Former media aide to ex-Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Laolu Akande, has urged the African Democratic Congress, ADC, to “push forward” experienced southern politicians like Rotimi Amaechi and Peter Obi as presidential candidates.

Akande said Amaechi and Obi are Southern candidates capable of challenging President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections.

He spoke on Friday during an appearance on Sunrise Daily, a programme on Channels Television.

Akande said credible and experienced leaders from the South should be positioned if opposition parties are serious about mounting a strong challenge.

“If they were serious, people like Rotimi Amaechi, people like Peter Obi ought to be the ones to be pushed forward,” he said.

He highlighted Amaechi’s long career in public service, noting his experience across several levels of government.

“Look at Amaechi. Amaechi has been a speaker, he’s been a governor, he’s been a minister. He was second in the APC,” Akande said.

“Tremendous career in politics, opportunities in service. And he was the guy that was in charge of infrastructure development.”

According to him, the opposition needs a southern candidate with strong governance credentials who can stand “head-to-head against President Tinubu.”

Akande also warned that without a strong alternative candidate, former vice president Atiku Abubakar could continue to dominate opposition politics ahead of the next election.

“As things stand now, if you keep on getting the vibes that Atiku wants to do it by his means, he will probably be able to forge his way through by some means, because he seems to be the strongest politician in the party. The shadows of Atiku are still hanging heavily,” he said.

How is Obi and Amaechi experienced? They were presidents before? Aside the fact that they were former governors just like Tinubu himself?

Lastly, can we compare the development in Lagos to what is being managed in both Anambra of Obi and Rivers of Amaechi?

Laolu is inadvertently suggesting that the opposition should field a lightweight candidate so that Asiwaju can have a smooth ride to a second term. Let me say this clearly: regardless of who comes up against President Tinubu in 2027, that person will get a bloody nose. All the odds are in Asiwaju’s favour.

Atiku’s moment was in 2007, but Obasanjo ensured it never happened. Obi’s best chance was in 2023, but Atiku truncated it. As for Amaechi, he does not have a viable path to winning on a national stage. In fact, Wike will perform better than him anywhere in Nigeria, including the North.

Ameachi has no national spread for now he is just building up his political pedigree.Obi is better positioned to beat Emilokan if there is a level plain field but the rejection of realtime e-transmission of electoral results by APC government is already a groundwork for impending rigging.

They should all forge a common front. Thats the only way the party will stand a chance. Personal tendecies will split the unity and defeat the aim of mounting a virile opposition and reduce their chances of performing well at the poll

The only person that may stand a chance against Tinubu is Atiku provided he is paired with Peter Obi as President and Vice President candidates against Tinubu.

Peter Obi on his own is paper weight, in fact Peter Obi's performance will be poorer than it was in the last election of 2023, while Amaechi will be a disaster in the polls, I don't think he will secure high votes across geopolitical regions. Even in Rivers State, Amaechi may not win.

Going by the security situations of Nigerian presently we need a change in the government. It is obvious that tinubu has nothing to offer. The greatest mistake Nigerians will make is to allow him to go back. His hands are tied, and there is no way he can do better if he goes back. He is a stooge to the fulanis. Even the most clueless person in the world cannot fold his hands when people are killed like fowls under his watch. To worsen the situation, obas and the rich from Yoruba are being killed on daily basis by the fulanus, and he can't even condemn it. What then is the fate of a common man in Nigeria?

OP thank you for this Post of yours. I will comment in it regularly. It is extremely crucial for alot of people to read. We seem to be making a mistake. We seem to calculate who is going to win. We need to focus on who do we want as president.

All I see is this calculation on who will win who has more popularity who has more spread. That is not politics that is not just political observation.

Whose team are you on.

Let me use football which we all understand. I'm a real Madrid fan and I want real Madrid to win every single champions league which is not realistic, but I am a real Madrid fan and I want them to win. Now I am also a Victor Osimhen fan. If Galatasaray met Real Madrid I want Galatasaray to lift the champions league.
The mistake people who have no love for politics make is choosing who they think will win over who they love if they even have the capacity to love.

We love to criticize women for looking for wealthy men who are considered winners and avoiding strugglers. Is it not the same thing most men do with politics in this forum ? They are making so many calculations and permutations about who is champion and who is paper weight. If you judge women and say they don't have a heart, look at all the men who will not vote with their heart.

In life You don't look for a winners you look for who has a winner mindset. I'm a Victor Osimhen fan till eternity and beyond he does not need to play in English league to impress me. If he comes to play in local league I will support any team he is on. Win or Lose, I ride with him. Osaze Odemwingie Forever, I never forget you.

Being governor of Lagos successfully is like ruling mini-nigeria. Tinubu's clout before he became president was immense. Obi and Amechi don't have such. They can't carry the weight of Nigeria. Forget chochocho. Atiku even with his short comings and northern domination entitlement is far ahead of Obi and Amechi in terms of capacity. The weight of managing Nigeria is immense - economy, tribal, religion, security, corruption, foreign interests, class interests etc.

Some of the above are not common in many countries. For example many countries don't have tribal and religious issues. These are two major ropes holding Nigeria.
