I have been anticipating that terrorist activities in Nigeria would decrease due to growing conflict in the Middle East. My anticipation was informed by the belief that terrorism in Nigeria is backed by one or more of the forces currently engaged, directly or indirectly, in the battle between Iran, Israel and America. I felt that funding for Boko Haram, ISWAP, etc., would dry up as Middle Eastern or Western paymasters repurposed spending to their own needs.

Imagine my surprise when, instead, terrorism increased in Nigeria. This made me begin to reassess my belief that any of these Middle Eastern or American powers were the ones funding terror in Nigeria after all.

But then it occurred to me that if you are a terrorist group being funded by powers abroad, and that funding dries up, you might redouble whatever efforts you previously engaged in that supplemented your main income—activities such as kidnapping for ransom.

The era of foreign funding waned post COVID. To add to your submission, the intensity is also to keep themselves relevant. It's still a turf war there.

In my own humble opinion ill say terrorism/Insecurity in Nigeria is usually more complex. Groups like Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province do not rely on only one funding stream, and most research shows that their financing is largely local or regional rather than directly controlled by major states such as Iran, Israel, or the Arab/Islamic sects.

Most of there fundings come from;

*Financial support from local politicians/Religious clerics who share the same ideology.
*Kidnapping for ransom
*Extortion of communities
*Smuggling across borders
*Cattle rustling
*Looting military bases.

Another angle of terrorist violence and insecurity, especially in the North is often depends more on local conditions than global geopolitics, such as:

*We have a government that is not serious about tackling insecurity, same as the military high command.
*Weak state control in rural areas
*Porous borders around Lake Chad
*Military pressure causing groups to fragment and regroup
For example, after internal disputes, Boko Haram split and one faction became ISWAP, which changed the pattern of violence. I might be wrong in my theory but, this is just my own observation over the years.

EXCLUSIVE: Troops kill ISWAP Top Shura Council Member Bako Gorgore in Borno

Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have reportedly killed a senior commander of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), Malam Bako Gorgore, also known as Abou Mustapha, during an encounter in Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State.

Security sources said Gorgore, believed to be about 60 years old, was killed during an encounter with troops in Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno, a region bordering the Lake Chad basin that has long served as a strategic hub for insurgent operations.

The development was reportedly confirmed through multiple intelligence channels after security operatives intercepted internal communications among ISWAP fighters acknowledging his death.

Gorgore was regarded as one of the longest-serving figures within the insurgency that began under the late Boko Haram founder, Mohammed Yusuf, in the early 2000s. Originally from Yunusari Local Government Area of Yobe State, he rose steadily through the ranks to become one of the most influential commanders within the ISWAP hierarchy.

Over the years, he occupied several strategic operational and leadership roles within the group, particularly in the Timbuktu Triangle, the vast forested and marshland region stretching across northern Borno near Lake Chad.

Between 2018 and 2021, he reportedly served as the overall commander responsible for the Faruuk axis in the Timbuktu Triangle following the tenure of another insurgent commander, Mustapha Krimima. During that period, intelligence assessments described Gorgore as one of the key operational planners responsible for coordinating insurgent movements and logistics across the Lake Chad region.

Role in the fall of Abubakar Shekau

One of the most defining episodes associated with Gorgore was the internal conflict within the Boko Haram movement that culminated in the death of Abubakar Shekau, the notorious leader of Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad (JAS). Security sources say Gorgore was among the senior ISWAP commanders who led fighters into Sambisa Forest in 2021, during the confrontation that forced Shekau into a final standoff.

According to intelligence reports at the time, Shekau detonated an explosive device during the confrontation in Tokumbere area of Sambisa, killing himself and some of his loyalists rather than surrender to the ISWAP faction. The incident dramatically reshaped the insurgent landscape in the North-East, weakening the JAS faction while strengthening ISWAP’s operational dominance in parts of Borno State.

Rise to ISWAP’s top leadership circle

Following the restructuring of ISWAP leadership after the Sambisa events, Gorgore continued to consolidate his influence within the organisation.
By 2022, he was elevated to the Shura Council, the highest decision-making body within the group, operating under the broader command structure aligned with the Islamic State’s global leadership.

Before his elevation to the council, he reportedly served as Amir Jaysh (military commander) in the Timbuktu Triangle after Mustapha Krimima.
His responsibilities included supervising combat operations, managing fighters, and coordinating activities across the Lake Chad “Tumbumma” enclaves a network of islands and marshlands long used as insurgent hideouts.

Previous death rumours

Interestingly, Gorgore had previously been reported dead in 2022, when intelligence suggested he was killed in a Nigerian Air Force airstrike targeting ISWAP positions in the Lake Chad region. However, subsequent intelligence assessments indicated that he survived the strike with injuries and later resurfaced within the group’s command structure. His reappearance at the time reinforced perceptions of him as one of the more resilient and elusive figures within the insurgency.

