The United Kingdom (UK) Metropolitan Police say their records identify the Nigerian man recently extradited to the country over murder allegations as “Matthew Chukuemeka Adebiyi.”

In an email response sent to TheCable on Friday evening, the UK police confirmed that the suspect’s name is “Chukuemeka”, corroborating the earlier statement published by the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

“Hello, Our records show it as Matthew Chukuemeka ADEBIYI. Thanks,” UK Metropolitan police wrote in the mail to TheCable.

On Thursday, many Nigerians on X accused the NPF of “ethnic bigotry” after it released a statement that included “Chukuemeka” in the suspect’s name.

In the statement, the NPF identified the suspect as “Matthew Chukwuemeka Adebiyi”.

Many of those who commented on the police statement alleged that the police included the name to identify the suspect as someone from the south-east geopolitical zone.

The NPF had on Thursday announced that Adebiyi has been extradited to the UK to face charges on alleged murder and drug trafficking.

Anthony Placid, the force spokesperson, said Adebiyi was arrested on January 23, 2025, by operatives of the INTERPOL’s national central bureau (NCB) in Abuja.

Placid said the UK authorities requested the extradition of the suspect in September 2024 over his “alleged involvement in the murder of one Joshua Boadu on 18th June 2018”.

The force spokesperson said Adebiyi fled to Nigeria to evade arrest after the alleged involvement in the murder.

In November 2025, a federal high court in Lagos ordered his extradition to the UK to face trial over allegations.

Questions have been raised about the travel document used in the extradition of Matthew Chukwuemeka Adebiyi.

I want to clarify the facts to ensure accuracy.

The document in question is a valid Emergency British Passport. This standard temporary travel document, valid for up to six months, is issued worldwide to support lawful extradition when a regular passport is not available.

This practice is neither unusual nor suspicious. It is recognized internationally.

Labeling an official document used in a court-sanctioned, INTERPOL-facilitated extradition as "doctored" is not only inaccurate but also undermines the integrity of a legitimate legal process.

The Federal High Court of Lagos granted the extradition order. Nigerian authorities executed a surrender warrant. UK law enforcement received the suspect at Murtala Mohammed International Airport.

The leadership of the Force welcomes questions, but will not tolerate misinformation.

He is not a Nigerian but British citizen!

Why accord him with every right WITHOUT exceptions and still call him a Nigerian?

If he had a break through on teleportation, would you call him a Nigerian?

I will be filing a lawsuit against the British government for defamation of National image!

What an insult!

"ADEBIYI" is his surname, that means his Yoruba father probably married an Igbo lady or decided to name him "Chukwuemeka" an Igbo name for reasons best known to his Yoruba father alone undecided

Some fools were on Twitter fighting hard because of chukwuemeka in the name...they believe something doesn't add up with the name combination...to them, maybe NPF cook some name to just extradite the guy

It’s possible his middle name was adopted because I haven’t seen an Igbo man misspell Chukwuemeka as Chukuemeka to the point of having it on their international passport.

so, which is it ? Adebiyi or Chukwu ? will I also say that both parents have failed on his upbringing. I also blame the British government for denying their own when it comes to crime, but will rush to claim someone when they are doing well for them.

Adebiyi is his surname. He's probably from Tinubu's village.

I wonder why some people are tearing themselves apart because of mere name.

He is from my partner's community in Ogun State. Both his father and mother are also from Ogun State. His parents added chukwuemeka as part of his name because of the love they have for Chukwuemeka Ojukwu in particular and Igbo people in general.
