Moments ago, at my direction, the United States Central Command executed one of the most powerful bombing raids in the History of the Middle East, and totally obliterated every MILITARY target in Iran’s crown jewel, Kharg Island.

Our Weapons are the most powerful and sophisticated that the World has ever known but, for reasons of decency, I have chosen NOT to wipe out the Oil Infrastructure on the Island.

However, should Iran, or anyone else, do anything to interfere with the Free and Safe Passage of Ships through the Strait of Hormuz, I will immediately reconsider this decision. US attacks military sites on Iran’s Kharg island, home to vast oil facility

United States President Donald Trump has said the country’s military bombed military installations on Iran’s Kharg island, warning the area’s critical oil facilities could be next if Iran continues to block the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran, in turn, threatened on Saturday to reduce US-linked oil facilities to “a pile of ashes” if oil structures on the island were attacked, as the US-Israel war on Iran, now in its punishing third week, spilled over into a global oil price crisis already in the making.

Why has the US targeted Iran's Kharg Island?

Donald Trump has said the US military has bombed a small island off the coast of Iran - home to a major oil terminal that is considered the country's economic lifeline.

The US president said Kharg Island's military facilities were "totally obliterated" but that it had held off targeting its oil infrastructure.

Trump, however, warned that he would reconsider the decision not to target oil facilities on the island should Iran or others "do anything to interfere" with the safe passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz - one of the world's most important shipping channels, located south of Iran's coast.

Iran's military said oil and energy infrastructure belonging to firms working with the US would "immediately be destroyed" should Kharg's oil infrastructure be attacked.

Why is Kharg Island important to Iran?

Kharg Island is a small rocky outcrop just 15 nautical miles (24km) off the coast of Iran.

Despite its size, it is one of the most critical pieces of Iran's energy infrastructure.

The US striking this small but vital island in the northern Gulf is like going for Iran's economic jugular vein.

Ninety percent of Iran's crude oil comes through a terminal on the island - transported through pipes from the mainland.

The tankers then come back down the Gulf and out of the Strait of Hormuz, to China - the main buyer of Iranian oil.

A terminal for the export of Iranian oil, the island provides a major source of revenue for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

Terrorists apologist. It true. Trump was merciful to them by not bombing their critical oil and gas infrastructure which is besides the military base. He told them he will reconsider that decision if they continue to obstruct movement in the Strait of Hormuz. That place is home to 90 percent of Iran's oil export.
