Finally, hope we all remember that Shop rite shops and other retail stores outlets have been closing down gradually since time of GEJ.... Only got worsens during Buhari and finally collapsed during BAT...... Some foreign companies too packed up and left during GEJ, many during Buhari and lots during BAT...... Nigeria government needs to do better than continuously looking for Direct Foreign Investments abroad, wasting resources in Billions of dollars.... What have you done to secure the already DFI in your country?
This is a lie from the pit of hell, ShopRite and other Retail outlets sales were booming during GEJ presidency and this continued into Buhari's first three yrs in office, afterwards the economic faced a downturn which got way worse with Tinubu's economic reforms. Big Pharmaceutical companies, FMCG, Retail outlets, Multinational corporations have all exited the country in droves in the past 3 years.

i think this is not about politics pls. Nigerians are greedy when it comes to management. They only care about power and money. Since south Africa pulled out, the place has not remain the same. U are comparing spar that is still operating under the Indians to store operating by Nigerians.

So why do they desperately want to pin it on the government and the economy.

Because I wonder what the other outlets are doing that ShopRite isn't doing

People should learn to be constructive in their criticism.

What is happening to ShopRite today is simply the result of market realities. For years, the company failed to adapt to changing consumer behavior and the rapidly evolving retail landscape. While ShopRite largely maintained its traditional large-store format, newer competitors moved quickly to bring retail closer to the customer.

Bokku, in particular, has been very strategic in its expansion. By opening numerous neighborhood outlets and offering competitive pricing, it effectively took the market directly to the doorstep of customers who previously depended on ShopRite. In addition, the rise of online retail platforms now allows customers to place orders from the comfort of their homes and have goods delivered to them. This shift toward convenience has significantly reduced the need for many consumers to travel long distances to large retail stores.

In my area alone, there are more than 10 Bokku supermarkets, while only one ShopRite serves the same community. Across the wider area, where ShopRite has just a single outlet, Bokku likely operates more than 30 locations. When customers have multiple nearby options and can also order online for home delivery, it becomes increasingly difficult for a single large outlet to dominate the market.

The lesson is clear: in today’s retail environment, success depends on accessibility, convenience, competitive pricing, and the ability to integrate physical stores with online ordering and delivery services. Businesses that fail to adapt to these market realities risk gradually losing relevance, regardless of how strong their brand once was.

Now let me ask you this question - If you have an enterprise you are using as a front to launder money as you claim would you allow it to collapse knowing fully well that it means you would no longer have the opportunity to do your money laundering and still earn you usual commissions? undecided

Bokku, jandol and shop rite taking the market to the common man, especially Bokku.

Shop rite just wanted to remain in Alausa where only the rich and middle class can go, since APC government took over, the number of rich and middle class people reduce and most of them couldn't afford to go to Alausa again.

Jandol and shop rite price was fair and then came Bokku, now we don't really need shop rite again.
I can count the number of times have been to shop rite, probably not up to 4 times.
I wish all the people commenting here would just read your comment and shut up.

TIMES AND SEASONS DETERMINE BUSINESS STRATEGY.

There used to be a time you had to get a TV.
Now? I don't even put on my 100 inch Samsung.

There used to be a time TV/Radio stations needed big land and plenty staffs to operate.
Now? Rent a 3 bedroom and a well paid graphics editor.

There used to be a time going to Shop Rite was the in-thing.
Now? Walk to Bokku or order online and it's delivered to you.

If you operate a big business, just read Ecclesiastes 3: 1-8.

How does having 10 Bokku stores in close proximity of each other make strategic business sense.

I can assure you that Bokku business is not a profitable as people think, the only reason why it appears like it's thriving is because the owners probably still have a lot of cash to throw around.

I just hope they have a solid internal control system in place, if not the level of pilferage going on there would be monumental!

Re: Shoprite Completes Shut-Down In Nigeria by femmy2010(m): 9:25am On Mar 08
The question is what replaced shoprite?.
The real worry would be when stores such as Ebeano, Blenco, justrite, Jendo etc closes .
If they keep opening newer branches then it might just be a failed business model that ended the lifespan if Shoprite.

The eyesore on Bourdillon Road
2nd January 2025

Beyond his neighbours, there is something about the sight of people hanging around a president’s residence that does not speak well of his leadership capabilities. Maybe no one has nudged him to see it, but the impression that spectacle on Bourdillon Road generates is that Tinubu enjoys the sight of suffering humans and thrives in—and through— their poverty.

If all these years, impoverished people hang around you and you remain comfortable enough to keep them just so they can be handed tokens of your large heart, then it means you have a pro-poverty mindset. Such a frame of mind is oriented toward cultivating poverty rather than stimulating abundance.

That is why he could unproblematically relate the story of his “friend” who went from using five Rolls Royce to a far-less valued car and not consider the import of the nonsense he was saying. That spurious account was an indication that this is a man for whom poverty—of others, not himself—is an ideal.

Count GEJ out of it.

Shoprite made its entry under Obasanjo’s government is December 2005 and flourished all through the PDP years. When you all decided that PDP was punishing Nigerians and voted for a certain Buhari, ably supported by Tinubu, Atiku, Kwakwanso, Amaechi, Wole Soyinka, Tunde Bakare, Femi Anikulapo Kuti, etc, you did not know that you were driving Nigeria into locust years. Shoprite started shutting down during APC years, just like other businesses and completely wound down during the APC years.

Shoprite largely depended on imported goods, that’s what made then unique and the resort of Nigerians and foreigners alike. The local supermarkets like Justrite, Jendol and Bokku are typical Nigerian supermarkets, where only locally sourced goods are found. That’s why they are thriving. Shoprite provided all that you needed. You could get even fresh tomatoes, croaker fish and all you needed to make your lunch. Which of the Nigerian supermarkets do such? They are limited to Nigerian sourced goods and Shoprite cannot coke with it.

There’s no difference in the prices found between be wholly Nigerian owned supermarkets and Shoprite. Infact some goods used to be cheaper in Shoprite than the wholly Nigerian ones. APC killed that business and nothing more. How? Foreign exchange scarcity, enforced by Buhari.

So as already stated by you, the government cannot be talking about FDI, while stifling those ones operating already.

TLDR:

Shop rite has shut down finally

APC and Corona Virus; two serious diseases led to their exit

Shopping malls now have lower foot fall since Shoprite was the primary reason a lot of people visited the malls. This is evident at Lugbe Mall...the once bubbling mall is now pretty much empty

Thank you APC, Thank your Buhari , Thank you Jagaban

how many Bokku stores, justrite, jendol, Reno, spar, were competing with shop rite? Today on many streets there are super markers and superstores, most people don't need to travel across local governments to find a ShopRite. That's the reality.

What exactly is the issue with ShopRite
This’s the question right here. Are people just being mischievous or they forgot how other big retail outlets sprang up after ShopRite’s success.
And all these other shops didn’t require for you to drive to walk to a mall just to shop. They were in all our neighborhoods.
In Abuja for instance, H-Medix put an outlet in almost every district. Infact in Gwarimpa, there are 3 outlets.
So, yes, Shoprite was muscled out of the market.
Incase I need to remind anyone, Ebaano, H-Medix et al are still in business.
