How President Tinubu Is Fighting Jihad by Wordsfrombimpe(op): 12:05am On Apr 02
Under the administration of President Bola Tinubu, the approach to solving the decades-long insurgency (often referred to as "jihadist" movements like Boko Haram and ISWAP) has shifted toward a "holistic" strategy. The current policy, reflected in the 2026 Budget of Consolidation and Renewed Resilience, moves away from purely military engagement toward a mix of intelligence-led operations and social "non-kinetic" interventions.

Here is how Nigeria is currently attempting to solve this crisis:

1. The "New National Counter-Terrorism Doctrine"

President Tinubu recently unveiled a redesigned security architecture. The goal is a unified command where the Army, Air Force, and intelligence agencies (like the DSS and NIA) share real-time data rather than operating in silos.

Technological Surveillance: Increased investment in drones and satellite imagery to track movements in the Sambisa Forest and the Lake Chad islands.

Targeting the Network: The doctrine explicitly classifies not just fighters, but also financiers, informants, and ransom negotiators as terrorists to cut off the lifeblood of these groups.

2. The "Pulaku" Solution (Non-Kinetic Strategy)

Vice President Kashim Shettima has championed the "Pulaku" initiative (a Fulani term for "honor/manliness"wink. This acknowledges that poverty and a lack of opportunity are the primary recruiting tools for extremists.

Infrastructure & Jobs: Building schools, hospitals, and housing in the most affected northern regions to win "hearts and minds."

Resettlement: Moving Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) back to their ancestral lands with government protection to restore local economies.

3. Regional Cooperation (Lake Chad Basin)

As of early 2026, Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF).

Border Security: Collaborative patrols with Niger, Chad, and Cameroon are being intensified to prevent insurgents from fleeing across borders when pressured by the Nigerian military.

The "Babani" Leadership: Nigeria recently secured the appointment of Ambassador Ibrahim Babani as the Executive Secretary of the Lake Chad Basin Commission to spearhead regional stabilization.

4. Exploiting Insurgent Infighting

A major part of the current "solution" is actually a natural development the government is exploiting: the civil war between JAS (Boko Haram) and ISWAP.

Defection Programs: The government is expanding programs for "repentant" fighters. Thousands have surrendered because they are caught between the military and rival insurgent factions.

Intelligence Infiltration: Using defectors to gain deep intelligence on the remaining leadership structures of both factions.

5. Judicial Reform

The administration is reopening the trials of thousands of terrorism suspects who have been in detention for years. By fast-tracking these cases, the government aims to:

Show that there are legal consequences for insurgency.

Clear the backlog of innocent people who were caught in sweeps, which helps reduce local resentment toward the state.

The Challenges Ahead

Despite these efforts, significant hurdles remain:

Economic Strain: The cost of the ₦58.18 trillion 2026 budget is massive, and if the economy doesn't stabilize, the "non-kinetic" (poverty-fighting) side of the strategy may lack funding.

Adaptability: Insurgent groups are increasingly moving into banditry and kidnapping for ransom to fund themselves as their international ties weaken.

Transparency: There is ongoing pressure for the military to be more accountable for civilian safety during airstrikes and ground operations.

All the efforts listed only encourage terrorist and invite more people to be terrorists.

The only solution to terrorism in Nigeria is allowing the people bear arms and protect themselves as government has failed in its role to do this.

All the measures you listed above have yielded nothing but sorrows tears and pain.

You are sounding like Seyi Law all over again, all talk but little sense.

I'll give you an example, the same Yelwata that recorded over 200 deaths was recently attacked, Jos is still on fire, Northeast Bombings have resumed and even extended to Niger and Kwara States.

I think you are being insensitive to victims of violent crimes (abi you sef don dey collect 30k?)

The solution to terrorism in Nigeria is simple, crush them wherever they are with the might of the military, let communities bear adequate arms to defend themselves from attackers, nobody should be a sitting duck for another person.

That would be a disaster. Most Nigerians cannot pass psychiatric evaluation that would allow for gun ownership because, conducted properly, it requires very stringent proof a bearer of arms can be responsible with it.

Look at how bandits and terrorists, who were ordinary Nigerians, kill without mercy, once they were armed, to understand that point.

Jihad terror. Can easily be kept out of the South if the FG expedite the creation of Regional/State policing.

This is because any State and/or region that can create it's own police force to operate as intelligently and tactically efficient as some of the best in the world do will succeed defeating terrorist in Nigeria.

