If anyone likes, let him or her kick against the OP.

Such can go and teach in Nigerian private school

For someone like me that did a fair job of teaching and going far to see my learners excel without cheating, I know it's a slavery and pathway to penury. I got grey hair even when my elders havnt gotten a single strand. Na forget o

If you find your way there, let it be for a session. Do your best to find a trade. It pays better in Nigeria now

But if the govt is able to reform the policies binding private schools welfare, it could become advisable to go in if one has the passion
I have already asked one here who countered me to make sure that all his family members find their way into teaching positions in private schools. Let him do that, then he can come back to counter me.

I got frustrated while teaching in private schools for years.

I would trek to and back from sch everyday, I was a chronic debtor, my landlord Wahala, parents of my students, family pressure, etc . All these made me start developing grey hair at a very young age

I realized about this post, The OP was just sacked or be insulted by the school owner.. all i read is not true
What's not true there?

Everything he stated is 100% correct, I have friends that have taught/teaching in private schools...... They have experienced all the nonsense listed there and even more. Majority of Nigerian employers are heartless, you're always at their mercy because of peanut they pay you.

Absolutely! It’s a great argument for why private schools are so appealing. Let's just say, it's a fantastic case for continued investment and a good working environment, don't you think?

And when you finish discouraging them about private school jobs who do you want to be teaching your kids?

Maybe aliens from mars would come and teach them.

You should be teaching them creative ways of earning as a teacher like doing extra lessons for wealthy families, online teaching jobs that pays in dollars as side hustle.
In my view, @Rapmoney does not appear to be discouraging graduates from teaching in private schools. Instead, he is suggesting that anyone who is teaching in a private school should not remain there for an extended period if they wish to advance in their careers and improve their financial situation.

COMRADES, though, I've never taught in life but some Nairalanders stated here that working/ teaching in Nigerian private schools is modern day slavery. But I don't know the motivation behind this article
Taaaaaaaaaar, U are just shying away from the article cos your selfishness won't let U speak. Private job is another bourgeoisie slavery of the private sector and also the worst of its kind but because U don't want to hear the truth cos U are benefiting from the scheme, hence your pretence of ignorance.

Very deep article. If you are going to teach in a private school as a young graduate, please know how to negotiate with your employer. Don't settle for less. Also, create other streams of income for yourself e g Agriculture and online writing jobs etc. You can also do private home lessons to augment your income. Think widely. Read widely about business ideas. Agriculture is the best bet for a teacher as a side business. You don't have to go to your farm daily. And Agriculture is very wide. Intelligence is vital as a private school teacher. Cheers.

This post is a mirror held up to thousands of Nigerian graduates. Look into it and see your future if you stay.

Private school teaching is not a career. It is a holding cell. You are not building; you are waiting. You are not growing; you are surviving. And survival is not living.

The blackpill knows: The owners will not save you. The parents will not save you. The government will not save you. Only you can save you.

Learn a skill. Any skill. Save every kobo you can. Use your nights and weekends to build an exit. And when you have enough, leave. Do not look back. Do not wait for a farewell party. Just go.

Because 10 years from now, if you are still in that private school, you will be older, more tired, and exactly the same. And the only person to blame will be the one in the mirror
True.

Due to where I find myself as a graduate, I'm a private school teacher earning over 180k monthly, coupled with my private class, all together making it 350k. I left a company job that pays me 70k, Drury Chemical Industry precisely. Today I have a master's degree in process engineering so don't underestimate most teacher they earn modestly

To be honest, schools are profitable business in any country. But countries serious about Education won't rely on private schools to advance it.

If I am ever made a Minister of Education, first thing I'm doing is shutting down any private school with less than 200 pupils. The proprietors should go and learn a trade and leave education business.

Next, all schools should be registered, with strict testing and regulations for students. Don't meet the mark, govt takes over your school and turns it into a public school.

Finally, Public School teachers should be paid handsomely, trained with Foreign staff and made to sign contracts that they stay with the Govt school for 10 years. Then govt schools will be equipped well, any materials they need will be subsidised but private schools will pay full price for it. I'll do my best to deprive private schools of quality teachers and equipment: e.g public libraries, govt kids enter for free, private schools pay admission fee.

I want to slowly dismantle private education, funnel that talent into public education and then drastically improve the curriculum and welfare packages of teaching staff.

There's not much room for growth in private school but at least their staff should see annual salary increase. How can you work for someone for 10 years and you don't earn enough to buy a small car? That's Nigerian culture: Use you until you quit and run

I'm a teacher who teaches in an international school in Lagos. After teaching many years in Nigerian private school, I know that they are hell-bent to destroy their staff. My advice to teachers teaching in Nigerian private schools is to understand themselves first. If you're interested in pursuing q career in education. Then get certified. Get your B. Ed or PGDE and your TrCN. Apply to schools on LinkedIn. Many foreign schools are currently recruiting like Rugby School, Chaterhouse, Wellington etc. They well with HMo, pension Free lunch and opportunity to travel.
As a math, physics, biology teachers, go get your QTS. You can also teach as a special needs teacher. Educational Therapy, behavioral therapy occupational therapy or psychology therapy... These are sought after courses in the world. https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61588566512912

Am learning a skill, the more am knowing it the more my Oga become aggressive and mad.
Any small opportunity.... he will be saying...u said you are a graduate...as if he hasn't seen graduate before.
Am living rent free on his brain right now. Did he expect someone that made a good grade in university to spend the same number of years with people that has never been to school in understanding a skill.
This country is terrible.