In a strategic move to bolster operational efficiency and foster inter-unit camaraderie, the 1 Division Training School (DTS) successfully conducted the final Field Training Exercise (FTX) for SHINING STAR Course IX/26. The exercise, codenamed EX BUGUN DOKI, was held in collaboration with the Warrant Officers Academy (WOA) Course 47, which provided the essential command and control framework. The intensive four-day exercise took place at the Nigerian Army School of Infantry (NASI) Training Area in Jaji from Thursday, 26 February to Sunday, 1 March 2026.

Designed to test troops against a controlled adversary, EX BUGUN DOKI provided students of EX SHINING STAR IX/26 with practical immersion in battle drills, Counter-Insurgency (COIN) operations, Ambush/Counter-Ambush tactics, and IED clearance. Participants also underwent rigorous training in raid operations, enemy camp neutralization, and advanced map reading. These modules are specifically designed to actualize the Command Philosophy of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt Gen Waidi Shaibu.

The 1 Division Training Officer (DTO), Brigadier General Abdullahi Hassan Gwani, emphasized that this joint collaboration ensures training synergy. He noted that the exercise aligns with the COAS’s vision: "To advance the transformation of the Nigerian Army into a more professional, adaptable, combat-ready, and resilient force capable of decisively discharging its constitutional responsibilities within a joint and multi-agency environments."

The Commandant, Warrant Officers Academy, Brigedier General Anthony Wende who spoke through Lieutenant Colonel Zeerenjo Aguomba remarked that such training is the bedrock of preparedness, stressing that rigorous simulation prepares personnel to operate effectively, safely, and lawfully under the high-pressure environment of active combat. He further expressed his gratitude to the COAS for the continued support and resources provided for troop development.
Key highlights of the FTX included a 10-kilometer tactical advance, section and company-level battle procedures, and defensive routines encompassing patrols, search and rescue operations, and precision raids.

PRESS RELEASE

MULTIPLE SUICIDE BOMB EXPLOSIONS IN MAIDUGURI METROPOLIS

The Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) wishes to inform the general public of suicide bomb explosions that occurred at about 7:05 p.m. on Monday, 16 March 2026, in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council (MMC). The explosions were carried out by suspected Boko Haram terrorist suicide bombers who detonated improvised explosive devices at three different locations within the city, namely the Post Office area, Monday Market axis and the entrance to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) during the period of Iftar (breaking of fast). The cowardly attacks targeted crowded public areas in an attempt by the terrorists to inflict mass casualties and create panic within the metropolis.

Troops of Operation HADIN KAI, in conjunction with the Nigeria Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Team and other sister security agencies, responded swiftly to the incident and immediately secured and cordoned off the affected locations to prevent further harm. Emergency response teams, including personnel from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other medical service providers, promptly evacuated casualties to the General Hospital, Specialist Hospital and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital for urgent medical attention.

Medical teams are currently attending to injured victims at various health facilities across the city, while emergency responders continue rescue and evacuation efforts at the affected locations.

Preliminary information further indicates that the terrorists may have deployed multiple suicide bombers into Maiduguri with the intention of carrying out coordinated suicide bombings at crowded locations. Security forces have therefore intensified surveillance, patrols and counter-IED measures across the metropolis to track down any remaining suspects and prevent further attacks.

Members of the public are therefore urged to remain calm but vigilant, avoid crowded areas where possible and promptly report any suspicious persons, unattended items or unusual activities to the nearest security agency. Operation HADIN KAI commiserates with the families of the victims and assures the public that troops and all security agencies remain fully committed to safeguarding lives and property while relentlessly pursuing terrorist elements responsible for these heinous acts.

TROOPS OF OPERATION HADIN KAI FOIL COORDINATED TERRORIST ATTACKS AT NJIMTILO, BAGA, BURATAI , DAMBOA, INFLICT HEAVY LOSSES ON ISWAP FIGHTERS

Troops of the Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), have once again demonstrated superior combat readiness and tactical dominance by successfully thwarted terrorist attacks launched by ISWAP fighters on multiple troops locations at Njimtilo, Baga, Buratai and Damboa. The attacks, which occurred in the early hours of 16 March 2026, were mounted from several directions in a desperate attempt by the terrorists to gain propaganda advantage and overrun military positions.

At Ajiri Cross, ahead of Njimtilo, terrorists attempted to infiltrate positions mounted by troops of Sector 1 but were swiftly detected and decisively engaged by the vigilant troops who had anticipated the move and prepared a deliberate offensive-defensive posture to defeat the assault. Through coordinated firepower and tactical manoeuvre designed to disrupt the attackers and cut off their withdrawal routes, the terrorists were routed and forced into a disorganised retreat while suffering heavy casualties. Similar desperate attacks at Baga, Buratai and Damboa were met with determined resistance as troops brought superior firepower to bear on the attackers. The engagements were further reinforced by timely close air support from the Air Component and the Nigerian Army Aviation, whose precision strikes disrupted the terrorists’ assault formations and compounded their losses as they attempted to withdraw.

