For more than 40 years the Catholics have prayed to God against Bribery and Corruption in Nigeria and they also have the prayer for Nigeria in Distress.

These prayers are prayed during every Sunday mass and daily masses in all parishes and outstations.

The pragmatic question I have is- Have these prayers been answered in anyway?

Do other churches and Muslims have such daily or weekly recitals and prayers for Nigeria.

No Catholic has ruled this country since 1999, is it proper to continue to pray the ineffectual prayer for almost half a century, while others from other faiths run the country aground?

There are many hard questions I want to ask.

Prayer against Bribery & corruption in Nigeria

Father in heaven, You always provide for all your creatures, so that all may live as you have willed. You have blessed our country Nigeria with rich human and natural recourses to be used in honour and glory and for the well being of every Nigerian.

We are deeply sorry for the wrong use of these your gifts and blessings through acts of injustice, bribery and corruption, as a result of which many of our people are hungry, sick, ignorant and defenceless. Father, you alone can heal us and our nation of this sickness.

We beg you, touch our lives and the lives of our leaders and people so that we may all realise the evil of bribery and corruption and work hard to eliminate it. Raise up for us God-fearing people and leaders who care for us and who will lead us in the path of peace, prosperity and progress. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, Have mercy on us

Prayer for Nigeria in Distress

All powerful and merciful Father

You are a God of justice love and peace,

You rule over all the nations of the earth,

Power and might are in your hands and no one can withstand you,

We present our country Nigeria before you,

We praise and thank you for you are the source of all we have and are,

We are sorry for all the sins we have committed and for the good deeds we have failed to do.

In your loving forgiveness keep us safe from the punishment we deserve.

Lord we are weighed down not only by uncertainties but also by moral, economic and political problems. Listen to the cries of Your people who confidently turn to You.

God of infinite goodness, our strength in adversity, our health in weakness, our comfort in sorrow

Be merciful to us your people; spare this nation Nigeria from chaos, anarchy and doom.

Bless us with your kingdom of justice, love and peace.

We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord

Jesus never prayed for Israel so what is the essence of doing what Jesus never laid down for his followers?🤔

We must continue to pray.

The Bible says Pray without ceasing.

It's good wishing your country well but in Christianity we must not raise our voice in prayer for people who are not doing God's will.

Take for instance Jeremiah the prophet due to his love for Jerusalem and God's temple he kept praying to God but this is what God said in response:

"As for you, do not pray in behalf of this people. Do not cry out in their behalf or offer a prayer for them, for I will not be listening when they call out to me because of their calamity." Jeremiah 11:14

“Do not pray for good to come to this people. When they fast, I do not listen to their entreaties, and when they offer whole burnt offerings and grain offerings, I take no pleasure in them, for by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence, I will do away with them.” Jeremiah 14:11-12

WHY?

Because God detests hypocritical prayers when those involved won't obey His laws. Proverbs 28:9

The same happened when Jesus walked the earth he refused to pray in behalf of Israel but only for those following him {John 17:8-9} that was why some Jews concluded that Jesus must be resurrected Jeremiah because he will not pray for Israel. Matthew 16:14
