You are absolutely right. But though it was a food for the affluent, growing up in the 90s in the north, apart from being food for the affluent it was seen a a meal for special occasions. Birthdays and festivities. During Christmas or Muslim festivities, it was usually rice galore with soft drinks. So we usually looked forward to festivities year to year. The intervals in timing back then was what made it special. However today it has become so common. Rice is eaten everyday in some families and soft drinks are consumed on a daily basis.

Growing up in the 80's ND 90's it was almost a sin for your mother not to serve the family the special and week long awaited delicacies of a Sunday rice.. it got so customary that your child will cry if you dnt follow up with this tradition.

It was so addictive that it got even Christmas involved that Christmas must b a rice eating holiday... Now, with the advent of new ideology led mother's ND facing very harsh economy, I want to know from our various new families, do wives keep to this long standing tradition?

So how did most homes now develop the culture of Sunday rice??

The thing was our mothers believed in stockpiling our stomachs much not rice that would quickly digest in their opinion

We were even staying in a one room before we moved to a room and parlor

There are people in the 80s who only ate rice twice of thrice in the year. Do you think it was easy buying buying rice and Titus fish in the 80s? I'm not sure you are up to 40 years of age. I'm talking about the era of Uncle Ben's rice. Chicken was never a luxury because we always have local chickens.

That Sunday rice and stew was a special one. Some family even use chicken every Sunday. Others use fish and beef

Or I would say my dad sacrificed a lot to give us the good life as kids
But he kept saying I’m giving you people the life of rich kids.
The amusement park things in lagos , the Mr bigs treats
The weekend local matches in onikan stadium
The bar beach things etc
Few I can remember
But I would say we were on the button of the middle class.
The bread and tea in the morning before school , oats and milk , custard etc for breakfast
We only get the live chickens on festive season
It basically fish , meat, egg and pork.

Let me say you were/are lucky. Not everybody enjoyed such luxury. Even till now, rice is still a luxury to some people in Nigeria. People still sell their votes in this 21st century because of few rubbers of rice 🤥

The reason is because rice was a luxury in those days. Especially Uncle Ben's rice. Some people in the village couldn't eat rice more than twice or trice in a year (Christmas and Easter periods). There were families who could only afford to cook rice once in a week which is mostly on Sundays. But things have changed today. People can eat rice everyday or anytime they like because it is no more a luxury to them.

Yet people will tell you the economy is worse today than in those days when rice was too expensive for the masses.

Even meat back then was 1 or 2 small pieces a plate.

Nothing like all this "assorted meats" wey go full plate, unless you were among the super rich.

My mom at 87 years old still keep that tradition.
Anytime she wake up on Sunday morning before service by 6am she has boiled her rice.
Omo at my age I still love eating her rice because it's spicy with alot of pepper.
I'm missing her dish since I left home life never remain thesame.

We ate rice most mornings on weekdays growing up that rice on Sunday afternoon wouldn't matter to us except that sometimes, it comes with chicken as against the regular beef.