During the engagements, several terrorists were neutralised, including a key leader who spearheaded the Buratai assault, while many others sustained injuries as they fled along their withdrawal routes. Despite the intensity of the firefights, which resulted in the destruction of some equipment and a number of wounded personnel, troops remained resolute and maintained firm control of all locations while continuing exploitation operations to pursue the fleeing terrorists.

Following the engagements, troops conducted exploitation operations around Baga, extending to Korochara and Garin Giwa ahead of the Gidan Kaje general area. During the exploitation, troops recovered significant quantities of enemy weapons and equipment, including 3 PKT machine guns, 7 AK-47 rifles, 206 rounds of PKT ammunition, 418 rounds of anti-aircraft ammunition, 7 AK-47 magazines, 3 AK-74 magazines and 3 RPG bombs. Other items recovered include 2 camel bags, 3 head warmers, 1 blanket, 1 magazine carrier and 1 litre of engine oil, while 3 motorcycles used by the terrorists were also destroyed. In addition, 7 terrorist corpses were recovered while the miscreants buried another 20 bodies in shallow graves.

These failed attacks further demonstrate the growing desperation of terrorist elements under sustained operational pressure from OPHK forces across the Theatre. The successive defeats inflicted on the terrorists have significantly constrained their freedom of action and disrupted their attempts to create false propaganda narratives.

Troops remain in high spirits and continue to dominate the operational environment through superior tactical coordination, decisive firepower and sustained offensive operations against terrorist enclaves and logistics corridors. Operation HADIN KAI therefore reassures the public that all affected locations remain firmly under the control of own troops and that the Joint Task Force remains fully committed and capable of decisively defeating terrorist elements across the North East. Members of the public are also urged to remain vigilant and disregard disinformation and fake reports aimed at undermining ongoing counter-terrorism operations.

NAF DESTROYS TERRORIST HIDEOUTS AT ABIRMA, NEUTRALISES SEVERAL FIGHTERS DURING FOILED INFILTRATION AT MALAM FATORI, BORNO STATE

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Air Component, operating under joint task force of Operation HADIN KAI, has recorded another operational success following a precision air interdiction mission conducted against terrorist hideouts at Abirma, a confirmed insurgent enclave in the southern axis of the Lake Chad region of Borno State, on 17 March 2026. The operation was executed based on credible Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR), which confirmed the active presence of terrorist fighters within the settlement.

Subsequent aerial observation revealed insurgent movements around concealed structures deliberately hidden under dense vegetation, a tactic frequently employed to evade detection. Following positive target identification and rigorous verification in line with established operational procedures, NAF air assets executed precision strikes on the identified locations. The targets were engaged with precision munitions, resulting in the destruction of multiple terrorist structures and the disruption of their activities in the area. Preliminary Battle Damage Assessment (BDA) indicates that the strikes significantly degraded the terrorists’ capacity to utilise the location as a staging ground for attacks across the Lake Chad Basin.

In a related development, NAF air assets, in close coordination with Nigerian Army troops, neutralised several terrorists during a foiled infiltration attempt at Malam Fatori in Abadam Local Government Area of Borno State in the early hours of 18 March 2026. The joint response successfully prevented the insurgents from breaching defensive positions, thereby reinforcing ongoing efforts to stabilise the border communities. These operations underscore the Nigerian Air Force’s sustained reliance on intelligence-driven precision air power as part of broader joint force efforts to dismantle terrorist networks and support ground operations aimed at restoring lasting peace and normalcy in the North East.

The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, reassured Nigerians that sustained air operations across multiple theatres remain focused on protecting innocent lives, safeguarding communities, and denying terrorist and criminal elements the freedom to operate anywhere within the country. He emphasised that the Service remains committed to executing its missions professionally, with strict adherence to rules of engagement and internationally recognised standards in civilian harm mitigation.

63 ISWAP’s bodies recovered after failed attack on Malam Fatori

Troops of Sector 3 Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), supported by the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), have recovered no fewer than 63 bodies of Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists following a failed infiltration attack on Malam Fatori in Abadam Local Government Area of Borno.

Military sources said the insurgents launched the attack in the early hours of Wednesday, advancing on foot and deploying armed drones in an attempt to overrun the 68 Battalion position.

The sources disclosed that the attack, which originated from the Duguri axis through the frontage of Bravo Company, was met with overwhelming resistance from troops, backed by precision air strikes.

According to the sources, the coordinated response led to a decisive defeat of the terrorists, who suffered heavy casualties during the engagement.

“Following the engagement and subsequent clearance operations, a total of 63 terrorist bodies were recovered within and around the general area of Malam Fatori, indicating the scale of losses inflicted on the insurgents,” a military source said.

He added that the Air Component conducted multiple interdiction missions, delivering accurate strikes on identified enemy concentrations, which significantly degraded their fighting capability.

“The synergy between air and ground forces ensured that the terrorists were fixed and neutralised in large numbers, forcing the remnants to withdraw in disarray towards the Arege axis,” he said.
