'The King of the Beautiful game, Florentino Perez, Real Madrid President turns 79 today, International Women's Day 2026. Football is universally known as the Beautiful Game because of it's passion, it's unpredictability, drama and artistic skill that transcends language and culture. It is a unifying force.

Today, I pay tribute to an extraordinary individual who gave me a great deal of inspiration during my tenure as Nigeria's Ambassador to Spain.

Our Embassy in Madrid, Spain, is a stone throw from the Bernabeu Stadium, home of the Real Madrid Football Club, and some of my most memorable moments watching spectacular football matches were spent there in the VIP booth courtesy of Mr Florentino Perez. This was where I met the iconic Ronaldo for the very first time.

Today, IWD'26, I equally celebrate a man who appreciates the impact and momentum women bring to the beautiful game, and who has helped the women's football movement grow in leaps and bounds.

Florentino Perez is the primary architect behind the creation of Real Madrid Femenino, a Female Football Team, through the 2020 merger with CD Tacón. As president, he oversees this project, inspiring a new generation of girls and women to embrace the fact that this Beautiful Game is inclusive, and belongs to all of us!'
