Nonye Soludo wants women to take center stage in the fight for gender equality. by Otutubuike(op): 3:48am On Mar 08
08/03/ 2026. WOMEN'S DAY

The wife of the Anambra State Governor, Mrs Nonye Soludo, has called on Nigerian women to take center stage in the fight for gender equality and empowerment, urging greater participation in politics and decision-making processes.

In an official press statement to mark the 2026 International Women's Day, themed "Empower Her, Elevate All," Mrs Soludo emphasized that women must move from the sidelines to the forefront to drive meaningful change.

She noted that despite years of discussions, seminars, protests, and pleas, progress on women's issues remains limited due to partisan approaches.

The wife of the governor stressed that everyone, particularly women themselves, must lead the crusade for their rightful place in society highlighting the low number of women in politics and urging those passionate about governance to step forward boldly as changemakers.

She commended the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for proposing mandatory seats for women in the National Assembly, describing it as a model for fair representation even as she appealed for similar provisions at the State Houses of Assembly to ensure tangible impact.

The Anambra First Lady highlighted the Soludo administration's achievements for women and girls, including truly-free education from primary to secondary levels, free antenatal care and delivery services, free cervical cancer screening that reached over 10,000 women, a dedicated magistrate court for gender-based violence cases, recruitment of over 8,000 teachers with a significant proportion of women, and competitive platforms for career growth in the civil service.

She also spotlighted her NGO, Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo, which promotes health priorities among women, building an army of changemakers through workouts, community programs, and empowerment initiatives, including the recent support for 25 women.

Mrs Soludo described womanhood as a blessing of exceptional intelligence, energy, and grace, urging women to fight for their gender and society and called for practical actions beyond advocacy to combat harassment, abuse, exploitation, discrimination, and cultural injustices, noting that empowering one woman empowers a generation.

Gender equality means that the rights, responsibilities and opportunities of individuals will not depend on whether they are male or female, handicapped or able bodied, young or elderly, white or black, or from rural or urban settings. Women are entitled to live in dignity, safety and security.
I think there is a big mistake here when women use gender equality to fight for what they want. Just say we want this or we need this because we are women, we are human. Anytime men hear gender equality, what is on their mind is that a man = a woman and they will just laugh it away.

I also want women in Africa to study their history. They blame patriarchy for a lot of things but Fela once said how Animal go give me human rights? Many African women don't know that they had more rights than the oyinbo women before they came with colonization. They colonized your brains to say you are oppressed and your men are depressing you while they were raising their own queen like she's a gift of the world, praying for her everyday for God to save her. Fela should know because if you know what his mom did for Nigeria, you will understand that gender equality is not your trauma, it's oyinbo trauma dem carry on una head to fight their own agenda. They turned you women to employees of the workforce and you are no longer boss lady like your grandmas were. Now, you are now fighting for rights in the workplace that those same people never wanted you in and they are blaming patriarchy 🤡
Industrious women back then did not need to be CEO of one company to be rich. Yes, I use rich this time. They were not collecting salaries. They were making their own money and that's why the British wanted to tax them. And that's why everytime there were riots, it was your mothers fighting them because our men did not tax them the way the British administration wanted to.

They took your power away from you, they took your entrepreneurship away from you to come work in their own companies, then you realise that you have to fight for your menstrual cycle, your maternity leave, your right to pick up your child, your time to take care of family, your time to work from home or flexible options, your right to progress in life. You sold yourselves. Boss lady

There's nothing like gender equality.

I believe in gender equity, not equality

Even two men are not equal

Gender equality... Do women really need gender equality?

Honestly, there is no sure thing like gender equality. Male and Female can't be equal. We are unique in our own ways
