It is not so much about the price, it is the purchasing power. How many people can afford the N1,080 then?
Re: A Litre Of Fuel Today Would Buy This Peugeot Car In 1977 by Anonimoux: 4:16pm On Mar 09
That ₦1,000 was like ₦10 Million then, nothing changed.

This is how pathetic Nigeria has become.

I'm short of words, Honestly.
Pathetic Nigeria has become how?

Is that how easy that amount was to get back then?
Unfortunately the internet has given room for economic illiterates like the OP to thrive.

In 1977 Exchange Rate: $1 = ₦0.647
So, NGN1,080 = $1,669.24 in 1977.
How much is $1 today? Multiply by $1,669.24 = NGN2,253,477.59
This is how much that car is worth today, not the cost of fuel.
Do you undersstand?
I'm short of words, Honestly.

How can fueling the full tank of a vehicle be more expensive than some people's monthly salaries in a country. And people say fuel is cheaper in Nigeria than USA and Canada because of exchange rate. Nigerians are really not that intelligent.

I don't know how to make y'all understand that Nigeria is the most expensive country in the world
U are the one not intelligent here because if u are u should have understand logically that since independence 1960 so u want to tell me all d president till date no one can't turn Nigeria to America 🥴🤔🤔🤔🤔

That's when u will understand that u always see it from afar but in reality is not what u think...

Yes ask neighboring countries including developed county Nigeria is still a country that u will leave with peace of mind without monthly bills for tax, light, parking, insurance etc so what are u talking about ..

Please verify before u quote me or else I won't reply u

Ok so during obj a car cost N1,800 or doing Gej a car cost N1,800?

Pls blame Nigeria Citizen they are the worst citizen of any country in the world. Even a pepper farmer will hike pepper price I mean pepper he or she planted on his/her backyard and if you ask why, he or she will tell you don't you hear petrol is cost in Iran?
Thank u for saying the truth my brother ..

That's why buhari said change starts from me and you because the citizens are more worst than d government itself ..

But citizens won't or don't like to hear this truth because u didn't support their opinions..😔😔😔😔😔

1,080 naira in 1977 adjusted under inflation would be like 3 million naira today.

Over reliance on petrol without focusing on other means of production is a major cause of widening inflation in our country.

So was a car costing 1080 in 2013, or 2009?

(APC is a terrible party, but they were not in charge after 1977 by the way)
Thank you for this intelligent question my brother

Why won’t the pepper farmer hike the price of his product?

Will he use pepper for all his transactions?

Won’t he go out? If he has his own vehicle, won’t he buy fuel? If he doesn’t have a vehicle, won’t he pay public transportation?

The public transport he’ll enter will definitely hike its fare because of the sharp hike in petroleum price.

The pepper seller will buy garri, beans, pay his child’s fees and transport fare.

All he has to earn from is his pepper farm. He has no option than to hike the cost he sells his pepper for.

You all need to stop blaming the citizens for problems created by the useless people we have as leaders.

This comparison is rhetorically powerful but technically flawed if used as a direct measure of value.

There was also freebies from government to make life easy. Sometimes I wish the whites stayed longer in Nigeria. Nigeria independence should've been 2020.

Nigeria is a crime scene.
Freebies were for people working for government, not for everyone. The vast majority of people then lived in poverty. And even then, the government could afford it because at the time the number of people working for government was not as high as it is now.

Shame on the old generation. People of 60 years and above.
THEY ARE VERY RECKLESS AND DESTRUCTIVE GENERATION IN THIS COUNTRY.

THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL THE DESTRUCTIONS AND STATE OF THE COUNTRY.

During their Younger age, they met alot of things working and functional, but they destroyed everything.

Shame
I’m glad there’s someone seeing how reckless these so called older generations are.

They enjoyed a lot of things from the government and purposely destroyed those things they enjoyed for the younger generation. Yet they call the younger generation they do absolutely nothing for “entitled” and “lazy”.

Go read about multiplier effects. The pepper farmer does not plant all they consume. They buy things, too.

All within a generation.....not some thousands of years ago. Just 48 years ago. Meaning that there are many Nigerians still alive that bought both the car and now the fuel for exactly the same price.

If there is any other definition of falling off a cliff, tell me.
Exactly... My father bought his first car (Peugeot) in 1978. Today, he drives a Corolla and will buy fuel tomorrow to go to court.

Paying subsidies for 50 years is part of why we have the problems we have today. Some of us saw the light in 2012, but most of you did not.

Fuel is still cheaper in nigeria...compared to other African countries self.
Re: A Litre Of Fuel Today Would Buy This Peugeot Car In 1977 by agentarcher(m): 4:32pm On Mar 09
Why is that some Nigerians judge Nigeria inflation like it's an isolated thing? What country can purchase the same things their currency could in the 1900s in 2020s? Inflation is a global thing. No car company will sell a vehicle to you with the same marketing strategies as they did in the past. And the funny thing is despite the inflation people still buy the latest vehicles.
