Following the symbolic flag off of the monthly environmental sanitation exercise along the Mushin Agege Motor Road corridor on Saturday, March 14th, 2026, I wish to provide further clarity on the modalities of the programme as we prepare for the first exercise on Saturday, April 25th, 2026.

The exercise will hold every last Saturday of the month between the hours of 6:30 am and 8:30 am. During this period, there will be controlled movement across the state to allow residents carry out thorough cleaning of their homes, surroundings and drainage frontages.

Our enforcement officers from the ministry, LASEPA, KAI, LAWMA, and local government sanitation inspectors will conduct physical inspections during and after the sanitation window to ensure compliance. Defaulters will be sanctioned in accordance with the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017.

LAWMA intervention trucks will go around to cart away bagged wastes generated during the exercise. I also wish to announce that there will be rewards for the cleanest Local Government Area, Local Council Development Area, and the cleanest street as part of efforts to encourage healthy competition and community participation.

We urge all residents to take ownership of this exercise and join hands with the government in building a cleaner, safer and more sustainable Lagos.

This 21st century . I expect the State to have an effective system that cleans up the roads and carts away refuse without having to shut down movement for 2 hours every last Saturday of the month

Employ enough workers on minimum wage rates to sweep the roads and clear drainages all across Lagos on a daily and continuous basis. This will be more effective and that’s what the government should do. And Lagos State government has enough resources to do this

Lagos is a very busy state . Just 2hours cleaning and some people are complaining

Who are the people that are exempted from movement restrictions

They have run out of ideas . No new innovation.. bringing back ancient ideas in 2026.. when you make old people your leaders,they will give you primitive results..

Lagos is a city of over 15 million now when you stop this number of people from work for 2 hours you have lost over 30 million productive hours and the money lost.we must factor these things and know there are more efficient and better ways things can be done. Techmology is there !

Lagos is a city that doesn't have street sweepers trucks ! When cities like Enugu and Aba are having it...they still have their human sweepers constituting nuisance to traffic and endangering there live!

Build drains and maintain them

This doesn’t mean copying everything blindly, but it does mean taking waste control, public behavior, and environmental laws far more seriously than they are now. Without that shift, no amount of infrastructure will be enough. If Lagos wants to compete with the world’s leading cities, it has to embrace the idea that a clean and environmentally responsible city is not a luxury—it is the foundation for economic growth, public health, and quality of life.


They don't even have ordinary trash bins in public by government. Go to cities like Owerri! The government have trash bins and dump in every two streets which they evacuated every week and the city is neat ! It's so neat that they don't even have Okada and Keke in Owerri city and you don't even urinate in public unlike Lagos that they defecate and urinate in public

They should start from doing the right thing

Very clueless bunch of people who missed they way and found themselves in govt house.
They are sand-filling the lagoon to build estates for themselves thereby causing flooding everywhere but they want to blame the poor masses for it.

It is true Lagos is not all that clean when compared to Abuja, Uyo and Jos but can you compare the population of these Nigerian cities to that of Lagos?

We can all do more though than just complaining about anything and everything....

I was planing to spend this night at my girlfriends place, but I will shift it so I dont wake up tomorrow to join their tenants in cleaning thier gutters. I will clean mine instead. Eko oni baje!

This is good. At least flooding in some areas will be reduced.

The govt should also ensure that there are enough waste trucks to immediately dispose the refuse gathered. Not allowing it to linger for days.

My dear it has nothing to do with population, Lagos isn't more populated than New York, Tokyo, Osaka, Beijing, Guangzhou in China even Singapore

The issue with Lagos is ineptitude and lack of creativity! Lagos that the streets are not even tarred, Lagos that people still defecate in the public ..Lagos and Ibadan has the highest of that

I agree with you, Lagos is not the most populated city in the world and truth be told, it is not very clean either but this Monthly Sanitation Excercise is one of the ways to get started and I think we should all support it and play our part.

We have been told to clean our surroundings and that Refuse Dump Trucks will be on hand to evacuate immediately. Let us all monitor this and be on Tokunboh Wahab case to deliver on this.

Wrong move...Sanwo took us back to days of man hours loss. Now lagosians will only clean their environment once in a week
