President Bola Tinubu has ordered immediate suspension of the controversial cashless policy introduced by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN.

This is coming barely four days after its rollout triggered massive gridlock at major airports nationwide.

DAILY POST reports that the policy, launched on March 1, mandated digital payments via ‘Go Cashless’ cards or POS systems for airport access gates, parking and lounges.

It sparked severe traffic jams at key facilities such as Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, resulting in long queues, stranded motorists and numerous missed flights.

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace, Festus Keyamo, announced the suspension of the policy while briefing State House Correspondents on the outcome of the Federal Executive Council, FEC, meeting presided over by President Tinubu.

According to the minister, Tinubu asked the aviation ministry and the leadership of FAAN to halt implementation, pending a review.

The President equally ordered them to “go back to the drawing board” and develop a more people‑friendly alternative that balances revenue transparency goals with passenger convenience.

They supposed to test run it along with the old method for certain hours for certain weeks, from there, they can gradually see the loopholes, see where they need improvements, see either to increase the usage or reduce it, and by then , many people would have been used to it. It's simple logic na. You can't just bring a strange technology and enforce it without alternative, then expect not to witness problems. Imagine how many flights that will be missed that day or pick up delays, meetings and many important events that would have caused multi millions of dollars? Who will be held responsible? No one and life continues......

Nigeria will always find a way to discourage or abuse something nice. Private sectors are seriously encouraging cashless policy.

I no the next thing many of the staff will do now is to write their own account number and collect the money. They will tell passengers network is not good.

He can if he wants to. The problem is half solutions without strategic preparations that end up causing more problems. We saw it with naira depreciation and fuel subsidy removal. For example you could install a high quality radar sensor and camera that counts how many cars that entered and balance it with how much cash was remitted. How have other developed climes been doing it?

That is why you need to do a proper SWOT analysis before making decisions to avoid looking like a phooool. You can’t just wake up on the first day of office and say “SUBSIDY IS GONE”. Anyways, better late than never. Glad he was able to reverse it on time while they check for loopholes and correct those first .

What do they mean by cashless policy ? Only the use of ATM card or it includes an option to make transfer? I faced similar issue at one of the government ministries of Ogun state few days ago. I went to apply for a client and I was told I could only pay with my ATM card. And me I don’t even have any ; I do all money transactions through transfer. So surprised how bank transfer won’t be made part of the option in that circumstance. I spent almost 5 hours just to pay the government and the government workers too were so non-chalant . I don’t really understand how our leaders in this country come up with policies without proper oversight.

It has very little with officials.frustrating it. There is no way you can collect fees from a long queue of motorists using POS machines.The traffic was terrible. They should have been more creative about the collection.

It's not about corruption fight, it's a policy bound to fail due to the mode of implementation.
I don't know about Abuja, but speaking for Lagos.
80% of toll gate users are not going to the airport but passing through to their destination because it's at the heart of state.
Let a vehicle breakdown towards the toll gate, the traffic is usually something else, now imagine vehicles stopping at once to use their cards for toll payment.
Another thing I noticed is pos charges, 16% charge for using your card, that's extortion, the toll is already expensive at 500 sedan 1k SUV, then adding POS charges on top, I don't pay POS charges at any other sales outlet, why should FAAN be charging for POS

If it affected the masses, nothing will be able to change it.

Direct payment into Federal Accounts is a double edge sword, if implement in Lagos state.

You will be dismantling a lot of cash handlers from exhortation.

You are wrong to say that. Sometimes you plan and get all data right but 100% of the time outcome from implementation are always different that why you refine based on the outcome . there's nothing wrong in iterative procedure. you go back to drawing board check what works and remove what doesn't

This is the analogy the people calling for mandatory real time transmission of election result without any option for manual. Technology can fail at any time. So it is reasonable you create a fallback plan in case of failure. What should be called for is a tight control measures that will not allow fallback to manual. But not creating manual fallback as a last mile option is disastrous and will lead to legal issues after election.

It is the people that are making the implementation of the policy difficult because they don’t want it to work. They will rather deal with cash so it’s easier to steal.

I’m disappointed that this policy hasn’t worked as intended, because its goals are sound—even admirable—but the implementation has been rough.

A cashless policy in government should, in principle, be one of the best ways to conduct business. Digital payments create traceable records, leave clear transaction trails, and help discourage opaque or corrupt practices. When designed properly, they strengthen transparency and accountability.

That said, a cashless system doesn’t have to rely on only one method. There are several practical alternatives that could make the process smoother and more inclusive:

A) Number Plate–Based Access
If a driver is picking someone up at the airport, number-plate recognition technology could be used. The driver would simply visit the FAAN website, register their vehicle’s number plate, select the expected duration of stay, and make payment within minutes. Upon approaching the airport, the system automatically reads the plate and grants entry and exit without delays.

B) Temporary Access Cards
Drivers who do not already have a CashlessGo card could be issued a temporary card at the entry point. After completing their activities at the airport, they would make payment at a designated booth before exiting. The payment would then be linked to the temporary card, which could be used to open the exit gate.

C) Virtual CashlessGo Cards
Drivers could also have a virtual CashlessGo card embedded in a mobile app. Like topping up mobile airtime, users could easily add funds through various outlets or digital channels. On arrival at the airport, they would simply open the app and scan their virtual card using FAAN’s portable system to gain entry.

With the right mix of technology and user-friendly options, the policy could still achieve its original aim: a transparent, efficient, and corruption-resistant system that works for everyone.

Kudos to Mr Keyamo and Ms Kuku. You and your team are doing a great job.
