It is actually a very stupid bill to even consider, I always tell my colleagues on the importance of being part of politics, because that is where the decision are made. This is the advantage the physician have over other health professionals.
Imagine a physician heading PCN, it sounds very silly right. I think it is time for johesu to wake up, they have been sleeping for too long.

So a Dr will leave his primary work to come to the lab for instance and start telling laboratory personnels what to do? A Dr will now decide who laboratory council should license and start regulating private laboratories when we have alot of unregulated practices that the mdcan has not yet finished with they are encroaching into other profession, it is nothing but power driving attitude and ego that's all. In the hospital they make almost all the decisions but taking it to private sectors is far too much, I can not own a lab until a Dr comes and certified, everyone cannot b a Dr and we all need everyone to work together for a proper healthcare delivery, in the hospital all the positions are occupied by Dr no one blinks about but don't take it to my personal business
You see how stupid it sounds, now these greedy doctors are forcing themselves in lab as the head in most of the federal medical centers, I heard in asaba they are the supervising the pathology laboratory now.

Medical Doctors dey over do things normally. The government should start appointing Pulic Administration Officers to head Teaching hospitals and other public health institution.
Even in the USA the medical director is a medical doctor. No where in the world is a medical director of a hospital not a doctor. What they they should ague for is that government should establish the role of a chief executive officer who oversees both the medical directors and Head of nursing services. He cam be an administrator not necessarily a doctor. But as for a medical director it's definitely doctors position

When you have people at the realm of affair only have forged certificates, secondary school leaving certificate and individuals who got the position or elected via bribes and money.

What do you expect?

Because those ones heading your ministries are doing such an incredible job abi?

Let's not play politics with Healthcare abeg.

Administration requires knowledge of the terrain you're looking over.

The doctor has the most knowledge in the health sector.

Of course he's not to be the sole leader but that final decision to me should come from a doctor.
As a Medical Doctor myself,I'm completely against this decision. It's not global best practice. Other countries allow autonomy and teamwork among healthcare cadres, and there's a reason for that. This approach is a recipe for chaos and will further polarize the already tense working relationship between medical doctors and other allied healthcare professionals.

Clinical knowledge isn't everything; healthcare provision is broad, and no one cadre can master it all. Devolution of roles allows for specialization and adequate expertise. This mindset to control other cadres or been seen as the rate-limiting step in the hospital at all cost is one major reason we’ve been seeing Nigerian doctors perform tasks meant for other cadres and sometimes to the level of janitorial, porter’s and errand staff roles ,contributing to burnout and the "Japa syndrome" of Nigerian doctors leaving the country. Worse off , these shortcomings have been normalized.
It may also interest you to know that most of these doctors that pull down the sky just for them not to be led by other allied healthcare professionals, will gladly accept a job offer to work under the leadership of even non- healthcare related professionals in hospitals overseas. So what’s all this so called academic credential fuss about ?

Hospitals can be led effectively by non-physicians, and leadership shouldn't be dictated by academic credentials alone. I've been led by nurses, pharmacists, and other professionals who excelled, while some senior medical consultants failed in administrative roles. I have also led professors and senior medical consultants in administrative positions equivalent to the CMD and had a successful tenure.

Leadership is about teamwork, mutual respect, and recognizing the value of each cadre. It's time to move beyond the "minigod mentality" and elitism that hinders effective healthcare delivery. The roles of healthcare professionals should be complementary, not competitive.

Make all of them rest. Let the govt start appointing administrators to lead hospitals. Same with minister of health. Just like it is not necessary for minister of works to be an engineer.
Minister of works must be an Engineer else there will be misplaced priorities.... for the healthcare system however...countries with robust healthcare systems have professionals administrators running the health centres

What do you think my fellow Nairalanders?
As governors were political Lords in the states and political slaves to Aso Rock, they wanted doctors to be health care delivery lords and other health professionals to be slaves.
Always proposing confusion and enslavement politics!

Whoever or group of whoevers even drafted it and sent it to National Assembly must be exposed.

It is a recipe for disaster that even NUC will struggle with!

The one late Prof. Olikoye Ransome-Kuti created is yet to abate, now another individual wants to go down in ignominy.

If the National Assembly fails to throw the draft out then FG should get ready to have public healthcare facilities and agencies shut for a long time until the draft is thrown out.
What has NUC got to do with this?

It's not a merger.

It's a regulatory unit. What the doctors are saying is, yes you can do your thing but you'll still be subject to us.

Now imagine in a hospital, the nurse are doing their things on a patient, the physiotherapist are doing another thing to the same patient and then there's the doctor doing his thing to the same patient.

The doctors are basically saying everyone should not be allowed to do as they want because they are under different authorities.

It's better we have one leader who makes the final decision.
What you are saying is different. What you wrote about is on patient management. In every hospital in Nigeria, it is the doctor that owns the patient. The doctor prescribe what medications he will take, write the test the patient should do, write the plan for the patient and the nurses follow the plan etc. Of course, if the pharmacist, nurse, or laboratory scientist has any issue with the doctor's plan, they can reach out to the doctor. What you just said doesn't happen in any hospital in the world.

Trying to put all health professionals under MDCN (which is different from what you are saying) is a bad idea. I am a doctor and the idea doesn't make sense

Stop distorting the truth and deluding yourself, the running of the hospital or a health ministry is purely administrative as being practiced globally or in a saner clime.Kindly Google to check the profession of those at the helms of affairs of the health ministries of most western countries and see that they are most times not of the physician professions.

Doc, have you read through the bills?.
There is no clinical governance in health sector. Professional bodies are extending their roles without recourse to clinical governance. I am sure most of those guys saying new health bills would make doctors dominate over them do not understand clinical governance. In developed countries, there is clinical governance and health system is well-structured.
Most professional bodies in nigeria operate like cults and money-making ventures. Now government wants to introduce some measure to ensure transparency.
I don't see how the bills benefit average doctor. Johesu leaders are mobilising their members against new bills because it would stop agitation in health sector.
The new bills would safeguard health of the nation.

They all work in one hospital, they all work for one goal. So why many umbrellas. I beg all fall under medical.
If they can fund the organization themselves let them continue but if they are expecting anything from government aside salary they're gented
You will think that is a good thing but from previous experiences, doctors always sideline others, never making other professionals to progress despite been better qualified. You won't understand if you are not in the health sector.

How? All you have to do is reconstitute the MDCN membership to be representative of all the professions involved. This is a needless war.
You won't see this shiii happening in western world except somewhere like Nigeria. Always about hierarchy not collaboration.

Their argument is valid
They fear for medical doctors dominating all top position. As it is very unlikely for a nurse or pharmacist to be the head of such association, when there are doctors there.
Exactly. They will continue to subdue all other health professionals.
