T9ksy:
[iIronsi did promote three northerm officers but it was an afterthought.

Initially, Ironsi had promoted a whopping 18 igbo officers ONLY! He only promoted these northerners to mask his inherent bigotry. It's akin to how Ademoyega was the last officer recruited by the igbo coupists to whitewash the nefarous plot and give it nationalistic/revolutionay outlook.

Moreover, the 3 northern officers were promoted over and above their yoruba peers. Ironsi couldn't find any yoruba officer worthy of promotion but he found 18 igbos! [/i]
This is nonsense, historians suggest that ironsi was trying to balance the factions within the military with those promotions, it has nothing to do with bigotry.
And indeed the coup had a nationalistic aim as it ultimately planned to free and enthrone Awolowo who was a Yoruba man. Furthermore, the plotters were not just igbo men and one Yoruba, that's distortion of history. The coup plotters involved people like:
Captain Ganiyu Adeleke (Yoruba)

Captain Gibson Jalo (Bali/Chamba)

Captain S. Swanton (Middle Belt)

Lieutenant Fola Oyewole (Yoruba)

Lieutenant John Atom Kpera (Tiv)

Lieutenant O. Olafemiyan (Yoruba)

Lieutenant Hope Harris Eghagha (Urhobo)

Second Lieutenant Saleh Dambo (Hausa)

Lieutenant Dag Warribor (Ijaw)

Lieutenant R. Egbiko (Esean)

Lieutenant Tijani Katsina (Hausa/Fulani) .

Do tell me what's tribalist about this names

Do not mind them OK bcosbthatbis why almost all the Northerngovernors are in APC so they can work against Tinubu.

Can you go to bed now.

esnbrutality:
See them..

They have started the exact tactic and playbook they employed during buhari and the last elections.

Propaganda to pitch the North against the SE, forgetting that Tinubu jailed El Rufai after betraying him. Tinubu also locked children that protested.

Even after jailing Nnamdi Kanu to gain Northern sympathy. The same NORTH dont regard the gesture. The North is even asking for Sunday igboho to be arrested, but as betrayals Tinubu pretends not to hear that.

The fear is SOLIDLY obvious.

Atiku/obi ticket..and Tinubu is Toast.

Like the oba that threatened non-Yorubas for exercising their democratic rights?

Or the likes of those that called a Lagos citizen unfit because his mom is not from Lagos state?

Or the Yorubas obas and leaders that based on tribal affiliation insulted and attacked a sitting president and now that things are actually worse, decided to keep mute because of tribal politics?
Democratic rights in Yoruba land. Why don't you go back to your region and exercise it there?

Ironsi moved the coup potters from Lagos to Owerri, kept paying their salaries while they were in detention and as an insult to other Nigerians, he promoted some of them while they were in detention.

His tribalistic nature was his undoing.

Why don't you change the constitution to reflect your wish? grin

GeneralOuki:
What has this got to do with Obi?
They always stoke ethnic tensions close to elections to promote their candidate. They have no other strategy. Tinubu's betrayal of the North and treatment of Elrufai and co is hardly different from what Op is trying to propagate. Ironsi, Balewa, Awolowo, and co were once contemporary leaders in their time, representing the interest of their people.

It was his officers murdered in January that he failed to save that didn't deserve what they got.

Do you know Brigadier Ademulegun's Guards were secretly withdrawn and changed in the middle of the night Ademulegun and his wife were murdered?
That was why there was no resistance to the coup plotters entering Ademulegun's compound.
Only Gen Ironsi as head of the Army had the Authority to do that.

Any other story is misinformation Propaganda

These people would rather work with or serve under Fulani than free Awolowo or work with Yoruba, not to mention installing Awo as the "Best President Nigeria Never Had - Ojukwu"

Awo was promised that he would be freed from Prison if he formed some alliance with NPN, he refused.

He wrote Ironsi to grant him Release twice. He and Ojukwu refused.

As soon as Gowon released Awo, the same Ojukwu claimed credit!

And which factions in the military was Ironsi trying to placate by promoting ONLY 18 igbo military officers?

Fola Oyewole was not a coup plotter. He got wind of the coup on the 14th of Jan. 1966 at 11:40pm, barely 3hrs before the commencement of the said coup. Read "The reluctant rebel" by Fola Oyewole and "Why we stuck" by Maj. Ademoyega.

Omo, una go explain tire...........

It was Balewa in the first republic that offered to release Awo if he will agree to join the government. NPN was in the second republic
