However, there is also an important distinction between isolated small-scale farming operations and[b] structured agricultural estates with proper management, security planning, and cluster development models.[/b]

Across Nigeria today, there are still large commercial plantations operating successfully — particularly in crops like cocoa and oil palm — because they are organized differently from the traditional approach.

The issue is not that agriculture cannot work; it’s that[b] the old unstructured model is increasingly difficult to sustain.[/b]

Countries like Indonesia and Malaysia built multi-billion-dollar palm oil industries by transitioning from scattered trees to professionally managed plantations. Nigeria actually pioneered palm oil exports long before them.

Conversations like this are exactly why some of us are advocating for more Nigerians to start thinking about organized perennial crop investments (cocoa and oil palm) instead of leaving everything to subsistence farming.

The potential is still there — what needs to change is the structure and scale of how it is done.
