WHO Fears Health System Collapse As Iran Death Toll Hits 1,800 by Darlingtina16(op): 12:45am On Mar 13
The World Health Organisation has raised a fresh alarm over the catastrophic humanitarian toll of the ongoing military offensive by the United States and Israel against Iran, revealing that over 1,800 people have been killed and 12,500 others injured in less than two weeks.

WHO Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus, in a statement shared on his X handle on Wednesday, warned that health systems across the Middle East are under “immense strain” and on the verge of total collapse.

The conflict, which escalated sharply on February 28, 2026, following a massive joint US-Israeli strike that killed Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei and other top officials, has displaced hundreds of thousands of civilians.

According to the World Health Organisation chief, the reported toll from the conflict shows that Iran has suffered more than 1,300 deaths and about 9,000 injuries, Lebanon recorded at least 570 deaths and around 1,400 injuries, and Israel has seen 15 deaths and approximately 2,142 injuries.

The displacement crisis is equally dire, with over 100,000 Iranians and up to 700,000 Lebanese citizens forced to flee their homes.

Many are now living in deteriorating conditions with limited access to clean water and sanitation, raising fears of a massive disease outbreak among women and children.

Tedros noted that healthcare infrastructure is increasingly becoming a target in the theatre of war.

Since the start of the offensive, the WHO has documented 25 attacks on health facilities in Lebanon, 18 attacks in Iran and two attacks in Israel.

“These attacks not only claim lives but also deprive communities of critical care when they need it most,” the WHO chief stressed, calling on all parties to respect international law and protect civilians.

The war began after the White House justified its strikes on major Iranian cities, including Tehran, by citing “alleged” missile and nuclear threats.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has since launched retaliatory strikes targeting Israeli sites and U.S. military bases in Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.

Despite the White House’s claims of a “precision” operation, the WHO reports suggest indiscriminate impact on the region’s most vulnerable populations.

“The urgency for action is critical to prevent the collapse of already fragile health systems,” the UN chief warned, as he called for unimpeded humanitarian access and immediate de-escalation.

Ghebreyesus also criticised the scale of global military spending, warning that the world’s priorities remain misaligned as millions continue to face hunger.

Ghebreyesus, in another post on X, said global military expenditure reached $2.7tn in a single year, a figure he contrasted with estimates from the United Nations on the amount required to end hunger worldwide.

He stated that, according to UN estimates, about $93bn annually would be needed to eliminate global hunger by 2030.

The WHO chief noted that the comparison shows the world spends almost 30 times more on military activities than on ensuring that everyone has enough food to eat.

“Global military expenditure just hit $2.7 trillion — in a single year.

“According to @UN estimates, ending world hunger by 2030 would require $93 billion annually. That means we spend almost 30 times more every year on killing each other than on making sure everyone eats. Numbers don’t lie. Our priorities do.”

He stressed that the disparity highlighted a global failure to adequately address one of the most pressing humanitarian challenges.

His remarks come amid rising defence budgets across several countries, driven by growing geopolitical tensions and conflicts in different regions of the world.

The United Nations has repeatedly warned that hunger and food insecurity remain widespread, with millions of people facing acute shortages due to conflict, climate change, economic instability and displacement.

Global leaders pledged under the UN Sustainable Development Goals to end hunger by 2030, but experts say achieving the target will require stronger political commitment and increased financial investment in food security programmes.

Isreali are also displaced, across the Northern border , villages in Isreal along with Lebanese borders. Displacement is normal in war, but it does not gauge victory in war. People get displaced in other to save their lives. Also 3.2 million Iranians are not displaced, that is a bloody lie .

Yèyé UN controlled agency.
They'll report anything US tells them to say
Have they entered Israel to comment about their own humanitarian crisis? Of course they won't. ISREAL won't even allow them enter.
That's the selective news reporting we keep seeing and hearing. From this stupid one sided report now.. one would normally infer that Iran is devasted and Israel is in pristine condition.
Open your eyes people.
