The Oyo State Government has fixed April 3rd for the coronation of the Senator representing Oyo South senatorial district, Sarafadeen Alli as a crown wearing high chief.

This move, OYOINSIGHT.COM, understands is part of the intrigues for the 2027 gubernatorial elections in the state.

According to the Ibadan chieftaincy law, crown wearing chiefs in the Olubadan-in-council are not allowed to openly participate in partisan politics. This indicates that Ali’s promotion will halt his bid to run for the 2027 gubernatorial seat in the state.

The statement fixing the conferment of the new chiefs, signed by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Ademola Ojo, read in part: “I have the directive to refer to Your Majesty’s correspondence ref. no L/ADV/Co/1242/843 dated 23rd March, 2026 in respect of the above and to inform Your Majesty that while making arrangement for the compilation of the High Chiefs and Baales who are due for beaded crown wearing in Ibadanland as requested, it is traditionally necessary and very essential at this point in time that the newly elevated Chiefs in Olubadan-in-Council i.e

i. High Chief Akeem Bolaji Adewoyin — Ekeerin Olubadan
ii. High Chief Sarafadeen Abindin Ali — Ekaarun Balogun
iii. High Chief Kola Babalola — Ekaarun Olubadan

the chieftaincy coronation is it by force one must accept it?
if Sarafadeen Alli don't want the chieftaincy but governorship, can he reject it?
if he accept the chieftaincy title knowing fully it will stop him from contesting the upcoming governorship election in the state, it is because he want it.

The Governor was not expecting the APC’s choice of Senator Ali. He only prepared for Adelabu, whom he believed he would defeat.

If Sharafadeen Alli truly wants to be governor in 2027, he should approach a Federal High Court to obtain a perpetual injunction to defer the chieftaincy title for now, because it’s not done in good faith and if not delayed, it would affect his traditional hierarchical seniority.
Trying to combine both will likely cost him both.

I believe the matter falls under the jurisdiction of the Oyo state high court (I stand to be corrected) and the Governor has significant influence there. But the senator can still approach the federal high Court, at least to buy time..

Issues concerning chieftaincy matters fall within the residual list.... It is under the jurisdiction of State High Courts.

But where a chieftaincy event would affect his fundamental human right to vote and be voted for in an election recognized by the constitution, a Federal High Court has jurisdiction.
The customary law which prevents him from contesting INEC elections, is a local law and any law that is inconsistent with the constitution is null and void to the extent of its inconsistency.

Don't think this writeup is credible as the only thing that can stop someone from being a governor has to be listed in the constitution, not any local law or custom.

Who is he?
Chieftaincy title is not by force he can reject it if he's sure of himself, or he wants to use it as an excuse because Adelabu seems to have an edge in Oyo State APC

Ladoja and other high chiefs then have not been wearing beaded crowns, it was only the Olubadan that's wearing beaded crown then.
