residents experience daily.

“The road you use, is it tarred? Do your children pay school fees? But you see, children that don’t pay school fees, right?”

Otti insisted that the monthly media engagement is a serious forum and should not be used for what he described as poorly framed questions.

“This media chat is a serious media chat. We are not here to massage your opposition,” he said.

“When we throw this open for people to ask questions, it doesn’t mean people should be stupid.”

The governor maintained that governance outcomes should be assessed through observable changes rather than abstract demands for statistics from the executive.

“If you can’t feel what is happening in this state where you live, then I’m sorry, I can’t help you,” he said.

“That’s not my business. My business is to deliver on my promises.”

Listing areas he believes demonstrate measurable progress, Otti referenced improved road infrastructure, reduced accidents and travel time, the introduction of free electric buses, and expanded access to healthcare services.

“Because roads have been done, accidents have reduced, travel time has reduced, and there are electric buses all over the place that are free of charge,” he stated.

“There are 200 primary health care centres that were not here before.”

He added: “If you want the governor to sit and tell you the economic impact, then something is wrong.”

Concluding the exchange, Governor Otti advised journalists to come better prepared for future sessions.

“Next time, when you are coming to ask a question, prepare very well,” he said.

Despite the tense moment, the governor reiterated that his administration remains focused on delivering on campaign promises and believes that government performance should be evaluated based on visible outcomes and practical improvements that residents can independently verify.

Funny enough, he has done well.

The question was valid but the response: condemnable.
Eboofa:
That's a stupid ass question! You want the governor to explain all he has done in a 2 hour session? Na only him Waka come abi?
Is this what you will have said if Sanwo-Olu responded in like manner?
You are talking about not just a Governor or any banker but a former CEO of a top-tier bank?

Whilst he was at Diamond Bank, will he have responded same to the Board of Directors?

Tangible evidence everywhere, full ground,

e choke!

Even yarimo would marvel at the level of transformation happening in Abia and wish Alex Otti could be his state governor, even if just for a few months.

Ndi Abia are really, really lucky.

Governor Otti, I am afraid you are not right. Governance is policy-driven and you must outline your goals and objectives before embarking on projects. Once you accomplish certain projects, you weigh the before and after impact of its completion using verifiable data.

Abia State MDAs should include providing data to the list of functions they perform. The government cannot get statistical data from the media - the reverse should be the case. The journalist raised that point mostly because such development data isn't readily available and Governor Otti has a duty to provide it.

Imagine sanwo Olu,soludo or any other APC governor speak to journalist like that, headless mobs won’t rest

Dr Alex Otti should learn to be humble. The reporter asked a harmless question. That is his job. So calling him "stupid" because he asked you to give verifiable evidence of the impact of your acclaimed achievements is uncalled for. All journalists cannot be pocketed, Mr governor.

Poor journalism. What's this hesitation in grammar flow and 'ermmm'? What sort of journalists do we have in this country? Same way Nairaland bloggers slap us AI generated plastic, soulless junk without reserving any sense of human creativity. Sick. Anyways, Governor Otti is not a journalist. The question thrown at him is the work of a journalist as Otti correctly points. The journalist is simply asking questions for the sake of asking questions or maybe to impress his organization, which woefully fails to do. There's sth called solution journalism.

Nigerian politicians generally do not know how to parry questions. The response from the governor is actually the correct answer to the journalist's question. But instead of concentrating on his answer, he is busy attacking the journalist. The governor got this one wrong. Don't expect journalists to always ask soft questions.

You'd always be sitting on the opposite side of anything positive and progressive. You can roll out all useless data, as long as the citizens aren't feeling the impact then you haven't done anything. Go to Abia State and interview 100 persons about the impact of the Governor, hear them out and then write your epistle.

The use of insulting words on anyone is a natural from that wing of the country.
It will never hurt again when I see them here hurl such words at me, like they would do.

It is what they met at home.

It's the duty of the journalist to research/investigate the effect of the infrastural development on the citizens, not the other way round. You expect the governor to tell how the road, hospitals, schools, electricity, etc, he has provided has helped the people, abi?

There should be a a departmemt of reaserach and stats in the minisistry of finamce or economic development
The governor may not be a statistician
He could have addressed the question in a better way
Also the question could have been better framed too

The journalist: provide measurable and transparent data showing how your policies have improved the economic and living conditions of ordinary Abians beyond infrastructure projects.

Reasonable response should be(assuming he had any):
1. Maternal mortality rates reduced by 60% in my first 6 months in office as obtained from medical records across ?? LGAs
2. Improved road network and reduced accident occurrences in city centers : 50 % reduction as provided by FRSC etc.

It amazes me how we tag politicians (like Rochas okorocha, hope Uzodinma) who give reasonable responses, "illiterates"
while the so call educated ones(umahi, otti) behave like touts in their response.

I was in Abia state last week , I was marvelled and shocked.
The level of infrastructural development is so evident and visible.
Roads well tarred and marked , city centres so beautiful and everywhere well swept and neat wow
I was just shouting wow wow wow

But what did orji kalu ,t.a orji and ipkeazu do for 24years ?

Those men should be hung on a cross and crucify upside down

Otti has proved that governance is very simple and truly it's simple because the money Is there and what the governors and elected officers do with the money to better their citizens is simply governonce

So what the previous governors were busy doing were to steal the state allocation and revenue .
What a sharp contrast .

To develop Nigeria, simply create 37 Otti and place them across all states of the federaltion as governors and fct minister .
With 4 years , development will be so evident

Note

Otti has done just within 3 years what
Orji kalu, t.a orji and ikpeazu couldn't do for 24 years

Shame on those ex Abia governors

Shame on them

If na Wike do this, everywhere for don scatter.

It was a simple question. If you knew you will be defensive about journalist questions, why organize a media chat? You for kuku invite only journalists living in Abia then.

This is one thing you can never see Tinubu do. Tinubu will accept any question no matter how petty and use it to communicate/publicize his policy. He uses situation to his own advantage.

Small pressure, you don dey convulse.

And our journalists are to be blamed tbh. They don't push back or ask follow up questions when they interview these public officers. They just eat up whenever they say. So in the rare occasion they are really plastered with queries, they think journalists are are out for blood.

It's only Ruffy of Arise TV that put the heat on during interview, even though he oversteps boundaries and is selective.

Economic impact is the key word but these politicians are not that exposed to know what that is. All they know is widen the tax net so they can boast of increased IGR.
They are not talking of Job creation and poverty alleviation. No plans to recover wild and waste lands and process it raw materials and natural resources.

As long as there is someone singing their praise, they are on the right path.

But he still answered the questions, so why attack the journalist for doing his job. Even if you feel the journalist is sympathetic to the opposition, you still have a duty to provide answers. Remember, it is an opportunity to tell the people exactly what you're doing.

I like this.

This is the same kind of petty journalism that Rufai Oseni is doing at Arise TV and you all are clapping for him.

Do you own research, you cannot be questioning an executive for what you can find out yourself

Even this one that appeared humble is so full of pride that when he invites journalists to ask him questions he wants to dictate the particular questions to be asked. Sick of this country's culture.
