NIGERIAN ARMY ACQUIRES 15 VANQUISHER LIGHT APCs; COAS REAFFIRMS SUPPORT FOR INDIGENOUS MILITARY INNOVATION

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shuaibu, has reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s relentless commitment to advancing indigenous defence technology as a strategic pathway to enhancing operational effectiveness and countering insurgency.

This commitment was demonstrated on 4 March 2026 with the formal handover of 15 locally produced Vanquisher Light Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) to the Nigerian Army. The platforms were manufactured by the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) in collaboration with Vanquish Industries Limited and the Command Engineering Depot.

The COAS represented at the event by the Chief of Policy and Plans (Army), Major General Bamidele Alabi described the event as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s quest for self-reliance in military hardware production.

The COAS emphasized that indigenous defence innovation remains critical to achieving combat readiness and operational superiority, particularly within Nigeria’s unique security environment. He noted that platforms such as the Vanquisher Light APC are specifically designed to address the nation’s operational challenges while strengthening the Army’s capacity to respond effectively to evolving threats.

Lieutenant General Shuaibu further highlighted that local production of military equipment will significantly reduce capital flight, stimulate the national economy and reposition the Armed Forces of Nigeria toward greater self-sufficiency. He described the ceremony as the first of many milestones in the Army’s sustained drive to promote homegrown military technology and innovation.

The COAS encouraged DICON to sustain its momentum in research, development, and the production of high-quality military hardware that meets global standards.

Speaking at the event, the Director-General of DICON Major General BI Alaya expressed profound appreciation to the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his steadfast support and confidence in DICON as the cornerstone of Nigeria’s military-industrial advancement. He also commended the COAS for his consistent backing, which he noted was instrumental in bringing the project to fruition.

The Director-General further urged heads of security agencies and sister services to emulate the Nigerian Army by prioritizing and patronizing indigenous defence products in order to accelerate the nation’s military-industrial growth.

Troops of 3 Division liberate Mansur Village, Alkaleri LGA in Operation BUGUN KARKANDA III

Troops of 3 Division Nigerian Army have successfully liberated Mansur Village and surrounding settlements in Alkaleri Local Government Area of Bauchi State as part of the ongoing Operation BUGUN KARKANDA III.

The operation, led by Major General Folusho Oyinlola, General Officer Commanding 3 Division and Commander of Operation ENDURING PEACE, targeted armed terrorists and criminal elements terrorising the local communities.

According to military sources, troops executed a coordinated offensive on identified flashpoints, dislodging terrorists who had attempted to seize control of Mansur Village. An AK-47 rifle was recovered during clearance operations, degrading the operational capacity of the insurgents.

Following the offensive, troops consolidated their positions and conducted patrols across Alkaleri LGA to maintain security and restore normalcy. Residents have reportedly begun resuming socio-economic activities in the area.

Military intelligence indicates that cross-border terrorist gangs operate within Plateau, Bauchi, and Taraba States, exploiting local terrains and engaging in fluid movement patterns to evade security forces.

The insurgents are reported to include high-value targets such as Mallam Lehi, Mai-Kunkuru, and Mallam Azuge, who operate in the Wase/Kanam forests and Jejin Madam axis.

The General Officer Commanding urged troops to maintain vigilance, stressing the importance of denying terrorists freedom of action while ensuring civilian protection.

Operation BUGUN KARKANDA III is part of the Nigerian Army’s ongoing efforts to dominate insurgent corridors and restore peace and security in North East and North Central Nigeria.

THEATRE COMMANDER OPHK PAYS TRIBUTE TO FALLEN HEROES, VOWS THEIR SACRIFICES WILL NOT BE IN VAIN

The Theatre Commander, Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, on Friday paid tribute to gallant officers and soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty. The solemn burial ceremony took place at the Maimalari Military Cantonment Cemetery in Maiduguri, Borno State.
Speaking during the ceremony, Major General Abubakar described the occasion as a painful reminder of the true cost of military service.

“In the profession of arms, there are moments of victory that fill us with pride and affirm the strength, courage and unity that define our service. Yet there are also solemn moments that weigh heavily on our hearts and remind us of the true cost of service, as we have witnessed today,” he said.

Major General Abubakar said the fallen troops demonstrated courage, selflessness and unwavering dedication to duty, noting that their sacrifices were not only losses to their families but also to the theatre, the Nigerian Army, the Armed Forces of Nigeria and the entire nation.

According to him, they gave their lives in devotion to a cause greater than themselves – the nation, the people and the ideals they swore to defend. They were brave, loyal and courageous patriots whose sacrifices will never be forgotten.

The Theatre Commander added that the troops fought with valour and upheld the finest traditions of the Nigerian Army and the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

They endured hardship so that our flag would continue to fly high. Their sacrifices remind us that freedom is not free; it is secured by the steadfast resolve of patriots willing to place duty above self,” he stated.

Major General Abubakar assured the families of the fallen soldiers that their sacrifices would not be in vain, adding that all entitlements due to the deceased personnel would be processed promptly to support their families.

He also extended condolences on behalf of the Chief of Defence Staff, the Chief of Army Staff and the Armed Forces of Nigeria to the families of the fallen heroes.

Also speaking, the Governor of Borno State, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, represented by the Executive Secretary of the Borno State Security Trust Fund, Alhaji Mustapha Ali Yabe, expressed condolences to the Armed Forces of Nigeria and Operation HADIN KAI.

He described the deaths of the soldiers as a painful loss to the nation and commended the troops for their gallantry, resilience and commitment to safeguarding the state.

Professor Zulum assured that the Borno State Government would continue to support the families of the fallen heroes and the military in the discharge of its constitutional responsibilities.

