INEC Denies Copying Press Statement From Presidential Aide by Ofunaofu(op): 4:32pm On Apr 12
The Independent National Electoral Commission has denied allegations that it copied a recent press statement from Dada Olusegun, a Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on New Media.

The commission described reports suggesting otherwise as “fake, misleading, and a misrepresentation of facts.”

The controversy followed INEC’s reposting of a press statement originally issued to debunk claims that its Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, had endorsed a partisan post on X or maintained a personal account on the platform.

The statement, signed by the Chairman’s Chief Press Secretary, Adedayo Oketola, on April 10, 2026, described the allegations as “entirely baseless” and a “fabrication,” while warning of cybercriminals using fake accounts in the Chairman’s name.

However, on Sunday, Peoples Gazette reported that Olusegun had posted a similar or identical statement hours before INEC’s publication.

In the report titled “Nigerians react as INEC reposts Tinubu aide’s message,” the publication cited public reactions accusing the electoral body of copying content and raising questions about its independence.

Some social media users claimed the wording was verbatim and suggested coordination with the Presidency.

“An X user, #Mrfestusogun, said, ‘Dada Olusegun posted an INEC press statement 23 hours before INEC even posted it.’”

“Another user, #adeyanjudeji, wrote that ‘the president’s SA on media is the one helping the INEC chairman to debunk allegations of partisanship,’” the report stated.

In a statement posted on its official X handle on Sunday, INEC clarified that it did not copy the statement from any third party.

“Any circulation of the statement outside the Commission’s official channels was done independently and not coordinated by INEC.”

“The publication by Peoples Gazette is fake, misleading, and a misrepresentation of facts.”

“INEC’s repost of the statement was solely to amplify accurate information earlier released from the Commission and should not be misconstrued as alignment with any individual or political office holder,” the rebuttal read.

INEC reaffirmed its strict non-partisan stance, saying:

“The Commission remains strictly non-partisan and urges the public to disregard misleading interpretations of its actions.”

It advised Nigerians to rely solely on INEC’s verified official channels for accurate information.

The development comes amid heightened scrutiny of INEC’s leadership and preparations for future elections, including the 2027 general elections.

Recent INEC activities include the derecognition of ADC leadership, which sparked criticism from opposition parties and calls for the resignation of Amupitan.

The opposition and their supporters are not even aware that they have already wasted 3 years chasing others shadow which eventually na starting una get , una no get finishing.

Make una be serious for once now

How would the x account , copying message or not affect the credibility of the 2027 election?

You people are not even worried about how INEC will be selecting their state RO, the company to print the ballot papers, are they affiliated to the people in government, the logistics contract award to people , company, what's their relationship with the people in power?

If the opposition leaders and their supporters are not taking themselves seriously, why should Nigerians bother to listen to whatever you want to say as campaign?

Amupitan showed his head too early how do you derecognise the most popular group of the major opposition party in the coming elections just few days to their mandatory constitutional convention for one unpopular individual thereby paving way for a one party participation of the election.
He shot himself in the leg and nobody is going to consider him as having integrity.
Re: INEC Denies Copying Press Statement From Presidential Aide by Validated: 3:25am On Apr 13
Amupitan should just resign to save whatever is left of INEC integrity.
Firstly as an APC member his independence is vitiated. Worse, he fraudulently attempted to hoodwink Nigerians 🇳🇬 . Someone of such level of "unscrupulous" character has no business being the lead for an institution like INEC.

These whole thing has only made the opposition more determined and I must say quite emboldened in making sure that the ruling party is given a run for its money.

The body language from the onset only points at an INEC that is determined in making sure that only the APC remains in power by its posture of partisanship. If only this Amupitan Joash, SAN knows what's good for him, it's advisable he throws in the towel by resigning based on the evidence linking both his email and his main mobile number to the said X handle. If only he had owned up to its ownership, he wouldn't have been exposed this much. But it is what it his. This man in my own view is a shameless liar that isn't fit to hold a public office of trust especially, that of an electoral umpire like INEC. Same number was also used for his OPAY registration and activation and some people having forwarding tokens as little as ₦10 just to verify it's his account.

Under the APC anything goes examples are so much like the Nigerian Ambassador designate to France, Ayodele Oke in whose residence monies in different foreign currencies were found at an Ikoyi residence fully paid for by him and his wife. It was believed he fled the country to avoid the full wrath of the law and was believed to be a fugitive until he was brought back by Tinubu for a bigger role in France. What does that tell us? Our President and his government have a wonderful relationships with people of questionable characters.

So if people with integrity are talking, this one too (INEC) go open mouth wan follow talk, abeg shut your track.

You were caught pants down with partisanship online activities, you came out trying to deny to undeniable.

You're caught again in broad daylight rebroadcasting unoriginal content in your defense. Yet again you'll display again the typical APC behavior of lying about the obvious and believing you can lobby everybody to accept your white lie as truth.

You're dragging down the pedigree of a national institution as big as INEC.

Only people with absolutely no shame and integrity can in the capacity of an INEC Chairman do half of what this clown has done

Well, the presidential aide just claimed his post and that of INEC are a mere coincidence.

Re: INEC Denies Copying Press Statement From Presidential Aide by Gadafii: 6:50am On Apr 13
But my question is how is the the function of dayo the president's aide to speak on behalf of inec, an independent commission for that matter.

If the president's aide who is obviously an APC member can defend the inec, that means the inec will in turn defend APC in 2027

Mr Amputee must be removed, he's not fit to conduct a credible election, e has corns in his pockets

Seriously he messed up fighting in many front, not in good stand with different groups. PBAT needs to immediately replace him and have time to shop for someone else otherwise he will be forced to resign close to election leaving the ruling party no option than to replace with someone unprepared which is good for democracy (he will be push to conduct free and fair) and bad for APC because no time to perfect their rigging.