Terrorist in Nigeria are not particularly challenging if confronted by superior technology, forensic crime fighting and personnel trained/equipped to global best standard without sabotage from within.

All things State/regional police can achieve but the NPF cannot.

I have seen this with experience of Metropolitan Police (London police) over decades to know we are kidding in Nigeria with a police force literally 80 years behind some of the best in the world. Does Nigeria even have a DNA database?

I don't mention the North because the region is a different kettle of fish. Some of the plans of Government mentioned are good yet will fall short if there is no effort to tackle the Elephant in the room no one wants to talk about so as not to offend Moslems.

Religious and Cultural leadership in the North, taking in preaching clerics and Imams plus Sultans and Emirs etal, must be completely overhauled and regulated strictly , ensuring they move into modernity, to try and create a new cadre of Islamic preaching and engagement that does not radicalise minds murderously, about Jihad, from a young age.

Not repealing Sharia for example, that should never have been allowed in a nation formally secular, is one proof we are not ready to leave no stone unturned in the effort to defeat terror in Nigeria. I understand the President also.

There are things a Southern President cannot demand of the North and these are the critical things to ending terrorism the North itself has no interest in tackling. Meaning, whether it is a Northerner or Southerner in power, terrorism will never end unless Northerners want it to and genuinely commit to what must be done to achieve that..

Listen to the guy below and you'll understand efforts will fail if what the speaker identifies as a big problem is not tackled. I don't believe it will be tackled in so far as Northern leaders will be unwilling to accept responsibility to push for change that is required to end the proliferation of terror in the North.

Proof is how Northern political and religious leaders, with their region literally submerged by terrorism, are today only obsessed with power returning to the North.

Yet, at no time do we see them gathering seriously and formally to brainstorm solutions for terrorism that has virtually destroyed the North.

When has Atiku ever suggested solutions to terrorism considering he cleverly spends his time attacking Tinubu in desperation to regain power from the South? When has Atiku and other like himled from the to acknowledge the problem the man in the video below highlights?

FG should simply acknowledge that terrorism ends when Northerners truly wants it to and expedite the delivery of State/regional policing and greater regional autonomy so that the rest of his who want peace, security, growth and development can secure it.

When this happens and Northern leaders see other regions making progress in their safe and investment-friendly State, perhaps they will sit up and do the needful.

While we all continue pretending terrorism is a problem we must all tackle, whereas the Northerners responsible for it have other focus aside robustly fighting what they have foisted on Nigeria, then we will all fail.

We can all see the success of Amotekun to note the difference between a region sincere about defeating criminality and one that seems to tacitly assist it flourish and grow.

Not all Fulanis are bad or compromised. Ultimately, whoever is NSA is not the difference between winning or losing the war against Northern-led Banditry and Jihadist terror.

The central concept many Nigerians do not understand is that the war against terrorism and banditry cannot be won when the North's culture, orientation and belief system (religious ideology) leads many in the region, including those with the biggest influence and financial might, to be religiously, ideologically and culturally sympathetic toward the "agitation" of bandits and terrorists.

Gumi for example tell us bandits are fighting for justice and opportunities deprived them !! By murdering the rest of us in cold blood? I mean, what da eff?

This pervasive and all-consuming ideology, powerfully entrenched across the North and even above us into the Sahel nations, is what Nigeria must fight and expert would tell you it can't be fought and defeated until the North is ready to fight it.

Bottom line any intelligent and solution-driven person will accept is that the South cannot control what the North does or does not do. Absolutely crucial to understand this.

Meaning only existential option open to the rest of us is to perfect what we can control which is the security of our own lives and property in our states and region using our own independent State or regional police force.

Everything else is beating around the Bush and I don't expect what I say here to ever be a topic of discussion for our leaders at all levels because majority of them, even the good ones, are sworn to defending the goodness of the facade called "one Nigeria" that is actually the reason many terrible and unacceptable things are happening to Nigeria today.

Wake up!!!! It is already a disaster as far as entire local government areas in kwara , kogi, far north and all the areas who's indigenous group have been killed and dislocated from their ancestral homes in broad daylight and all those who have directly or indirectly being victims of kidnapping where ransom is paid to bank accounts operated by terrorist who half social media accounts yet all the government does is encouraged Nigerians to allow these criminals the opportunity to repent and be integrated to society.
You must be a terror sympathizer otherwise you would know the importance of being able to defend yourself and your family in the face of evil terror