The ceremony was attended by top government officials from Borno State, senior military officers from the Headquarters Theatre Command and 7 Division Nigerian Army, the Commander of 25 Task Force Brigade, the Chairman of Damboa Local Government Area, as well as families and next of kin of the deceased personnel.

CAS ADVANCES GLOBAL DEFENCE DIPLOMACY AND CAPACITY BUILDING DURING STRATEGIC VISIT TO CZECH REPUBLIC

The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, reinforced the Nigerian Air Force’s (NAF) commitment to modernisation, self-reliance and strategic global partnerships during an official visit to the Czech Republic from 23–24 February 2026. The visit underscored his deliberate drive to leverage international collaboration in strengthening training, sustainment and operational capability development in response to contemporary security realities. It further highlighted the NAF’s growing profile as a forward-looking and professionally adaptive air force focused on long-term institutional capacity.

During engagements with Aero Vodochody Aerospace, the CAS reaffirmed the enduring partnership supporting the overhaul and upgrade of the L-39ZA aircraft, which continues to enhance pilot training and operational proficiency. Discussions also centred on the NAF’s structured transition to the more advanced L-39 Skyfox platform, ensuring alignment of training systems with modern warfare dynamics while maintaining continuity in pilot development. High-level talks with the Czech Air Force expanded cooperation in training, simulator capacity development and logistics collaboration across rotary- and fixed-wing operations, reflecting a shared commitment to professional excellence and capability enhancement

Additional engagements with defence industry stakeholders provided valuable insights into advanced simulators, parachute training systems, unmanned aerial technologies and other emerging solutions critical to modern air power. Emphasising that contemporary defence partnerships must extend beyond acquisition to knowledge exchange and technology transfer, the CAS reiterated that sustainable modernisation requires innovation and local capacity development. The visit therefore delivered strategic momentum towards his Command Philosophy of leveraging innovation, emerging technologies and international partnerships to build a resilient, mission-focused and globally engaged Nigerian Air Force.

CAS SEEKS STRATEGIC TRAINING PARTNERSHIP IN LATVIA TO ADVANCE NAF PILOT DEVELOPMENT AND OPERATIONAL CAPABILITY

As part of ongoing efforts to enhance the operational capacity of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, visited the Baltic Bees Training Facility in Riga, Latvia on 26 February 2026. The visit was aimed at assessing the facility’s capability to conduct standardised jet flying training on the L-39 aircraft for prospective NAF pilots. The engagement underscores the Nigerian Air Force’s commitment to strengthening the quality and standardisation of its pilot training programmes in line with global best practices in military aviation, while also representing a proactive step toward preparing NAF pilots for the expected induction of new platforms into the Service’s inventory.

During the visit, Air Marshal Aneke explored potential areas of collaboration with the Baltic Bees Training organisation to support the development of mission-focused pilot training and enhance the technical proficiency of NAF aviators. The initiative is also designed to support the long-term objective of strengthening the Nigerian Air Force’s capacity to conduct advanced jet training locally, thereby consolidating institutional expertise and improving the overall effectiveness of its air operations as the Service continues to modernise its fleet and expand its operational capabilities.

The visit aligns with the command philosophy of the Chief of the Air Staff, which prioritises deliberate capacity development, mission-oriented training and the continuous professional advancement of personnel to enhance operational readiness. It also supports the broader mandate of the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to strengthen national security and create a stable environment for economic growth and national development. Through such strategic international engagements, the Nigerian Air Force continues to expand its operational capabilities and reinforce its role in safeguarding Nigeria’s sovereignty and security.

IS-Sahel insurgents attack Tahoua airport hosting the Nigerien Air Force’s Bayraktar TB2 drone fleet

Suspected fighters of the Islamic State in the Sahel (IS-Sahel) launched an attack on Tahoua Airport in western Niger early Monday, targeting a military air base hosting the Nigerien Air Force’s Bayraktar TB2 drone fleet.

Security sources told Zagazola Makama that the insurgents struck the facility in the early hours of Monday at about 1:30 am, triggering exchanges of gunfire around the air base located in Tahoua region.

The air base is considered a strategic installation for Niger’s counterterrorism operations, as it hosts the Turkish-made Bayraktar TB2 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) used for surveillance and precision strikes against insurgent groups across the Sahel.

Details of the attack, including casualties or the extent of damage to military assets, were still unclear at the time of filing this report.

The incident comes less than two months after a similar assault by suspected IS-Sahel militants on a military air base in Niamey.

Such attacks reflect a shift in tactics by jihadist groups in the Sahel, increasingly focusing on strategic facilities including airports, military bases and drone installations.

More questions than answers:

- Are our FOBs undermanned? If they are, how come we have such large stocks of ammunition and material at such undermanned bases, just waiting to be seized by ISWAP?
- If they are well manned, then we must ask if they are fighting right? Because they seem to retreat in disarray, rather than in an organized manner. Because they should actually destroy any vehicles that cannot be taken away rather than let them fall into enemy hands
- Also, we need to ask if some of these FOBs are even militarily tenable? If they cannot be defended feasibly, then we must retreat with all our material once there is a warning of upcoming attack by overwhelming forces, rather than wasting lives and resources defending positions that are not defensible from the beginning.

Lots of food for thought.

Corruption seems to be the Nigerian cop out. I disagree.

Corruption can mar doctrine, yes but not always. NA bureaucracy is still military-era thick.

Look at the last video for example. Does the cache look like a weapons problem? Does it look like a mobility problem?

This thing is incompatible doctrine and both internal and external forces committed to the status quo as Barlow described a decade ago.
