A former National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Kola Ologbondiyan, has welcomed the defection of former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing the move as long anticipated.

Speaking in a chat with Daily Independent, Ologbondiyan said the ADC is positioning itself to rescue Nigerians from what he described as the "abysmal conditions created by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)".

According to him, the party had been expecting Kwankwaso to join its ranks and expressed optimism that his entry would strengthen the ADC ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“We are happy with Kwankwaso’s defection. It was long awaited. He is a well loved politician with a massive followership and t⁷he ADC has been expecting him to join the party. As our national chairman has said, the political future of Nigeria cannot be left in the hands of the APC. Their mission appears to be to undermine and weaken our democracy, and Nigerians have witnessed this over the years,” he said.

Ologbondiyan maintained that for Nigeria to make meaningful progress, citizens must look beyond the APC and support an alternative political platform capable of delivering effective governance, which the ADC provides.

“If Nigeria must make meaningful progress, it has to look for an alternative party that will usher in a fresh beginning. That is what the ADC represents,” he added.

The ADC chieftain also expressed confidence that Nigerians who are dissatisfied with the performance of the APC-led government will embrace the ADC in the 2027 elections.

“I don’t think Nigerians need any persuasion to join the ADC. We can all see what is happening across the country under the APC government. Take, for instance, the recent killings in Plateau State. From 2015 till now, the APC has failed the nation and lacks the capacity to lead Nigeria out of its present challenges,” he said.

He described the ADC as a forward-looking party committed to inclusive governance, adding that it provides opportunities for women, youths, and other Nigerians who are passionate about restoring the country’s fortunes.

“The ADC is futuristic in its thinking and decisions. It is giving space to all Nigerians, including women and youths, who are determined to restore Nigeria’s glory. If you are tired of the killings, poor economy, hunger, unemployment and other challenges which the APC is clueless about solving, then the ADC offers a credible alternative,” he said.

Ologbondiyan further argued that if Nigeria operated a political system that allowed for midterm elections, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would likely face significant electoral challenges based on his administration’s performance so far.

“If Nigeria practiced a system that allowed for midterm elections, President Tinubu would struggle to win based on his performance so far. Under his watch, the situation of the average Nigerian has worsened in terms of hunger, security of lives and property, unemployment, healthcare and fuel prices,” he said.

He, however, expressed confidence that Nigerians will use their votes in the 2027 general elections to determine the country’s political direction.

“Nigerians cannot continue to reinforce failure. It is clear that they are fed up with the APC and they will decide the nation’s future with their votes in 2027,” he stated.
