1. From what am seeing here, you shouldn't exceed 70
2. If the area is a sediment, 10 bar is recommended to avoid collapse of the well
3. Point 2 is better than point 6
4. Count the drilling pipes when they are drill drilling ( each pipe should be between 5m to 6m) to determine the actual depth they drilled
7. Give them the full package i.e let them buy all the materials and demand for good and lasting water

Good day everyone.

I need advice from people here who have real experience with borehole drilling.

I carried out a geophysical survey on my plot this month, March 2026 , to determine the best location for a borehole. The survey suggested two possible spots: Point 2 and Point 6, and the recommended drilling depth for both spots is 160 meters.

However, from my layman understanding of the report, it seems like water may be available at a shallower depth than 160m. I may be wrong, which is why I am posting here for expert interpretation.

Attached is the survey image so that those who understand these readings can help explain whether 160m is truly necessary or whether water can reasonably be gotten at a lower depth, especially at Point 2 or Point 6.

I was given the following drilling quotations:

₦17,000 per meter using 8 bar PVC casing
₦18,000 per meter using 8 bar PVC casing

I was told that the difference between the ₦17,000 and ₦18,000 rates is the casing thickness, although the exact diameter and wall thickness were still not stated clearly.

I was also given another quote of:

₦24,000 per meter using 10 bar PVC casing

But again, the diameter and wall thickness were not stated.

I also asked how much it would cost if they do only the drilling/punching, while I buy and supply the casing myself. I was told that drilling/punching only would cost ₦14,000 per meter for the 160m depth.

I want to ask the experts here:

1. Looking at the survey image, does it truly mean I need to drill to 160m at Point 2 or Point 6, or is it possible to get good water at a lower depth?

2. Am I misreading the report where it seems water can be found earlier?

3. Does a recommendation of 160m usually mean that is where the best aquifer is, where the cleanest water is, or that shallower water may not be reliable?

4. Between 8 bar and 10 bar PVC casing, which one is more suitable for a 160m borehole?

5. Since I was told the difference between the ₦17,000 and ₦18,000 per meter quotes is thickness, what exact thickness should I be asking for?

6. What exact PVC casing specification should I be asking for:
diameter, wall thickness, pressure rating, screen/slotted pipe spec, and brand/manufacturer?

7. Is it a red flag for a driller to mention only 8 bar or 10 bar, and say one is thicker, without stating the exact diameter and wall thickness?

8. If I decide to buy the casing myself, what exact specification should I request so I do not buy the wrong one?

9. Apart from casing, what other materials would I need to provide if I go with drilling only/punching only?

10. Is ₦14,000 per meter for punching only not unreasonable?

11. Is it better to let the driller supply everything, or is it safer to buy the casing/materials myself?

12. Between Point 2 and Point 6, which location looks more suitable based on the survey?

13. What other questions should I ask before agreeing to drill?

I do not want to make a costly mistake, so I would really appreciate advice from people who understand borehole drilling and casing specifications well.

Thank you.

please I need help
First and foremost, what is the goal of the borehole? Is it for home or farm/commercial use? If its for home use, there is no need for 160m. With point 2 will even be good with 40m - 50m depth, but if you would use it for commercial, you can make it 70m to 100m to have more buffer. You will need to go to deeper if you will be using the point 6 either for home or commercial use.

My candid advise, don't tell them the depth you would eventually settle for till they get to site, keep counting the number of rig that they use. Each rig is about 5m length (or thereabout) and keep your eyes open. After they must have got to about 40m (or based on use depth I earlier mentioned) on point 2, you should be good water for use.

Please note that this advise is not from an expert.

Recommended depth is 160m approximately 528ft plus n minus 6mtrs...if u minus 6mtrs then Recommended depth is 508ft..u can drill 480ft and it will sustain...
Recommended casing for such depth is 4½inches casing...15 casing (12bar), 15casing (10bar) others can be 8bar....Puncturing is negotiable...
Re: Borehole Experts, Please Help Me Interpret This Survey Report And Drilling Quote by Vickyvicky09(m): 9:59am On Mar 08
If the water at 70m is not enough then you have to reach 180m to tape completely into the aquifer
Re: Borehole Experts, Please Help Me Interpret This Survey Report And Drilling Quote by mtmfrank: 10:17am On Mar 08
The fact is most people believe too much in geological surveys when it comes to borehole. That's quite misleading most times. In every area, local govt and state there are groups of drillers who have mastered the deapth of good water in their territory due to years of drilling in that area. Sometimes earlier in the field geological surveys made us fail some drilling. Just look for guys that have dominated drilling in that area and beg them to use good materials to finish the work.

