Re: Alaafin Pays Courtesy Visit On President Tinubu At His Boudillon House by uunwanaobong3: 9:54pm On Apr 08
A queen (royalty) kneeling down to greet president (subject) is not wise. I am feeling ashamed of entire Yoruba culture already.

A king does not go to his subject house to pay a courtesy visit, instead his subject comes to him in his royal palace.

I am saying this because president Tinubu is from Yoruba, therefore he is a subject of alafin

As President, Tinubu is above all kings in every part of Nigeria. So he is an exemption.

For Yorubas who are not in such position, you are a subject of any coronated king you come in contact with regardless of your hometown and you are expected to respect that position. That is Yoruba tradition.
I disagree. Respecting someone is different from being their subjects. Yoruba is an ethnic group comprising multiple tribe.

If it was back in the days of the Oyo empire, then I’ll agree with you that by right of conquest, most Yoruba are subject to the Alaafin.

But after the Kiriji war and after tribe got their independence, an egba man is not a subject to the Alaafin neither is a Lagos person a subject. They can respect the king of other territory just as every Yoruba is expected to respect their elders BUT not a subject.

I addressed that with the words "the kings that you come in contact with".

There is general respect for elders in Yorubaland but that is different from how you relate with a king.

The previous Alaafin grew up at the palace of Alake of Egbaland. He was his subject. An Ibadan man in the presence of Ooni or Awujale is like any other subject despite the fact that Ibadan was never under any of those.

Civilization brought all these misrepresentations. Our ancestors never lived that way, a Yoruba king is a Yoruba king regardless of domain or hierarchy. Yorubas do not question that.

Bro Yoruba king have their own domain even in the past and a Yoruba from another kingdom entirely are not subjects to those kings unless by conquest or as tributaries.

Even in Yoruba movies, you can clearly see that kings have area where their own kingdom end and you have “eyi odi” as borderline.

Respect is different from subject. You’re mixing the two

They are not subjects but where else would you meet a King if not in his palace in his capital? It is not like today that kings travel abroad on holidays or for medicals. It will still be expected for you to greet a King in the normal way even if you are not one of the subjects though even among the subjects some people don't publicly pay obeisance to the king traditionally.

I agree with you totally. It is expected to bow to a king even if they are from another kingdom entirely.

What I am arguing with the person is the word he used “Subject”.

Yes the Yoruba are made up different nations that have the same origin, world view, culture, language, spirituality and etc and the most powerful among them in recent history is the Oyo and they also have the highest population. Most existing Yoruba nations have paid tribute to the Oyo at one point or the other in their history though Oyo rose to prominence not quite long ago. Ife is regarded as the spiritual capital and representation of the first human civilization or city. No Yoruba nation that I know of ever paid tribute to the current Ife but they all felt duty bound in the past to protect the city as their origin. Obviously in the ancient past, extinct Yoruba states would have been tributary to some Ife that existed back then
