We sold 8 chickens the last 2 months, plus the ones we lost to rats. But the 5 hens and one Rooster we currently have are already working hard to repopulate our small poultry fast.

How are you doing. Okay. But the ones available right now (about 6 of them) are still at a stage where I an't tell male from female. But I will be able to tell male from female in 2 weeks time.

These hens can't stop surprising...smiles

They've have finally shared these eggs, can I even say shared? No! They've divided them into two, but none is permanently sitting/brooding on one, they're doing it interchangeably (i.e if the white hen sit on eggs A now and the brown hen sit on B, after like 3 hour you will see the white one sitting on B while the brown sitting on A).

In my mind I was like...why are you using the lives of these chicks to gamble? If they sha born you well make you no hatch them, na inside pot both of Una go end.
How is your local chicken rearing going so far?

I'm fine. Thanks. They are fine, although there was a time rats almost wiped them out. And then my neighbor put rat poison at various places outside his gate. The poison killed lots of rats, but also killed 3 of our adult chickens. But they are reproducing fast.

. Hmm. So we are looking at 2 weeks from today?

So you don't have ones nearing maturity? Please I sent you an email. Pls respond or better yet drop your number. Let's talk on WhatsApp.

I'll respond to your email, but let me also respond here. No, I don't have any nearing maturity. The ones we had ate rat poison and died. I thought you needed 4-6 weeks old chicks.

Oh really? Let me see...

truthhurts2:
I started with just five (4 hens and 1 roster) like 7 months ago, now, I have more than 60 of them apart from the 7 of them that died.

@mariangelese
Wow! Your chickens are thriving. cheesy

How are you able to keep them from predators?

By the way, I didn't see your mention earlier because you added an extra "e".

The extra "e" was a mistake and I actually didn't notice.

I really don't have problems with either hawks or any other predators of birds,
or snakes. The one and only predator I'm facing now is CAT. It's really tormenting them, and I even lost one turkey yesterday/today to that devil. Looking for a proper way to terminate his/her life without causing harm to the birds.

Those damn cats!

How about you sell off some of those chickens, so that you don't suffer loss?
Reducing them will make things easier to control.

What do you think?

You're actually right though, but don't you think controlling their numbers without tackling the REAL danger will still come with losses?

And I can't use poison nor do I have any traps...

Selling some off is for your profit. Or are you attached to the chickens?
That will not prevent you from tackling the danger.

Bro you have local hens for sale by the way? Where you located?

Lukuluku69:
Good one Op.

I actually have a Five Year experience in raising Local Chickens. In fact this February makes it the Fifth year and counting.

Started with 2 hens and a Rooster. Named the Two hens Black Gold (because of the colors of her plumage and the rate at which she lays) and the other Yomeye for her Stealthy ways. The Rooster we named Long John.

It has been a ride!

I rear them majorly for their meat and have had occasions where I gifted them to neighbors just for the goodwill.

In between those 5 years, they have produced over 800+ Chicks. While some reach maturity others died at infancy with Cats, Hawks and motorcycles being the Culprits.

I can write a Thesis on them but

Mine is a semi free range system for my chicken with a model of mixed breed of local and noiler in other to get more value for the effort put in place to raise the chicken. This style made my chicks to come out bigger than normal local chicken and they still have the nature of the local chickens.
I started with one female and 2 male chicks that I picked from my mums garden and they started multiplying.
I have raised multiple chicken and sold many.
I dont buy chicken nor egg in my house for years now
