You imagine eating bread with tea and sugar in morning
Afternoon, you ate rice and a bottle of soda
Dinner you added fufu and soup with a glass of of juice.
What you have not realized is that you have consumed the equivalent of one packet of sugar on that day. Sugar is converted to glucose during digestion and remains in the blood until acted upon.
Then the pancreatic cell start their process.
The unfortunate thing is that once your pancreas B cells are gone due to overwork of glucose regulation in your blood, you become insulin resistant. The B cellls are the cells that produce insulin.
What this means is sugar has no way of leaving your blood. Because it is insulin that helps the body cells to get glucose from the blood. Also, the blood is constantly too thick from too much glucose concentration and cannot flow well in your vessels. Remember also that the another function of the blood is to carry oxygen. The life of you organs depends on this oxygen.
As an analogy, imagine comparing water to honey flowing in pipe.
Thick blood is hard to flow and your heart will struggle to pump this thick blood. Remember, the function of the heart is to pump blood.
In the process of this struggle to pump, high blood pressure is developed. Remember that formula to calculate pressure in secondary school physics ( force / area). The more force the more pressure. Now you see why it is called high blood pressure. Not only that, the force exacted by the high pressure on tiny vessels will cause them to burst. Every material has an elastic limit , including the blood vessels. Those tiny vessels that burst first are often found in areas like eyes, heart, manhood, and intestines.
Eventually those organs will start to fall due to lack of blood supply. Deseases like blindness, neuropathy and heart failure set in. That is why diabetes causes amputation. And wound that is hard to heal. If there is no adequate blood supply, wound cannot heal. A very small cut on the extremity like toes will remain and become gangrene.
Another condition is tiredness. That insulin the body is now lacking, it plays a vital role in how the cells produce energy.
Without insulin the cells cannot get glucose to produce energy. So the person is always feeling tired because they lack energy.
Let me stop here. The story of what sugar does to the body is much . I have not even gone into how they contribute to fatty liver, high cholesterol, and obesity.
Story plenty!
Your ink will never dry, beautiful writeup .

In Nigeria, drinking soda is not just a habit, it's a culture. You go to a buka, there's cold soda on the table. You attend a party, the fridge is loaded with any cold soda. You're stressed at work, someone says "calm down, with something cold." We've normalised it so deeply that questioning it feels almost... rude.

Though nobody is telling that the sugar in those drinks is slowly and silently stacking up damage inside your body. And by the time you start to feel it, the harm has been building for years.
What Excess Sugar Actually Does to Your Body

The scary part is that sugar doesn't send you warning signs early. It quietly does its damage, and by the time your body raises an alarm, through fatigue, excess weight, or a doctor's result. the habit is already deeply rooted.

This is what's happening inside you with every excess sip:

Type 2 Diabetes: Nigeria has one of the highest diabetes rates in Africa. Excess sugar keeps your blood glucose spiking and crashing, wearing down your body's ability to manage insulin over time.

Obesity and weight gain: Sugary drinks add hundreds of empty calories that your body doesn't register as "full." You drink, you're still hungry, you eat and the cycle never breaks.

High blood pressure and heart disease: Sugar inflames your blood vessels and puts pressure on your heart. Hypertension is not just a "blood pressure thing" sugar is deeply connected. And in a country where hypertension is already rampant, this is not something to take lightly.

This Is Not About Suffering

Enjoyment is not the enemy. Ignorance is.

Many Nigerians are not drinking soda because they don't care about their health, they're drinking it because no one sat them down and explained what it does to the body over time, in plain language, without a lecture.

Your pancreas doesn't care that you were just trying to cool down in the afternoon heat. Your liver doesn't make exceptions because the party was fun. The body keeps an honest score even when we're not paying attention.

Start paying attention. Not with fear but with love for yourself and the people around you. Because the real enjoyment is being alive, healthy, and fully present for all the future parties, bukaterias, and cold evenings still ahead of you
My problem is not even this nonsense you put here. Alcohol has finished my money and my health. I was obese with beer until buhari did his wonders. I thank buhari for making beer expensive. I lost weight and became more healthy. Anybody who is drinking sugar especially a man, you are just on a death row

And you don't realize that some people's business depend on people being sick or dying? You are spoiling business for them. How do you think people in healthcare and funeral businesses feel reading your advise on how to stay healthy?

Behave yourself!

So taking soda once in a while will affect me?
Or are you saying sugar does not leave my body for days.

Let's assume I take soda once or twice monthly, I am accumulating sugar? So what's the function of my organs to detox my body.

All this fuss about sugar, drinks etc, to me has to do with, those who takes it almost every day.

Please don't demarket our product, I work in a beverage company.

I knew one madam in Abuja who used to drink no less than 10 bottles of Coke per day. Diabetes and ill health ravaged her, by the end she reduced to two bottles but the damage had been done. RIP Hauwa-Aso Rock

Nigerians do not drink enough of these to cause alarm. I laugh every time I read these types of articles. You drink one or two of these a day and fear for your health. Some oyibos claim water is bland and drink only soda to quench their thirst. They keep at it for decades without noticeable effects. Ogbeni, we will all die one day. Enjoy yourself.

Warren Buffet is almost 100,he takes 2 cans of coke everyday!
You are right, he actually takes 5 cans in total daily and eats like a 6 year old.

However, here is another useful information:

According to the CDC and the American Diabetes Association:
"Black adults are approximately 60% more likely to be diagnosed with diabetes than white adults."

1.Soda contains a lot of sodium...and also contains a lot of sugar

Sodium can affect BP, and sugar can cause obesity, which can cause BP problems.

2. Also, let's be frank (and I say this as a soda drinker, though I hope to stop this year, lol..at least I have stopped the sugary versions, mea culpa)..soda got a lot of artifical stuff. While the link between it and cancer is not proven totally, it could be there.

Better drink water though. Much better, quenches thirst better. But if you must drink soda, DRINK IT. Just be aware of the risks doing so.

Should we then rush to leave?

Or spend our years on the sick bed.

You had better learn wisdom before it's too late.

Excessive sugar fuels a wide range of illnesses in the body including cancer.

I created a post yesterday, but the mode did not deemed it fit of front page about Dubic malt which have just two cube of sugar.
Mynd44, post my Dubic malt now.
How did you know, did you do a lab analysis?

There are secrets you can never know if you are not a food scientist.

Did you know that taste can be masked? That's why beer, though bitter, has high sugar content.

Even when a product is labeled zero sugar or low sugar, it doesn't mean it's safe as it may contain a sweetener that's deadlier than sugar.

In an unregulated environment like Nigeria, even if Guinness itself claim that Dubic Malt contains only two cubes of sugar, while it may appeal to consumers, someone who knows a thing or two about the food industry will never believe it.

You say this because you abuse the privilege of being healthy. I bet your opinion will differ if you had to deal with insulin resistance, high blood pressure , pancreatitis exetera while still struggling to hold other aspects of your life together.

Not some Oyibos, I would say most Oyibos and foreigners especially Black Americans. You hardly see them drinking water. I always look like the odd one out whenever I go to the cafeteria and eat my food with water..

And you are wrong about them not noticing effects of it. Talk to them personally, you would realize that most of them have health challenges and they go to their doctors regularly for checkups. Both old and small. Infact they don't believe someone can live healthily without having to take medicine or injections of any kind for anything. They are always taking medicines for the slightest of health discomfort.
