Nigerians Criticize Nasarawa Governor Sule for Reneging on Pledge Not to Seek Public Office

……..Social media users accuse governor of eroding public trust as he declares Senate ambition for 2027

Nigerians have taken to social media to criticize Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule over his decision to contest for a senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections, despite a public vow made in 2024 that he would not seek any elective office after the expiration of his tenure.

Governor Sule, who is currently serving his second and final term, recently declared his intention to vie for the Nasarawa North Senatorial District seat. The announcement has triggered widespread backlash, with many citizens accusing the governor of betraying public confidence and treating campaign promises as disposable.

In January 2024, during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme, Governor Sule had categorically stated that he had no plans to run for the Senate or any other public office after completing his eight-year tenure. “By the time I finish my eight years, I can do whatever I want to do. You can take it from me confidently that I have no intention to run for the office of a senator. You can keep this tape and play it one day,” he said at the time.

However, his recent declaration has been viewed by many as a complete reversal of that position.
Reacting to the development, political commentator Agada Abuh Theo wrote on X: “In 2024, the Nasarawa State Governor vowed he would never seek any public office again after his tenure.

Fast forward to 2026, the same man has now declared his intention to run for Senate. Politicians are liars. No wonder they can’t keep their words or honour campaign promises.

Governor Sule is not an honourable man. People like him are exactly why there’s such a deep trust deficit between leaders and the led.

Another social media user noted that one of the reasons Nigerians have stopped trusting politicians is their inability to keep promises.

In a strongly worded post, the ADC Vanguard stated: “Governor Abdullahi Sule told Nigerians in clear terms that after his tenure, he would not run for any office again.

Today, that promise appears abandoned. This is exactly why public trust in leadership keeps collapsing, because too many politicians treat their words as disposable once ambition returns.
A vow made before the people is not a casual statement. It is a test of character.

If leaders can so easily walk away from their own public commitments, then what value should citizens place on any promise they make about governance, accountability, or service?

Nigeria deserves leaders whose words still mean something. The issue here is not just Senate ambition. It is integrity. And when integrity is missing, the people have every right to ask hard questions.
Leadership must be built on honour, not convenience.”

The criticism echoes a 2024 reaction by X user Lungu Dogara, who had replied to a Channels Television post about the governor’s statement, saying: “Naso una dey talk. Once your tenure is elapsing, you’ll find a way of getting Senate ticket. Normally, Nigeria senate have turned to Governor’s retirement ground.”

Many Nigerians online are now calling on politicians to uphold their words and urging Governor Sule to honour his earlier commitment by refraining from seeking further elective office.
The development has once again highlighted the growing trust deficit between Nigerian political leaders and the citizenry, with calls for greater accountability and integrity in public service intensifying ahead of the 2027 polls.

However, it is his right to switch sides and contest and another thing is the right of the electorates to decide and apparently the odd is not in his favor because Nasarawa North is not Gayam or Ciroma wards this time it is for a Mada man to occupy the distinguish office.

Did he seek it in the first place? He almost conceded defeat before adamu and almakura roared at him. They worked with the leadership of apc to work it out for him. At some point, he became like a dundee as his conscience no gree him rest. I guessed those 2 men threatened him..

And the inec boss, who has now been compensated with an ambassadorial office simply said yes sir and did the needful.

Then don't vote him in.
I don't understand this defeatist mentality.
It is as if once you are in office, in authority or with the ruling party you only need to yawn to have your way.

Why are Nigerians this diminished mentally and have their wills totally captured.

If the man has integrity issues, if the man cannot be trusted with his word, if the man is not honest in his ways you simply look elsewhere and end that kind of behaviour in the polity. When a people lose the reins of democracy standards of life become unmanageable.

Other democratic nations we see and admire are not made by the whims of one or two individuals in leadership over time but by the collective wills of a people that know right from wrong, good from bad, honesty from dishonesty and have come to appreciate that in order for their lives to be made better, they need to TAKE A STAND.

People with integrity issues WILL corrode the morals of society if they cannot be held accountable. FACT.

He should just allow David Ombugado to get to the Senate bcoz he's been robbed guber twice by the same gov sule. The guy had to cross to APC recently bcoz he realized that PDP has been demystified and can no longer take him to his political height.

As far as I'm concerned, he is the best governor to emerge from Nasarawa state. He is building a number of flyovers and underpasses that will put to an end the gridlock in Nyanya and Mararaba axis. If dat goslow never do you shege you no go understand wetin I dey talk about.
Re: Nigerians Criticize Nasarawa Governor For Reneging On Pledge Not To Seek Office by IkeOnyia: 7:00pm On Mar 21
He changed his mind only because a popular Christian candidate indicated that he wants to run for that same senatorial seat . And this governor is not even indigenous to Nasarawa but migrated from Kanuriland in the north east.

You don't win an election in Nigeria because people voted for you. You win an election in Nigeria because you know how to manipulate the system. As he has declared, he just needs to know how to beat the system. That's why when I see people going to vote on election day, I see them as fools
