fire an rpg at an enemy soldier
all you'll see are body parts flying
fire a bullet from a handgun at an enemy soldier

if you hit parts like the limbs, the enemy soldier might actually be able to leap away to safety

in the russia-ukraine war
both sides have state of the art defense systems
they both suffer losses, but the systems are replaced and stock replenished
russia obviously has a better replenishment rate than ukraine

russia has several s-400s and ukraine has patriots, iris-t, s300 and other systems

iran however relies on a homegrown air defense system for sustainability reasons
persia does not want to rely on imports in the middle of a war
in an earlier post, i revealed the backbone of persia's air defense systems
since they rely on missiles and drones launchers
they designed a cheap air defense platform whose primary objective is to take out the main predators of launchers--mid-sized attack drones

these drones are fat, easy targets
and the air defense platform for taking them down are portable, easy to build, and plentiful so they can be dispersed across the large country that is as big as western europe
this platform is not like an s-400 or an iris-t
you don't need an s-400 to take out a drone
in fact, it will be overkill
and even by axis standards of inexpensive weaponry, this inexpensive homegrown drone-centric air defense platform is tens of times cheaper than an s-400

now persia has upgraded versions of these platforms that they disperse across the country
where they perform ambushes
the usrael jets fly thinking there's nothing in the area probably because they've conducted strikes recently without incident
and then they're hit

the air defense projectile does not work as a bullet
but more like a shotgun shell
fire it at a target and when it gets close it explodes into shrapnel
this is how a lot of air defense projectiles work

shrapnel from a drone-centric platform is like a handgun bullet
shrapnel from an s-400 or iris-t is like an rpg

get hit by an s-400 and you'll meet your maker
get hit by a drone-centric ad system and the jet will sufffer shrapnel damage and then you can sprint out quickly into the gulf

any jet that gets hit by these platforms and make it back to base are taken out of service
the american media themselves confirmed that when the f-35 was hit, the pilot himself was hit by shrapnel and the jet suffered damage
and both would be unable to participate in hostilities going forward

would iran like that these jets crash inside iranian territory
absolutely
but there is a tradeoff
the choice is between plentiful domestic drone-centric ad platforms that cover the entire country and are easy to hide
or a few s-400-grade systems with active radars that can be detected by the enemy from outside iranian territory and will be relentlessly targeted and still would not cover the entire country
with their limited funds they logically went for the former

a damaged jet is a damaged jet
everyone will prefer a crash but if it limps away and crash lands in the gulf
it has the same effect
that jet will no longer participate in the war

While I get this analogy and I agree a bit due to the lesser warhead Iran air defense missile pose. But you should know even a simple handgun pellet, shot to the arm can prove lethal. Lethality of the handgun is not just in its caliber but the structures hit in the body as a major artery can mean death in minutes, you won't even have time to limp off.
If Iran has claimed to have targeted lots of jet, no matter how small the projectile is, they should have been a luck of crash inside its territory at least.
Even a small bird strike can prove lethal to the biggest of plane, not to mention hot metals shrapnel tearing through a scramjet engine, you don't need to do much the jet propulsion and combustion chamber will do the rest, blowing itself out of the sky.

You can't rationally say dozens of active targeted jet make it alive, without even one ounce of explosion or system failure or is US jets made of bulletproof and immune to shrapnel hits?
It shows one thing Iran reports are over blown and few once in a time incidents.

Any operation on kharg island place US naval asset deep in the gulf and exposed to saturated Iranian fire. Troops on Iranian soil will also be exposed to counter artillery batteries and drones from Iran.