It is for home use.

The issue with the area is that most boreholes around become dry wells during the dry season, so the person that carried out the survey said the depth must reach a reasonable aquifer zone.

Blue/purple areas = good water zones
Red/orange areas = avoid drilling
Expected water depth around 70–150 meters
Since the water table during dry season in the area tends to become low, I was thinking between 100m - 120m.

Are you living in the eastern part of Nigeria or on a hill? 160 m is way too deep to find water

Anyway don't dig that borehile yourself or use a substandard materials to do it in the name of shaving costs. Follow expert advice

You see where you first strike water during drilling... Which is the closer to be surface you are talking about... That is not where they do it will stop

You are looking for drinking water that has passed through layers and layers of sedimentary rock to be clean enough for drinking

Where you first strike water let us call it point A... The water will never be clean

You must go at least 20 to 30 m deeper. But given your location I would say at least 50 minutes
The plot I am talking about is in Makurdi, Benue State.

1. Choosing 2 or 6 is very okay as far se aquifer is punctured through
2. Do not drill less than 160m but above recommended add extra 10m
3. What's the terrain of your area.
Please state the state and local government so I can advice you more

Pls buy the sumo pump by yourself or you tell them to buy lorentz or astral (1.5hp). They are more durable but more expensive.
Thanks for this, it actually skipped my memory to ask for advice on this.

Was told Grundfos is the best but it is too expensive.

But is 1.5hp submersible pump not too small in capacity for a depth of 160 meters?

0.75hp n above is better

For a 160 m borehole, a 0.5 HP pump is too small

Good luck.
Then that means what the surveyor said about 160m on both points is not correct as I feared.

Because at Point 6, it is orange at 160 meters .

geosegun:
I guess this this is a basement terrain? The actual depth should be 170m to180m. The geophyscist wants to save you some money. Hence the recommended 160m.

The aquifer at about (~100m) is called perched aquifer. It is also good if you don't expect heavy water use. You should be fine with normal domestic use but the water may sometimes be be available to other tenants and neighbours and the surroudings? The yield, may reduce rapidly if used constanly or may reduce drastically during the dry season.

The water at 180m is the main aquifer and never get to dry and the yield remains constant irrespective of use. If you don't want issues due to water yield and quality in future, ensure the water depth reaches about 180m. This would ensure excellent water quality, high yield consistencies and borehole stability for now and in future.

I would recommend drilling up to at leadt 170m for excellent water yield, quality and your peace of mind which is more important.
Thank you very much for this.

Also, I am having concern about the distance away from the soak-away, is 10 meters OK?

Also, what is the current price that should be reasonable for punching at that depth. I am thinking of supplying the casing myself.

Also, for casing, what Diameter, Thickness, and Pressure (Bar) rating should I use?

Should I use a higher Bar down and continue with a lesser one towards the top?

I have a similar issue with u. I was given same depth of 160m on the borehole I wanted to do on my farm. So I looked at the village and I found out most of the water source there are well. I was foolish not to consider some factors like land terrain, distance of existing well to my own farm, challenges they faced while digging their well. I never asked those questions and I proceeded to digging a well. Well, I was a little lucky but it was when I started I found out there were lots of abandoned wells in the area due to the fact that they couldn't easily get water or they met rock at the bottom. Eventually I spent more than half of what I should have spent on borehole yet I couldn't get enough water as I eventually hit rock a d breaking it was a Herculean task as the options presented were not feasible for safe.

So I'd advise.... Go with the flow, when they want to dig ensure u are there with them.... So u and the contractor should keep measuring the depth they've gone together. So like you thought it might not be up to the 160m. So since it's charged per meter, you'll eventually pay the depth dug.... However have the maximum amount for the 160m. But eventually you might get good amount water before then. But prepare for 160m.
Thanks alot.

That is what I will do if me buying the materials and just paying for punching doesn't seam feasible at the end.

The person was telling me 14,000 naira per meter for just puncturing, which doesn't add up because the quote he gave was 17,000 per meter where he will be the one to provide the 8-bar casing.

I am thinking puncturing should be way way less.

Thank you.
