The big problem is Islamist terrorism has international support. It is no longer purely home grown and we do not have the resources to sort it by ourselves. Add to that a now openly predatory, transactional United States who have added fuel to the fire with their highly publicised 'intervention' that has drawn attention. if you look at the news you will find that the islamists are for all intents and purposes in control of mali and niger.

a simple analogy is if the neighborhood riffraff who used to sneak into people houses to steal phones , get caught and beaten up has now been given an ak 47 by some bigger criminals. he is now too big for the neighbourhood to handle