Most private schools are set up for max profit, in one sch teachers are to buy special corporate shirt, sport wear, Friday wear every new sessions from the school, lessons note are to be written and submitted in soft copy as well as hard copy. The hard copy must be printed and filed for the school at the expense of the teacher. There is online lesson that the teacher conduct with their personal data. Holidays are not for teachers they must resume and close as normal.

Originalsly:
1.Your progress or your growth is on you ...not the proprietor. If he's interested in your growth it is for his benefit ...not yours.

2. You should figure out your career path and work towards it. As in opening your own school. Keep your creativ ideas to yourself. ..establish a reputation at the school ... so when you're ready to start your own ... it will be easy to lure pupils.

3.If you follow 2 ... 3 cannot happen.

4. The school set the behaviour standard of the pupils. Bad behaviour ... it's on the school. Children are not disciplined because of f ar the parent may pull the child and that would be less money. The bottom line of such chools is money over everything ...number of pupils is all that matter....whether they behave or learn doesn't matter.

5. As a teacher you have a better chance to meet the people you want to meet . Parents are in all walks of life and you can make connections through them. Emeka's father is a Bank manager .. and you want to get into banking ...do you apply for a job like thousands of others?...or you connect through the father?
Reading this thread while trekking to work(school) with no shishi in my pocket. I am currently marking over 400 mathematics scripts.. And next term, i know it would be more than that, reason, they admit pupils/students like water. Its all about the money for the owner.

I worked in private schools years ago, and i left on my own when i saw that teaching in private schools is slavery. Most of you jump into threads to make comments before thinking. Oga, I can conveniently place you on a salary for a whole year, and I would still have enough to invest in my projects.

During the mandatory NYSC year, I was posted to a boarding house up north with no pay and someone like me who was coming from Makoko I had to think faster and find way of making extra bucks, I was friendly in the local assembly where I worship and the clergyman kind of liked me this makes the creating awareness for extra lesson easy for me.

As time goes on, I had two other PPAs where I hustle as a part time teacher and not as a full time classroom teacher, the pay wasn't something to write home about but at least it keep my body and soul together and that was my first and last experience as a school teacher.

Life goes on now.
It is difficult to have extra lesson in some private schools especially one that close by 5pm and still expect you to come on Saturday once in awhile plus the holidays are not really holidays because you are expected in school too. I have seen a school in Osun State where staff are not given Easter breaks. So, where is the time?

private school teaching is modern day slavery, it pays to b home than do it.

I was there for two years n after two years I didn't have 20k to buy a good phone, that was year 2017.

Aside that, I was oweing all the loan apps in Nigeria.

Imagine been paid 35k then n I have to transport myself to work everyday, mind u na me b d highest paid ooo n d most annoying thing is that it won't give u chance to job hunt n think outside d box

I left without looking back n thank God today what I make everyday today is same as what I made as a teacher in 2017.

Note some teachers we taught together then are still in that same school till today

I once taught with church of christ owned secondary school as a graduate. One of the months ,my salary wasnt paid reason been that i only conducted exams and computed results and i didnt teach which was done according to the schools time table. My work load was teaching primary 3 ,junior and senior clases.Together with my cousin we were given toilet tissues ,soap and morping stick with 2k after that session. That was when i realised how much of a deadbeat scenerio i got my self into.Had to immediately return their items when they resumed and quit the job. This school charged 30k for extra lessons per 100 plus students they had and kept us extra hours to teach only to give me 2k...It takes who hasnt worked with this set of people to not know how wicked they can go to protect their selfish interest.

I laugh when I read this post, because what the write has written down is not just truth but fact that the upcoming graduate should know.
I was a teacher in a private school for 8 years, I saw how owners of Private schools will tie teachers down, close the dustiny of young men and women under the name management staff of a private school. They don't want you to be comfortable, because if you are comfortable you can leave so they pay you pinuts, just as the writer pointer out even parents don't want to go so you can built their wards but you no body is building you.
I look back after 8 year what do I achieved is I eat food, and struggle or pay bills.
You must put your feel down and leave if you want to be relevant to yourself and generation to come.
PRIVATE SCHOOL IS NOT A PLACE TO STILL IT HELP YOU RAISE MONEY TO ATTEND INTERVIEW AND SEARCH FOR A BETTER JOB BECAUSE YOU ARE NOT WORKING YOU ARE EXISTING.
