This 21st century . I expect the State to have an effective system that cleans up the roads and carts away refuse without having to shut down movement for 2 hours every last Saturday of the month Employ enough workers on minimum wage rates to sweep the roads and clear drainages all across Lagos on a daily and continuous basis. This will be more effective and that’s what the government should do. And Lagos State government has enough resources to do this |

Very ridiculous.mwhy do we do things backwards , you don't get to see cities like Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha, Sydney etc dedicated every last Saturday of the month for environmental shits like this, I don't know why Africans don't think Lagos is a city of over 15 million now when you stop this number of people from work for 2 hours you have lost over 30 million productive hours and the money lost.we must factor these things and know there are more efficient and better ways things can be done. Techmology is there ! Lagos is a city that doesn't have street sweepers trucks ! When cities like Enugu and Aba are having it...they still have their human sweepers constituting nuisance to traffic and endangering there live! Lagos should be creative in their environmental stuff...everywhere stinks and dirty! They should go and copy neat cities like Enugu, Uyo, Owerri, Abuja and Jos Buy street sweepers ... Those human sweepers becoming nuisance and endangering their lives Build drains and maintain them Finally educate people on how to be neat Lagos can afford these ...if other cities in East can ,Lagos is rich they can also

These guys are funny Klington:Cities that stay clean and environmentally advanced don’t get there by chance—they build systems that make cleanliness normal and expected. Places like Singapore and Tokyo show that strict waste management, reliable public transport, and strong environmental laws can drastically reduce pollution and disorder. At the same time, cities such as Copenhagen and Amsterdam prove that investing in green spaces, clean energy, and smart technology makes urban life healthier and more sustainable. But what really makes these systems work is the mindset of the people—cleanliness is treated as a shared responsibility, not just a government duty. In my view, Lagos cannot afford to treat this as optional anymore. The city’s growth and global relevance depend on adopting the same disciplined approach seen in modern cities. This doesn’t mean copying everything blindly, but it does mean taking waste control, public behavior, and environmental laws far more seriously than they are now. Without that shift, no amount of infrastructure will be enough. If Lagos wants to compete with the world’s leading cities, it has to embrace the idea that a clean and environmentally responsible city is not a luxury—it is the foundation for economic growth, public health, and quality of life. They don't even have ordinary trash bins in public by government. Go to cities like Owerri! The government have trash bins and dump in every two streets which they evacuated every week and the city is neat ! It's so neat that they don't even have Okada and Keke in Owerri city and you don't even urinate in public unlike Lagos that they defecate and urinate in public They should start from doing the right thing |

Very clueless bunch of people who missed they way and found themselves in govt house. They are sand-filling the lagoon to build estates for themselves thereby causing flooding everywhere but they want to blame the poor masses for it. |

ariesbull:Add all the inhabitants of those cities together then check out the population of Lagos. Two hours on the last Saturday of every month is not too much of a ask to clean up Sir. It is true Lagos is not all that clean when compared to Abuja, Uyo and Jos but can you compare the population of these Nigerian cities to that of Lagos? We can all do more though than just complaining about anything and everything.... |

mikeapollo:Chief, this is not about flooding but mountain of refuse, blocked drainage. Two hours on the last Saturday of every month to clean is not too much of a ask.... |

This is good. At least flooding in some areas will be reduced. The govt should also ensure that there are enough waste trucks to immediately dispose the refuse gathered. Not allowing it to linger for days. |

My dear it has nothing to do with population, Lagos isn't more populated than New York, Tokyo, Osaka, Beijing, Guangzhou in China even Singapore The issue with Lagos is ineptitude and lack of creativity! Lagos that the streets are not even tarred, Lagos that people still defecate in the public ..Lagos and Ibadan has the highest of that Lagos that don't even have public trash bin or dump oga it's about management not population Lukuluku69: |

at last , this town smells like refuse dump. all drainages are blocked and refuse dumed in drainages drainages not flowing , water from the drainage to the road overflowing people urinating anywhere, shitting inside drainage, lagos state is very very dirty and its smelling. tommorow every street and neigbhoorhood should come out and clean their enviroment , they should not take tomorrow as a curfew and everyone indoors and sleep and rest while the aim is defeated |

They always find a fine way to do things and also .....I hope this is in Constitution cos anyone that goes his business on that time you can't stop him cos doing so is going against FREEDOM OF MOVEMENT which is enshrined in Constitution unless they have to put this their so called CONTROLLED MOVEMENT 8n Constitution or get ready for the people that will head to court Let's do things properly! How many decent cities do this thing yet they are neat JuanDeDios: |

We can copy cities of the world and change the mentality of people Cities that keep their drainage systems clear don’t wait for emergencies—they treat it as routine maintenance. In places like Tokyo and Singapore, drains are inspected and cleaned on a schedule, while technology like sensors helps detect blockages early. European cities such as Amsterdam use vacuum trucks and high-pressure jets to remove sludge and waste efficiently, and cities like Copenhagen focus heavily on prevention through good design and strict environmental rules. Across Africa, some cities are also taking this seriously. Kigali is often cited for its strong environmental policies and strict enforcement against littering and dumping in drains. Cape Town maintains stormwater systems with scheduled clearing and uses both manual teams and machinery to keep waterways functional. In Nairobi, there have been increasing efforts by city authorities to clear drainage channels and improve waste management, especially in flood-prone areas. What stands out in all these cities is that drain clearing is not treated as a one-time fix but as part of a broader environmental system that includes public awareness, enforcement, and proper waste disposal. For Lagos, the lesson is clear: consistent maintenance, better equipment, and stronger environmental discipline can significantly reduce flooding and improve overall cleanliness. |

ariesbull:I agree with you, Lagos is not the most populated city in the world and truth be told, it is not very clean either but this Monthly Sanitation Excercise is one of the ways to get started and I think we should all support it and play our part. We have been told to clean our surroundings and that Refuse Dump Trucks will be on hand to evacuate immediately. Let us all monitor this and be on Tokunboh Wahab case to deliver on this. |
