My Nigeria Used Car Wants To Take My Life by Victory662(op): 8:16pm On Mar 15
I recently bought a Toyota Corolla 2005 model, Nigerian used. Since then I've had this constant problem of hard starting. It's not very bad though, it picks after second or third kick, although in some cases it could be worse prompting my battery to run down.

I have explained the issue to about 4 mechanics, each of them telling me what they suspected could be the cause, I paid them and at the end of the day, nothing changed. I've spent over 300k on this very issue.

The only option I'm considering now is that of the latest mechanic that told me it could be fuel pump system pressure or electrical fault or both. I'm just afraid of spending money again because I'm already afraid it may not work.
So NL family, have your car ever had this "spiritual hard starting" problem? And how did u get out of it?

Re: My Nigeria Used Car Wants To Take My Life by McLizbae:
2005 corrolla: that is an easy to fix car, and I am certain that you are not giving the car to the right people, for repairs.

That 300k is far more that enough to fix whatever the issue with that car may be, if you are dealing with the right people.

The right people are experienced toyota Repairers, and they typically ain't hard to find at all.

First of all, that hard starting problem should be checked by a rewire and not a mechanic. A good rewire will diagnose and tell you what the problem is among the following:
1. Bad spark plug/s
2. Bad coil wire/s
3. Malfunctioning nozzle/s
4. Damaged valve/s
5. Weak kick starter.
5. Dieing fuel pump.

Hard starting, it might be from the brainblox,or wrong fuel pump wiring. Open the fuel tank fron inside. Remove the back seat lower, take it off,ud see the small fuel tank enclosure cover, remove it,pry the return inside, slang gently till u disconnect the hose and casing. Look inside the fuel tank, what do u see, look at the casing wiring and check for any modifications or repairs, wrong wiring, loose wiring, check the fuel pump filter, should be goldfish cream or white,if its black dirty and blocked then ud found 1 of the culprits..pls for now don't allow any baztad go to starter, fusebox, brainbox, alternator, battery, etc. Abeg first do what I said and get back to me. So we can take it

Your car issue would have simply be detected using an OBD-II scanner. From there, you resolve the issue headon. Since i discovered this tool, electrician no dey chop my money anyhow.
Please go for proper car scan.
Re: My Nigeria Used Car Wants To Take My Life by EkoErrands: 10:54am On Mar 16
Your fuel pump check valve is bad so it doesnt hold pressure after the ignition is turned on. Since its a corolla, change the complete fuel pump assembly to a brand new fuel pump and see if that solves the problem. The reason I said use new pump is so that you dont fix a used one with the same check valve problem.

Before you change it try cycling your ignition on and off 3 times before starting the engine. If it starts once then know its your fuel pump that is failing to hold pressure at the check valve.

OP should switch to LegSus to avoid paying so much subsidy to Tinubu and APC for the massive corruption in their oil sector.

Problem solved huh cheesy

anonimi:
Petrol should never cost more than N70 per litre, says APC

January 19, 2015

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has described as mere tokenism the reduction of petrol price from N97 to N87 per litre, saying the petroleum product ordinarily should sell for N70.

On Sunday, the federal government announced the reduction of petrol price, citing the fall of global crude oil price.

But the APC through Lai Mohammed, its spokesman, on Monday accused the government of making a show out of deceit, saying “a 10.3 per cent slash in the price of petrol was a mere tokenism at a time the price of crude oil has crashed by about 60 per cent”.

It argued that the pump price of a litre of petrol should not be more than 70 Naira, alleging that at N87 per litre, the government was forcing Nigerians to subsidise the massive corruption in the oil sector by N17 for every litre of fuel.

It won't take a Chinese man or Japanese to figure this but why are black people incapacitated.

First, something controls the fuel injection and another thing controls the combustion. Why is it difficult to figure? Valves too because, without oxygen there will be no combustion. I wish I will see people like you who are tired of a particular fault and sell there car auction

You have one of the best second hand value car you can ever buy from a Nigerian. That car is very wonderful and practically many Mechanics knows how to handle that car very well.

However, you seem so unlucky getting good mechanics.

Anyway, You have several great potential solutions up there by our eligible Nairalander experienced car owners. However, get OB2 and scan the probable error in your car system. It might even be an engine timing problem which if set properly, wouldn't cause much at all.....follow up by using OBD2 first..........

I am not a mechanic, but I have had experiences from using different cars.
Your problem with the car is likely your fuel pump hasn't got enough power to pump your fuel to the engine. Change the fuel pump with an original pump.

OR alternatively, it could that ow fuel in your tank makes it difficult to pump enough surge to your engine to start. The fuel pump Mal functions due to high temperature as there is not enough fuel in your tank to cool the fuel pump and make it function well. Try having enough fuel in your tank ( always above quarter tank).
Re: My Nigeria Used Car Wants To Take My Life by dayo8080(m): 1:10pm On Mar 16
This shouldn't be difficult to fix. Take it to Ladipo market. Try to locate any good mech around and get the parts e.g kick starter, tell the seller to make complete payment if his product fixes the issue

"Spiritual hard starting" ...lol.
There is nothing spiritual here, man. A bad fuel pump can cause that shit too. You didn't tell us what exactly you did that amounted to the 300k, so I'm restricted to offer any other advice really. However, the ignition coils and plugs can be culpable sometimes. If the previous owner has removed the engine coolant thermostat prior, please replace it asap. Some Nigerian mechanics can offer very bad advice sometimes. If you notice overheating, look at the fans and radiator performance.

Just got this fixed in my corolla, the issue came from some wiring. Maybe security of the car. It didn't solve after changing fuel Pump but the rewire disconnected some wire and it picked once.

Check these 6 things:
1. Weak fuel pump
2. Dirty MAF sensor (Air Flow Meter sensor)
3. Old/Bad spark plugs
4. Bad Coil
5. Faulty Crankshaft Position Sensor
6. Faulty Starter Relay
