Earlier today, I had an interesting conversation with a friend who had always been strongly critical of Bola Ahmed Tinubu. To my surprise, he initiated the discussion and began highlighting what he now sees as the President’s achievements. This is someone I had previously struggled to convince about the necessity of Tinubu’s reforms, so hearing him speak that way was quite striking.
I remarked during our conversation that if it took about twenty-five years for Lee Kuan Yew to transform Singapore into the success story it is today, then meaningful reforms in Nigeria will naturally take time as well.
While continuity can help consolidate such reforms, I also believe it should not become a precedent that weakens democratic norms.
