China and Russia just vetoed a UN Security Council resolution today aimed at protecting commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

The strait (key for ~20% of global oil) has been closed by Iran amid the 5-week US-Israel war with Iran. Bahrain (with Gulf allies) drafted the measure to urge "defensive coordination" for safe passage—but it was heavily watered down after China/Russia opposed any force authorization.

Vote: 11 in favor, 2 against (China/Russia), 2 abstentions. It needed no vetoes to pass.

The veto blocks UN backing for reopening efforts, leaving the crisis unresolved as Trump's deadline looms.
