A touching and emotional protest was recorded in Abuja as children of individuals accused of plotting a coup took to the streets, crying and pleading with authorities.

In the viral video, the children were seen holding placards and chanting “Don’t kill our daddies!” as they begged for mercy, drawing sympathy from onlookers.

The situation has sparked mixed reactions online, with many Nigerians calling for justice and due process, while others debate the seriousness of the allegations.

Families of officers detained over ‘coup plot’ protest at n’assembly

Families of military officers detained over an alleged coup plot protested at the entrance of the national assembly in Abuja on Wednesday, demanding a speedy trial and access to their relatives.

The arrest of the officers was first announced on October 4, 2025, by Tukur Gusau, then director of defence information.

The protesters marched while holding placards with inscriptions such as “Don’t Kill Our Daddies”, “Detention Without Trial is Injustice”, and “Six Months of Torture: Enough Is Enough”.

Memuna Bashiru, who spoke on behalf of the families, said the prolonged detention had plunged their households into uncertainty and emotional distress.

She said the officers had been detained for over 160 days without trial or contact with their relatives.

Nana Ibrahim, one of the spouses of the detained officers, questioned the continued detention of the suspects.

The whole coup allegation and arrest are suspicious,” she said.

“Investigations have been ongoing for over six months, yet they have been denied access to their families and lawyers. If there is evidence of their involvement, it should be presented clearly.”

Halima Mohammed, an eight-year-old daughter of Almakura, asked the authorities to release her father.

Please don’t kill our daddy. We want justice for him. Since he was arrested by the government, our lives have not been the same. My mummy cries every day. I really miss him so much,” she said.

Ibrahim Bala, a nine-year-old son of Bala, said he had not seen his father for months.

“Let the government bring my daddy back safely. The last time I saw him was about nine months ago,” he said.

“I really miss him with all my heart. He used to teach me things about school and how children should behave towards adults.”

Fatima Yusuf, the four-year-old daughter of Yusuf, appealed directly to the nation’s leadership.

“I want to beg the President and our First Lady to bring my daddy back safely. Since he left, I have no one to play with. He always helped me learn things I didn’t know and took me out,” she said.

Nana Usman, 11, urged the government to either release the detained officers or arraign them in court.

“Please help us beg the government to release my daddy or take him to court. He and the others locked up deserve justice. Since he was taken away, the house has been empty without him,” she said.

The families were accompanied by Deji Adeyanju, a human rights lawyer, and Omoyele Sowore, an activist.

The protest comes about a month after families of the detained officers appealed to President Bola Tinubu to grant them access to their relatives and ensure they are either released or charged in court.

How many months since these officers were arrested ? Over 6 months!
How many months did Ironsi lock up Ifeajuna and Nzeogwu before officers of the Nigerian army kidnapped and killed Ironsi for not quickly trying them? 6 months!

So why is it that the South West who cheered on and still defends vigorously the actions of Gowon and his group in killing Ironsi (who helped to quash the January 15 coup) for not rushing the trial of Nzeogwu and Co, go very quiet as their son Tinubu prevaricates on sending these coupist to trial and the gallows??

Can we now say that Tinubu is protecting the coupists as Ironsi was accused of?

Na double standard be our problem in this country

Your Daddies planned to kill Mr. President and lots of other prominent Nigerians. If they had succeeded in their evil plots, you and your mothers would have been cruising around the country with escorts as children and wives of the new military rulers of Nigeria.

The penalty for a failed coup is death sentence. They should have thought about the consequences before planning to kill other people’s parents. The law must take its course.

I am not just happy that the coup failed. The countless Nigerians that have died because of the insensitive of this evil current government is enough to plot a coup for liberation from the drug baron and a well known certificate forger.

To see anyone from your side with sense is so rare these days.
You can only draw parallel if the coup had succeeded and a Northerner who benefitted from the coup failed to try the coup plotters

As much as this administration may not be performing well, a military coup is absolutely unacceptable. The failed coup was intended to be a bloody operation that would have left countless children without fathers. ...So let their father face the law.

Keep shifting the goal post 📫
A coup is a coup..
The officers involved in the coup against Tinubu are not denying.
They have been arrested and have confessed.
Investigation have been concluded.
Nothing is left but to prosecute and punish...

So why is Tinubu not acting fast?
It is a valid question.
Ironsi was killed not because he was involved in the coup. Dude was murdered because according to you guys, he wasted time in prosecuting and punishing the coupists.

When did the "Nzeogwu coup" happen? January 15th 1966.
When did the Murtala/Danjuma/Gowon coup take place? July 29th 1966!
Six moths intervals. So?
These army officers arrested by Tinubu have now spent over 6 months in jail. Why are you guys wasting time? Why not rush and try them??

You accused an igbo man called Aguiyi Ironsi of protecting his brothers by delaying prosecution of the January 1966 coupists, why are you not extending such measures/accusations to Tinubu who has now spent more time sitting on this recent coup plothuh
That's the billion dollar question you can never answer...

The point is that Ironsi was murdered for no reason! Dude was bidding his time because of the tension in the land. That's what Tinubu is probably doing too because of the upcoming elections..
But while I can see their reasons for delaying prosecution, ethnic champions like you will accuse Ironsi of being sectional in action..

Think about that for a mjnute...the

Hello children, your daddies knew what they were getting themselves into before they did. If they had succeeded with their planned coup, they would have killed other people's daddies too.

Sorry dear, go and read your books and learn to be law abiding citizens. But you see your daddies, sope otilor! grin

But they are alleged to have planned to kill the daddies of other children like you. Once proven they should be executed in line with Military Law. They should seek God's face for uncommon mercy not carrying placards. They just worsened their case with the rabble rouse and transactional fellow Omoyele Sowore in their corner!

If you do not take the past seriously enough which is all your subject is doing then you have no future worth calling one. If Tinubu does the needful and the daddies are found guilty and executed the children will recall history and be far away from planning coup in the future. Ever heard of a child of executed coup planners planning a coup? Not when they are in their right minds!

there is an old adage that says: “he who deliberately decides to swallow stones, must have complete faith in his anus”

If indeed the coup plot is true, then all those involved must be prepared to face the consequences of their actions. It is as simple as that.

Truth is, they are alleged to be planning to kill another daddy with other daddies dying with him as collateral damage. Those daddies also have children and wives who will become fatherless and widows. If proved your daddies are due to be executed. Best thing to do is to ask for the especial mercies of God not carrying placards. Things are bound to get complicated that way!
