What does this mean to Nigerians?
Nigeria not being on this list might make some people happy and they know themselves, but it doesn’t automatically mean we are doing great.

Debt to GDP simply compares what a country owes to the size of its economy. Even if we’re not among the top 10, what really matters is: Can we comfortably pay our debts without struggling?

If a country earns little but borrows a lot, repayment becomes stressful even if it’s not on a “most indebted” list.
So instead of celebrating or arguing politics, the real question should be:
Are we growing the economy? Are we earning enough revenue? Is the borrowed money improving people’s lives?

That’s what truly matters.

God bless Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.

The prophets of doom have suddenly gone missing. They were fully prepared to see Nigeria towering above every other country combined, ready with megaphones and dramatic headlines.

But now? Absolute silence. Not even a whisper. It appears there’s no opportunity this time to advertise the packaged fraud, so their marketing department has quietly shut down operations.

You don't understand what it means to Nigerians, but you were the chief town crier, shouting from every rooftop that Tinubu had borrowed so much money that even a reunion of a hundred future generations would still be passing around the debt like a family heirloom.

This is how Asiwaju will be shutting everybody up.

I see some people are already celebrating grin grin, the usual culprits never disappoints. Now let me educate you lots.

Yes, countries like Senegal, South Africa, Egypt, Kenya, Zambia and Rwanda have higher debt compared to the size of their economies than Nigeria that’s why they appear on the list.

But here’s the important part:
Nigeria still spends a huge chunk of its income just to pay back loans, often more than some of those listed countries do. That means less money for roads, hospitals, education and jobs even if we aren’t top 10.

Some countries on the list have stronger government revenue or better growth, so they can handle higher debt better than Nigeria. Simply having a higher percentage doesn’t automatically make a country worse off.
Other listed countries like Egypt and South Africa have bigger formal economies and foreign investments, which helps them manage large debts more sustainably.

So not being on this list is not automatically good news ooooo, it just shows the type of debt measure used. The more important issue for us is whether Nigeria is earning enough and using what it borrows wisely.

We shouldn’t celebrate a statistic without real context.

There is nothing bad in debt provided it is not for paying workers salaries.

Yinmu...ask any non partisan economist,
They will let you know that its not about absolute debt but the debt to gdp ratio!..That is why USA is the most indebted country in tbe whole world because they have gdp to chest it.

Just like currency value is not as important as the stability.Just off recent,OBJ praised PBAT on naira stability.

Although currency value and the absolute debt value are good for political campaigns to decieve the gullible masses

You’re right that debt to GDP matters. That’s exactly what this list is about. But economists don’t stop there. They also look at how much revenue a country earns.

Countries like South Africa and Egypt may have higher debt to GDP than Nigeria, but they generate more government income relative to their economies. Nigeria has one of the lowest revenue to GDP ratios in Africa, which means government earns little compared to the size of the economy .
So even if our debt to GDP is lower, repayment can still be stressful because income is weak. It’s not about absolute debt. It’s not about politics. It’s about whether a country can comfortably pay what it owes.

You quoted my question before I even finished the full post.

And for clarity, asking what it means to Nigerians doesn’t mean I don’t understand it. It means I want people to think beyond headlines.

Debt to GDP is one measure. But even economists agree that what truly matters is whether a country earns enough revenue to service that debt comfortably. Pointing out borrowing levels isn’t town crying, it’s discussing fiscal policy. Governments borrow everywhere, but the real issue is sustainability and impact.

What matters is, is the borrowing improving people's lives?

You are right.

That is why tinubu came up with the TAX REFORM.
We have a larger gdp than kenya but has a lower Tax to gdp ration of less that 18% which is the standard. Our budget is not even as big as that of kenya despite the fact that we have the higher gdp.

Check the headline below, dont only ask Tinubu what he does with tge Tax,ask your governors too, they are the closest to you..because "January marked the first full month under the revised VAT sharing formula. Under the new structure, 10 per cent of net VAT goes to the Federal Government, 55 per cent to state governments, and 35 per cent to Local Governments."https://punchng.com/tax-law-vat-hits-record-n1tn-as-new-sharing-era-begins/

Again, the word "TAX" alone is also good for political campaign just like debt and currency value.Politics is sweet, the opposition will know that the ruling party is doing the right thing but will use the masses Ignorance of the policy to score cheap political points
