FG To Boost Cybersecurity With New Council As NDPC Probes Data Breach by AnonPoet(op): 5:19pm On Apr 06
The Federal Government is taking steps to strengthen Nigeria’s cybersecurity framework by proposing the creation of a Cybersecurity Coordination Council.

The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, said the council will bring together government agencies, private companies, and other stakeholders to enhance the nation’s ability to respond to cyber threats.

“Cybersecurity is a shared national responsibility,” Tijani said, stressing that protecting Nigeria’s digital economy requires partnerships, trust, and collective vigilance across government, industry, and civil society. He added that coordinated efforts will improve early threat detection, effective response, and the development of a resilient digital ecosystem.

He urged stakeholders to contribute to a sustainable, partnership-led cybersecurity model designed to deter cybercrime and protect citizens, businesses, and critical national infrastructure.

In a parallel move, the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has launched an investigation into a suspected data breach involving Remita Payment Services Limited, Sterling Bank, and other organisations.

Babatunde Bamigboye, Head of Legal, Enforcement and Regulations at NDPC, said notices of investigation were issued on April 1, 2026, and relevant parties are cooperating by providing information.

The NDPC is examining the type of personal data involved, the scope of the alleged breach, risks to affected individuals, and whether sufficient mitigation measures have been taken.

NDPC National Commissioner, Vincent Olatunji, also directed that all organisations using digital payment systems be reviewed to ensure compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023, and to safeguard the integrity of the country’s digital ecosystem.

This Bosun's case still amazes me.
He was one person I was almost certain will be a high performer in his office.

Someone who had excelled in the private sector, still can't understand how he eventually descended into a rice sharing politician with a rather lame record of achievements

Just say you want to empower a party member to do mass surveillance, don't hide under cybersecurity

Got a rumour that the leak was done by L33T of developed countries. North Korea, Iran or Russia are suspects in collaboration with Nigeria leeters.

Remember, it's not the first time remita has been hacked. If they don't put in more stringent security measures, it will happen again.

Remita is one of the top ten websites in Nigeria that is home-based.

Cybercrime tracking platform, Dark Web Informer, announced in an X post on 31 March that there was “a massive breach allegedly from Remita, a major Nigerian payment processing platform, that has been leaked on a popular cybercrime forum.”

According to the report, a total of “3TB of S3 storage, 800GB+ of KYC documents (IDs, passports, photos, bank statements, electricity bills), MySQL/Postgres databases, logs, docker registries, source codes, government encryption keys, GitKraken to S3 backups and sources codes, 35,000+ password hashes, and three databases”, were breached on the Remita platform.

Council again to tackle cybercrime?

Then they will allocate $1 billion for office space and $1 trillion for motor vehicles?

Then staff it from top to bottom with kolanut-chewing, yellowed-teeth, barely literate officers with their Benin Republic qualifications?

Bosun Tijani, if you had known, you wouldn't have taken this appointment.

You have now been outted as a vapid poseur.

That's what we tell people. Private sector performance sometimes might not result to high public sector performance. The circumstances are different.

But why is this the case?

Apart from bureaucratic bottle necks, which I presume a smart person can find theur way around and push forward new ideas.

I also know that inefficiency is the enabler of corruption, so may be the corrupt system will frustrate any effort to eliminate the inefficiency.

Why do you think that this is not a social media control tool disguised in balablu town hall rhetoric?

How is Nigeria comparable to the USA on basic government services and utilities before you start comparing us with them on cybersecurity?

How many American cities lack pipe borne water? Is America also leading the world in extreme poverty paupers and children out of school huh

Why has city boy’s private sector experience failed to translate into excellence in governance for the past 27 years in Lagos State, and for the past three years at the federal level huh

The Chicago private sector experience documented by Reno?

Well reflected in Lagos and Nigeria through higher taxes, subsidy savings and huge debt burden that is not matched by improved government services and utilities from well paid civil servants?

Or well reflected in balablu propaganda lies of phantom achievements huh

Lets be honest here
And im not a spokesperson or apologist.
Im very happy you said when he was in private sector. My brother if government and her civil servants redtape you or plan you
my guy you will just jejely slow it down or they shut you up.
Its so like so, even in the sane foreign countries
Talk less of n9a with all our wickedly vested interests which dont usually favour we the people.
Ive seen firsthand some of the great work NITDA and FMCIDE are doing in the background, i will say this . They are not sleepingon the job , please lets appreciate effort. Its hard to change a state of stagnation after decades of inertia

It doesn't work like that
3mtt is an online training center sponsored by FGN
What 3mtt does is that after training and certification in specialised digital skills they make you visible to government and/or private sector organisations that are in need of certified experts in those fields of interest
Hope that was useful
