The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), on Saturday, shut down South Africa’s grocery chain, Shoprite, at Ota in Ogun State.

The students picketed the shopping mall to protest what they described as unrestrained xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa.

Scores of young Nigerians residing in South Africa have been brought home in body bags in recent years, having been killed in apparent xenophobic attacks in the former apartheid nation.

The Shoprite mall was shut down around 11:10 a.m. in the presence of policemen with shoppers hurriedly ordered out of the mall.

The students carried placards with inscriptions: “South Africans must go. Enough of the killing of our brothers, sisters and relatives in South Africa. You can’t continue to kill our people and still feed fat on us’’.

Speaking with reporters, the National Public Relations Officer of NANS, Mr Azeez Adeyemi, said that “NANS’ leadership under its President, Mr Danielson Bamidele, has resolved to champion the struggle of putting sense back into lawless South Africans.

“It seems the government of South Africa derives pleasure from the senseless killings and sees the continuous xenophobic attacks on Nigerians residents in South Africa as a norm.

“NANS’ struggle against xenophobia has moved beyond ordinary street protests.

“Our target now is to mobilise Nigerian students and Nigerians towards truncating the smooth running of South African businesses in Nigeria.

“We shall resume here at Shoprite, Stanbic IBTC, MTN and Multichoice on August 14 for a total shut down. This is a struggle that will continue until the victory of purpose is achieved,” Adeyemi said.

On August 5, students shut down MTN and Stanbic IBTC Bank offices in Abeokuta to voice their anger over the relentless killing of Nigerians in South African cities.

Up to 800,000 Nigerians, mainly young people reside in South Africa, according to unofficial estimates.

No fewer than 128 Nigerians have been killed in the country since 2016, many of them murdered by South African policemen.

However, some of the Nigerians were reportedly killed by fellow Nigerians in gang violence linked to hard drug peddling.

Wonders shall never end! Most Nigerians who died here were killed by other Nigerians, a few others were killed by criminals, not necessarily South African criminals and your students punish Shoprite for that!
Can somebody please advise or help these students to do their research? Maybe President Buhari should arrange for them to come here as part of a facr-finding mission.
Our police will show them the files and evidence. They should also know that 57 people die everyday in crimie related incidents in this country and are almost always South African. Only once in a while, a Nigerian or some other foreigner becomes part of that statistical idata. No Nigerian has ever died due to or in the course of a so-called but non existent xenophobic violence. We don't hate Nigerians or other humans. If we did, we wouldn't allow them to marry our daughters or receive free medical care and other services. The main and perhaps only problem between Nigerians and South Africans is crime, particularly the devastating effect of the type they specialise in (kidnappings, drug and human trafficking).
Officially, there's less than a million Nigerians here. However, we know that there's at least 1,5 million Nigerians who for various reasons, good and or bad, have not reported their presence to their Consul. Most Nigerians are happy in this country. They study, work, do business, worship God or Allah. Please don't allow anti South African propaganda to spoil their fun.
